I Have a Crap-load of Pumpkin

October 29, 2013 By Jodi

Sampson and Delilah are fed a raw diet.  To help keep their tummies full I give them a scoop of pumpkin every morning.  I also use it to frost their treat bones.  Typically we go through a large can of pumpkin about every 5 or 6 days.

I don’t know how much pumpkin is where you live, but here in CT the large can of plain pumpkin is close to $4.  Luckily for me, the local warehouses carry the large cans of pumpkin in a three pack, which saves me over a dollar a can.

The bad news is the pumpkin is only in the warehouses at this time of year.  So I’ve been buying a case (or two) every weekend.

I have a crap-load of pumpkin.

Don’t believe me?  Take a look.

I knew when I went looking for a recipe for today’s Tasty Tuesday, I wanted to use pumpkin, but I also wanted to use some coconut flour because it’s just so darn tasty!

I searched and searched, but I had trouble finding a decent recipe.  I finally found one that called for two cups of oatmeal and 8 ounces of baby food.  I decided it was something I could work with.  Here’s where it gets impressive.

I invented my own recipe!!  Someone pick Jodi Chick up off the floor please.

Here’s what I used.

1 cup quick cooking oats
1/2 cup oat flour
1/4 cup coconut flour
1/4 cup shredded coconut
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
2 eggs

In a medium-sized bowl, mix the dry ingredients together just to incorporate them.  Then add the eggs and pumpkin, bring your muscles cause this dough is stiff.

Once it was mixed together, I just took small handfuls and formed balls with my hands, pressing them down onto a baking stone.

Bake in a pre-heated 350° oven.  Mine took about 22 minutes, but yours could take a little less or a little longer.

Cool and store.

So let’s see how the dogs liked the cookies.

Hey Sampson, how did you like the cookies I made for you last night?

Nom, nom Mama, this cookie is pawsome! Nom, nom Mama, this cookie is pawsome!!

Delilah, what did you think of the cookies that The Mama made last night?

WOOOOOOOSHHHH. Cookie? What cookie? Did you give me a cookie? IN…….HALE.   Cookie?  What Cookie?  Did you give me a cookie?  If you did, I didn’t taste it. You may want to give me another a cookie, just to try it like.

I’d say that’s a four paw rating.

So you know my rule right?  It has to be a treat that I can make that I will be able to eat as well.  Since there is no sugar involved, it’s not a sweet treat.  Here’s what I did.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I added a few M&M’s and a small amount of chopped walnuts to the tops of each cookie.  Still a little on the bland side, but not too bad.  I think this is a recipe I can play with and find the right combination, that will satisfy both the dogs and the humans in our house.

I can’t believe I’m actually typing this right now, but what I love about baking for my dogs is I know exactly what ingredients, as well as the quality of the ingredients in their treats.

Besides, my dogs love them and that makes me happy.  Have you tried baking for your pups yet? If you haven’t, what’s stopping you?

Fetch Mama

October 23, 2013 By Jodi

K-9 Kamp Kounselor Delilah here again, updating you on all the things we are doing to get fit and keep K-9 Kamp

F.U.N.

k9kampbadge-300x300

K-9 Kamp is a fun way to help get yourself and your humans in shape, hosted by our friends Koly and Felix at Kol’s Notes, Kelly and Ike at Peggy’s Pet Place and Gretel and Chester at You Did What With Your Weiner.

Whether you’re looking to lose a few pounds, tone some jiggly spots or just out to have fun with your canine/human counter part, K-9 Kamp is the place to do it.

There are lots of awesome Kampers participating and lots of awesome prizes, so make sure you stop by the host’s blogs and check it out.

With winter on the way, we need to take advantage of the outdoors as much as we can.  Sampson and I have a goal and that’s to help The Mama get into shape and lose some of her unwanted pounds.

Shhh Mama, I’m not going to tell them how out of shape and overweight you really are.  All they have to do is look at your photos.

Photos don’t lie Mama.

A couple of years ago Sampson and I were very overweight.  We went on a strict raw diet and daily walks and we both lost about 30 pounds.  Now we look and feel great!

But what do you think happened to The Mama during that time?  Did she get lean and mean like us?

Sadly the answer is no.  The Mama has gained weight in the last couple of years and despite our daily walks she hasn’t been able to drop those unwanted pounds.

With the help of K-9 Kamp, Sampson and I set out to change that.

One of the fun things we like to do is play fetch with The Mama.

Bubbers 2

Traditionally humans play fetch by tossing an object such as a Frisbee and encouraging the dog to go and retrieve it and bring it back.

That’s not how we roll.

We put our own spin on fetch and make The Mama work.  You can see what I mean in this video.

We let The Mama throw the disc, and pretend like we are going to bring it back, except we don’t.  Sampson holds onto it, while I run back to get The Mama and encourage her to finish her retrieve.

We’re working on getting her to run back for her retrieve instead of walking.  What can I say, she’s a work in progress.

Put the effort in Mama, it will pay off.

As for Sampson and I, well sometimes we just like to play a little tug of war with that Frisbee.

It’s that little something extra, that helps keep us fit and trim.

The Mama is saying that she lost some weight this past week, but I haven’t seen the numbers on the scale, so I can’t verify that.

Rest assured Mama, Sampson and I are here to help you.  We’ll get that weight off you, I promise.

Put the donut down Mama, it’s not helping your cause.

So how are the rest of you doing?  Do you need any tips or suggestions?

I Spy With My Little Eye

October 21, 2013 By Jodi

The leaves have been falling in our little corner of paradise for the last three or four weeks.  Last week during one of our walks I noticed that Delilah had a bunch of leaves plastered to the back of her left foot.

Fotor01019220717 Yup, poor Delilah.  She stepped in an ass bomb.

I pulled the leaves off and wiped as much of it as I could off and when we got home, I washed her foot.

Now if this had been Sampson I’d have had no idea where he picked this up, but seeing as Delilah is on leash and limited in her travels, I figured she picked it up on one of the trails.  So the next time we were out there, I found the offending pile in the middle of the trail and removed as much of it as I could.  I say as much of it, because the ass cake was right in the center of an embedded rock.

And no, butt nuggets do not rock.

This month’s #ScoopThatPoop blog hop is Poop Poetry.  I guess I should have checked before I designed this post.  Because I don’t have any poetry prepared.  I had to do it on the fly…sorry!

Don’t fly the coop
After you drop that poop
Teach your human to scoop
Before someone steps in that goop
And falls on their ass with a whoop!

I know it’s not always easy, I mean I’ve had them both pooping at the same time on different sides of me.

As I’ve mentioned before, poop from a raw fed dog is much harder than a standard poop.  What I may not have mentioned is….the color.  My dog’s poop is a mustard/yellow/gold color.

Did I mention that a LOT of the leaves that are falling in our woods are yellow?  Yup, sometimes I just can’t find that poop.

For example, see if you can spot the poop in this photo.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA (Yes my trained eye found the offending Lincoln Log and picked it up.)

This may not be the best example because most of these leaves have dried and turned brown, but I think you get the point.  Go ahead and guess, I already have a photo ready for Friday’s post that shows you just exactly where the colon cake is.

It’s like the Where’s Waldo of poop.  I spy with my little eye…….butt butter.

Anyway, I know all of you clean up after your dogs, but we need to find a way to get everyone to do this, it really helps cut down on the spread of diseases.

Besides, it’s the environmentally friendly thing to do.

So how do we get people to understand the benefits of cleaning up after their dogs?
