When Sampson was a puppy, sometimes he would squat to pee. Our trainer told us if he didn’t lift his leg by the time he was a year old, he probably never would. She also said, he had to have a male dog to show him how to lift his leg.
He squatted for probably the first two years of his life. I’m not sure why it bothered me so much, watching him squat, but I can’t tell you how proud I was the day he actually lifted his leg and peed on something.
Because he has bad knees, he still squats at times. Actually, it’s not so much a squat as it is a little dip of his hips. And now, it doesn’t bother me at all.
I was reminded of this story, yesterday morning when Delilah lifted her leg to pee on a telephone pole.
I had never seen a female dog lift, and Delilah didn’t start lifting until we started walking in the woods. When she first started doing it, I tried like hell to get a photo of it. I mean, really, how often do you see a female dog lifting her leg?
Eventually, I got the photo.
Now when Delilah ‘lifts’ she doesn’t raise her leg the same way a male dog does, it’s more like she rests her foot on the object she’s aiming for.
No matter how she does it, it makes me smile to see it and think about it.
What did your pet do to make you smile this week?
You make me smile (or laugh,) the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do that make me laugh or smile.

When Merlin was a pup he squatted, he would never pee or poop on walks. Until one day he started to squat on walks and then when he first lifted his leg i was so happy for him. Now it annoys me because he wants to stop at every single tree or pole lol. He will only lift his leg on walks and never does it at home. My guess is he’s got no other dogs to compete with in his yard.

Katie always loved to lift her leg like a boy on tall objects that needed marking. My sisters and I all do on occasion. Mom doesn’t like us to do that, but we don’t care. Madison is hilarious because she is so short, she really works to get the right spot, brace her paw on the object when she lifts, and then let it pee. Happy Sunday!

Ah, Delilah! You always have something up your sleeve! 😁 My grand-dog, Max, squats to pee once in a while, too. He also likes to eat socks. Ducky walks and pees at the same time when she’s in a hurry to get somewhere (like to chase a squirrel), or if she’s anxious about something (like a vet visit).

That’s a great way to deliver the peeMail!

Misty squats but lifts her leg ever so dainty to make sure there is no backsplash on it.

I’m a girl, but sometimes I lift my leg. I’m also not above humping people when I’m nervous or worried.
Love and licks,
Cupcake

That just made me smile. D-Dog ‘running with the boys.’ You show ’em how it’s done, girl! Sam has started ‘leaning’ in his older years. I love it because he kind of looks around to see if anyone is watching. Cracks me up. That dog is sooooo vain!

I love this! Cricket used to almost always lift her leg to pee, but she lifted it forward like Delilah is doing, not backwards like a male would. I just loved it, it made us smile every darn time.
Our golden retriever Moses squatted, even long after he was over a year old; and he had Kobi to show him how to do it right! I know what you mean though, we always waited for him to lift that leg! I think it was only rare occasions that he did. Of course, it didn’t matter eventually, but it still made us chuckle.
