A Difference Of Opinion…Day Three Hundred

September 26, 2011 By Jodi

Hubby and I are having a difference of opinion.  He thinks I shouldn’t need to give the dogs treats every time I ask them to do something.

Example:

When dinner is ready, we put the dogs on their mats and go into the kitchen to prepare our plates.  Tonight I brought Delilah in and lured her down with a carrot.  I waited a minute, told her to “Stay” and went into the kitchen.

We were having my new favorite dinner (Nachos) and it took a bit longer than normal.  Apparently it was too long for Delilah; she got up very quietly and came to sit at the edge of the kitchen.

I heard the slightest jingle of her collar and turned around and noticed her.

“Oh, it was too long for you sweetie,” I murmured with a slight chuckle.

As I walked back to her place with her, hubby said just loud enough for me to hear,  “No she just wants to do it her way.”

Does he know how to piss me off, or what?

After dinner I was telling him about my friend Ann and her frustration with her new puppy and trying to get him to “Stay.”  Someone watching Ann with her puppy made the following observation, “How dare you put him in a down and walk away.”  In the puppy’s eyes he doesn’t know what Ann wants from him.

Which is why I put Delilah in a down and waited a minute before walking away.

Hubby then said, “I noticed you used a carrot to put her in her down tonight, you know you have to stop using treats with her at some point.”

I tried explaining that I don’t usually give her a treat when I’m putting them on their places, but his attitude is really frustrating me.

He’s not a real firm believer of the positive reinforcement school of dog training.  I haven’t had time to finish reading my clicker training book, so I wanted to throw this out to blog land and ask you all for your thoughts and advice.

Have you disagreed with your spouse/significant other about the best way to train your dog?  If you’ve encountered resistance, how have you handled it?  If you use the positive dog training method how do you work it with your dog?  Do you train every day? For how long?

I KNOW this is the method that will work best for training Delilah, I just need to figure out the best way to do this.

For The Love Of Olivia….Day Two Hundred, Ninety Nine

September 25, 2011 By Jodi

We interrupt our regularly scheduled dogcast for this special announcement.

Today I want to stray from my traditional blog about my dogs, in order to introduce you to Olivia.

This sweet little girl was found outside in the pouring rain with a litter of kittens.  Extremely emaciated with an abscess on her back, this brave little mama wouldn’t abandon her kittens.

Somehow Olivia found her way to Our Companions; where she was treated for her abscess and then spayed.

Today Olivia, went to her forever home with my daughter Lynn and her husband Mark along with their other cat Ollie.

This afternoon I had the opportunity to spend some time with Olivia.  I found her to be friendly, outgoing, sweet and loving.  I’m so happy that Olivia’s story has a happy ending.

There are so many lessons to be learned from our furry friends not the least is the joy experienced by opening your heart and your home to those less fortunate than us.

A Good Dog Trainer…Day Two Hundred, Ninety Eight

September 24, 2011 By Jodi

I was blessed to find Sara when I was looking for a training classes for Sampson.  Sara is one of those dog trainers who understand people.  She trains dogs in traditional training methods, and she recommends what she thinks will work for your pet but won’t MAKE you do it her way.  She is wise enough to understand that not all methods work for all dogs.

Even though Sara does not use treats in her training classes, she does not discourage me from doing so.  Most of the dogs know I have treats because after class I am very free with whatever I have left.  On Thursday night; we did some heeling work, but we also practiced a lot of the down and sit stays.  I was amazed with Delilah because while she will do a down at home, she really fights me in a training class, but she was so good that night!!  She went into her downs very easily (of course I had treat in hand to reward her.)  Her stays had me a little confused; at times she got right up and followed me, or came to me without being called, but then there were the times when a lot of dogs were getting up and she just stayed there!  I really cannot figure her out.

There was one funny incident when one of the women called her dog and he got up and came to lean against me.  That would be my Brockway;  the outrageously HUGE Alaskan Malamute.

The whole point of this post is to remind you how important it is to feel comfortable with your trainer, if your trainer is forcing you to do something you don’t feel is right for your dog, then you should find another trainer.

This is the Saturday morning blog hop hosted by Two Little Cavaliers…..hop on.
