Delilah is a water bowl whore. Hubby thinks it’s because she doesn’t get a lot of water when she drinks, I think she’s using the water to make herself feel full. I don’t know who’s right, (although I do suspect it’s me) 🙂 All I know is just before and just after meal time, if you put a gallon of water in the bowl, she will drink it.
Because Delilah thinks the water bowl is the Field of Dreams, when we put water in it, we only put in as much as we want her to drink.
Once the initial gorging is over, you can add more water, but you want to make sure a good ten minutes or so have past.
Every morning when I’m washing up the dog’s breakfast dishes, I wash their water bowl too, and then I put just enough water in it, to let Delilah quench her thirst, without drinking too much.
Because of this ritual, there have been mornings where I forgot to add more water, and I’ve actually gone to work and then realized I didn’t fill the bowl. I’ve had to call my sister to come over and give the dogs water.
I’ve written before about how Sampson handles the situation when there is no water in the bowl. Most times he digs at the bowl with his paw. Since it’s a metal bowl, his nails make a definite sound on it.
I think his method might depend on how thirsty he is, because most times he waits patiently by the bowl for someone to fill it.
Friday morning I went down to see mom without putting more water in the bowl.
Sometimes he tips the bowl over.
Do you remember the time his ear was resting in the water?
This photo was also taken when he was sporting his Zombie eye.
No matter what he’s doing around that water bowl, odds are, I’m laughing about it.
You make me laugh, or smile. The sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do that make me laugh or smile.
What did your pet do this week that made you laugh or smile?

We have several water bowls around so we are never empty, but out favorite one often goes empty, it’s in Mom’s office, so she usually sees us licking and getting nothing. It is a self filling one. We all drink lots of water which is a good thing, but we don’t drink in excess.

Merlin has a self-filling one and it’s good as i can monitor how much he drinks. He’s a messy drinker as i can see where he’s been from the water trails he leaves behind.

My last dog Smokey would come tell me when hers was empty. I’d follow her and she would look from me to her bowl and back again.

Water wars of a different kind.

Callie was my biggest water drinker. I used to have to fill the water bowl 4 or 5 times a day. With Shadow and Ducky, 3 times a day is plenty.
As to Delilah, I suspect you’re right about her using the water to make herself feel full/satisfied. And just so you know, you’re not alone in forgetting to put out fresh water before you leave for work. That happened to me a couple of times. Luckily, I had an understanding supervisor who let me sign in for the day and then race home to give Callie and Shadow their water. It was only a 10-minute drive in each direction, so I was usually back at my desk before the first calls started coming in to the call center. Geez, I’m glad those days are long gone!

Hey, when you’re thirsty you gotta do something about it!

He’s charmingly subtle about it, isn’t he? 😍

He gets a lot of attention-milage out of a simple water bowl.

With the heat ours keep running out of water. However, they have never been as cute as Sampson about it.

You kids are communicators and problem solvers. If I check my bowl and it’s empty, I walk away and go to sleep. Ditto if I lose a cookie or a toy under the couch. It’s a good thing Mom is a mind reader.
Love and licks,

Sampson has a way of getting his point across!! Cricket drank a ton of water due to her heart medications. So much, that after she was gone for a bit, we realized Luke wasn’t drinking hardly any water at all! We had never caught on to that, because we were filling the bowl sometimes twice per day, now when I check it, hardly any is gone. I’m thinking of getting him a fountain so he’ll drink more.
