I’ve been living with a cold for the last week and a half. You know when you’re sick, you always have a day where you say, “This is the worst I’ve felt,” and usually after that day, you turn the corner and start feeling better?
I had three days in a row, where I thought that was the worst day.
Actually, the nights were worst. I’d fall asleep reading and as soon as I woke up, shut off the light, and lay down…I’d start coughing.
An uncontrollable, dry, tickling cough.
The first night it happened, I woke up at 1:30 in the morning, trying to cough up a lung. The second I started coughing, Delilah barked at me.
She barked. At me.
She was in her dog bed, on the floor, so I told her, “It’s okay, it’s only me coughing.” Wheezed out between coughs.
I coughed again.
She growled, got up, turned around in her bed, and lay back down.
I coughed.
She barked again.
I told her again, that it was just me.
This went on for about two minutes. Me coughing, her barking at me.
Like it was dueling banjos or something.
Finally, I got up and grabbed a cough drop, propped myself up with a pillow and tried to go back to sleep.
Delilah got up and thought, hey, I think I’ll climb on the bed with Mom and Sampson.
I put my hand up. “Go lie down, you aren’t climbing up next to me so you can bark at me every time I cough.”
I can laugh about this now, I can assure you, I wasn’t laughing about it at 1:30 Tuesday morning.
You make me laugh (or smile,) the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do that bring a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.
What did your pet do that made you laugh or smile this week?
