A few days ago, Sampson found an apple on our morning walk. I made a mental note, because I know one dog, that would scarf that apple right up.
Long time readers know, Delilah loves her food, and many has been the walk when I’ve had to wrestle food from her. It can be very disconcerting, shoving your hand into a gnashing mouth, without knowing WHAT you’re going to pull out.
I’m thinking someone probably threw it out thinking the birds would eat it, but as far as I know, it has only attracted the attention of dogs. 🙂
Since noticing the apple, I’ve avoided that side of the street with Delilah on our nightly walk. Except for Friday night.
Friday night I apparently was distracted. Just as we approached the area, a car turned down the street, so I stayed tucked behind a parked truck.
Snap! I forgot about that damn apple. Yup. Delilah found it. But I still didn’t realize this.
After the car passed I moved to get around the truck and noticed someone was distracted. Sure enough, she had that apple in her mouth.
Delilah’s come a long way, but she still hasn’t quite mastered “drop it,” but thankfully, she’s gotten pretty good with “leave it,” which she did. And that made me smile.
What did your pets do that made you smile this week?
P.S. Yesterday morning I remembered the apple, it was daylight, and I had a spare poop bag, so I picked up that apple and disposed of it.

Oh Delilah! There’s a gross rotting apple along one of our sidewalks, but neither of my girls is interested in it. Rye is more interested in abandoned buns–which seems to line the sidewalk every trash day (and who is having cookouts when it’s below freezing!?!)–and there’s not much I hate more than trying to fish a soggy bun out of her throat. I’m glad Delilah cooperated with leaving the apple behind 🙂

Hailey is pretty good with on by, which is our leave it. She is terrible at drop it. But she lets me take things out of her mouth so that is good.
Glad you thought to pick up the apple so it is not a problem, until the next one shows up!

Good girl, Delilah! Luke got a hold of one of hubby’s socks this week and thought he was going to have some fun with that. He gave it up, but it did take a couple of tries. I know you’re not supposed to repeat commands, but sometimes he doesn’t seem to think I’m serious on the first try. 🙂

Oh, Delilah! The Rs are very good about “drop it.” However, that just made Jeffie chug whatever it was down faster!

I’m glad D-Dog has at least mastered “leave it”. 😄 Ducky – who is D’s Southern counterpart – has only mastered “leave it” when it comes to inside the house. Outside, her obstinate trait takes over; and she will only (maybe) leave it if I’m standing right over her, ready to pull it out of her mouth. 🙄

Sure beats the small dead animal like the last chow hound I had and whose jaws would lock tight with anything thrown out for the wild critters. *Sigh* Trying to wrestle that dead frozen bird was a real feat. As I recall, we ended up with feathers everywhere and the poor thing got ripped from limb to limb. 😬

Now that there is a puppy in the house, I can’t even begin to count all the smiles!
The worst thing I ever had to pull out of my dog’s mouth? A rabbit head! Wilson was rooting around under a bush so I yanked him back. I could instantly tell he had a huge prize by his proud walk. Drop it, leave it, not working! Had to pry it out. So gross…….
