Caption the Photo – January 29, 2014

January 29, 2014 By Jodi

Some of my favorite posts are when I put a picture up and ask you to caption it.  I already have a caption in my head which I will share on Friday.

For a little background, today’s picture was taken last week on the deck at our house, right after a fresh covering of snow.

Shit My Dog Eats

January 28, 2014 By Jodi

Let’s face it.  Being a lab owner requires patience, diligence and above all a sense of humor.  If you didn’t laugh at the crazy shit they do you’d be pulling your hair out.

You know, if you have a lab they’re highly motivated by food.   The first time I took out the clicker and paired it with a green bean, Delilah about lost her mind.  She was so fixated on the green bean, she couldn’t see anything else.  Thankfully we’ve come a long way since that initial pairing, but anyone that knows Delilah knows if she had her druthers she’d eat until she exploded.  Which leaves us with an interesting question.

How do you know your dog has  a problem with food?

You sit down to make a list of all the shit she’s eaten and you’re like…..I can’t even remember.

1-14-14

Really?  You’re going there?  After that plate of Nachos you inhaled last night?  Whatever Mama. Remember payback is a bitch and so is Karma and I know there’s a Human Shaming blog hop somewhere in your future.

So here for your reading pleasure….

The crazy shit my dog has eaten:

  • Packing peanuts
  • plastic tooth picks
  • used tissues
  • make-up remover cloths
  • acorns
  • wood bark
  • packing peanuts
  • Jojoba oil
  • Bisquick
  • a container full of vitamins and supplements
  • baker’s chocolate
  • 3/4 pound of butter including wrappers
  • what was left of a bag of potato chips
  • a plate of shaved corned beef
  • pancake batter from the bowl
  • a hot dog out of a pan
  • cooking oil from out of a pan
  • coffee with Bailey’s and cream
  • dog poop

Shit she’s tried to eat but been caught or deterred from eating:

  • 7 pounds of frozen chicken necks
  • a can of crisco
  • chicken from the pan
  • a dog treat from Sampson’s mouth
  • a rack of deer ribs
  • a sandwich baggie full of ham
  • an M&M chocolate bar

Of course, there’s always the stuff you THINK she might have eaten.  Like the time I called Hubby at work, practically hysterical because I thought she ate a metal fork.

I found it in the bedroom, she’d licked it good and clean too.

And then there was the time last week when she got up at 2:30 in the morning to dig at the carpet in the den.

food motivated

She wouldn’t be deterred and kept returning to the same spot.  When Hubby came home I mentioned it to him and he said he’d dropped the chip bag the night before.    Her lab nose knew that there was a corner of a chip wedged under the heater.

Of course we gave it to her. I mean, she earned it after all.

Can you think of anything I’ve forgotten?  Do you have a Devouring Delilah? How do you manage a food obsessed dog?

Many thanks to Jodi Chick from Kol’s Notes for the awesome blog idea and intro.

Mixed-Up Monday – January 27, 2014

January 27, 2014 By Jodi

This was supposed to be my Follow-Up Friday post, but I got lazy and took the day off and so here is my follow-up from last week.

You Make Me Smile – January 19, 2014

Animal Couriers said, “Our greeting is two dog heads alternately popping through the cat flap door and our boy George trying to stick his biggest toy through the opening. Never fails to make us laugh.”

I’m pretty sure that would make me laugh too.

Frankie and Ernie said, “We Scream at them saying we are HAPPY to see you.”

LOL Frankie and Ernie, you guys crack me up.

The Words No Pet Parent Wants to Hear

The comments left on this post totally reinforced my belief that the village of Blogville, is the absolute best.  Your love and support make everything so much easier.  And I forgot to mention JoAnn from Sand Spring Chesapeakes, she was one of my other vet tech friends who got tagged in those videos.

Jana Rade left a link which is probably the easiest explanation I’ve seen about Degenerative Myleopathy.

Sugar said, “Just an advise from mom, don’t “google” so much.”

Googling is the absolute worst thing to do, yet it’s always the first thing I do.  Your mom is right Sugar, we just need to stop.

Genevieve said, “Why did they do this to you? Why did you do this to us!??”

I’m sorry I did that to you!  I really tried in at the end to leave you a clue that all was not lost.  If I thought anybody would have read a post that was over 1500 words long, I would have kept going!

The Blessing of an Ear Infection

Pouty

You say it’s for my own good, but I don’t see any good in it.

Jana Rade asked, “Did you consider doing the conservative management with a brace support?”

We have an appointment with the Holistic Vet on Thursday and I will discuss with him as well as with my own Vet, I’ve heard mixed reviews as to whether the brace is more of a hinderance or a help, so I’ll keep my options open.  Rest assured any decision we make will have much agonizing on my part.

Houndstooth said, “It’s funny how a matter of perspective can make a diagnosis seem so much better! Normally, getting a diagnosis about a torn ACL is pretty tough, but after hearing your dog has DM first, it sounds pretty darned great!”

I totally agree!

Kirsten asked, “Can he do some crossword puzzles to tire his brain out?”

Oh how I wish he could!  We did play a little scent game one night and I know I need to do more to help tire his brain out.

Lexy said, “Though wouldn’t it be nice to be able to explain to a dog that this sudden onset of lame/slow/short walks is to help him heal?”

From your lips.   It would still be tough on him, but at least if he understood the end goal was that he would be able to run freely again, perhaps his restrictions wouldn’t be so hard.

Five Pills in One Gulp

Dawn asked, “Would something like the Kinn Kudose work for his pills?”

That’s a pretty cool product Dawn!  I had never heard of it, and I bet it would be amazing for some dogs, but for me the Ricotta is working so I’m sticking with it. 😉

Carol Bryant asked, “Are you coming to BlogPaws in May?”

Right now it doesn’t look that way Carol, Vegas is a lot more expensive for me then D.C.

Thursday Barks and Bytes – Coyote Ugly

Genevieve asked, “Could it have been a little rock salt that made Sampson limp?”

It absolutely could have been rock salt, it could have been the chemicals they put on the road, it could have been a piece of ice, it could have been the cold.  I’m not sure, all I know was I wasn’t willing to take the risk that it could be something more.

Thank you all so much for joining Thursday Barks and Bytes Blog Hop, you guys are awesome and made the inaugural hop such an amazing success!  You are the best!!  Come back Thursday to see who is the lucky winner of the Amazon Gift Card!
