I hated to acknowledge it at the ages of 7 and 8 1/2, but now at almost 12, and 13 1/2; there’s no more living in Denial land.
I have Senior dogs.
And while it’s a blessing to have old dogs in your life, it’s also a bit sad to watch them adjusting to the everyday changes in their bodies. Sampson has had two knee injuries and one knee surgery. While I suspect he’s had arthritis in his front paws for a while (over compensation for those bad knees) the knee and hip arthritis has only been diagnosed in the last couple of years.
We have Sampson on a protocol of supplements and pain meds that seem to be working for him. But since Sampson does an enormous amount of sleeping, I really wanted to get him an orthopedic bed.
Enter Brentwood Home Orthopedic dog beds.
You guys, Brentwood Home Orthopedic Dog beds hit all my criteria.
- They are made in the US (California to be exact).
- They are made with Pet Friendly, Non-Toxic Materials (CertiPUR-US certified foams that are safe to sleep, and chew on. (Not that I have any bed chewers mind you).
- The design is classic, so it works with any décor.
- The fabric is furniture grade with lock stitching to hold up against tug-of-war, messy treats and scratching. (Yes, I DO have two scratchers in the house).
- The cover is quilted and not only removable, but washable as well.
- Oh…and those CertiPUR-US foams I mentioned? There are two layers…the top layer is memory foam, while the second layer provides the orthopedic support base, these foam layers are protected by a waterproof liner, in case of any type of liquid accident.
Choosing the right size bed
So…I made a mistake when I was ordering the bed, and I did not measure the beds we have now vs the size of the beds on the Brentwood Home website, and I ordered an extra-large, (a large would have worked just fine.) Let me tell you, the bed is HUGE.
It is fully the length of a love seat, but it works for Sampson because he is a stretch out type of dog, vs Delilah who typically curls up. It’s also large enough for one of Sampson’s peeps to snuggle up in the front of the TV or fireplace and cuddle on a cold winter’s night.
I joked with Hubby that on those super cold winter nights, I might bring my blanket out and cuddle up in front of the fire…on Sampson’s bed. It’s that comfy!
Brentwood Home has two different styles of dog beds, so which bed is right for you?
Well that all depends on what your pet prefers.
The Runyon has the bolsters on three sides, perfect for using as pillows, or for the pets who like that additional security.
The Griffith has no sides, for those guys who like to stretch out, or hang their heads over the side.
What about color choices?
There are three color choices listed on the website, Sandstone, Charcoal and Mocha. The color we chose is called Raven, (it is like a midnight blue with a gray/white criss cross pattern), but it’s not listed on their website yet.
What if I’m like you and order the wrong size?
Well if you forget to measure, or just misjudge the size, Brentwood Home offers free returns within 30 days.
Warranties and whatnot
They also stand by the quality of their products, so the bed comes with a 3-year warranty.
AND…if something DOES happen to that cover, (you HAVE a chewer or a scratcher), you can purchase the cover separately. Isn’t that awesome?

Stuff I have to tell you…
Shadow and Ducky's Mom says
I’d love to get one of the Runyon beds for Shadow to sleep on in the bedroom at night. Poor girl can’t get up on my bed any more – damn arthritis – but she deserves a comfy bed that’s all hers.
Lauranne says
I was going to suggest you could use it as your spare bed – great minds 🙂
Emma says
Glad they love the bed. I know we love ours. It would have been really awesome for Katie, but no matter what Mom bought for her to sleep on, she always wanted to lay on the hard floors. Not the case with us hounds! We love comfy!
Rachel Monn says
she does both! depends on her mood.
Ellie Davis says
She is a stretcher
Scott Davis says
Depending on the temperature, he likes to do either one.
Dawn says
Looks like an awesome bed. Malarky uses beds the most and she loves to stretch out.
Cheryl Chervitz says
I have a 12 year old Boston that starts out curled up and then stretches out as he sleeps. This would be great for him.
Pup Fan says
Tavish takes up a surprisingly large amount of space for such a small dog. He likes to be nestled though. 🙂
Also, I really do need a new dog bed after the recent skunk incident!
peggy frezon says
Petey sleeps on his back with his feet in the air! Ernest likes to curl up.
Betty B. says
My youngest pup likes to spread out the other one she likes to curl up!
Maggie says
I LOVE that it’s made from non-toxic materials!! That is SO huge for me. As for the stretch out or curl up… Cooper does both depending on the temperature! The colder it is, the curlier he becomes. And, of course, then I cover him up with a blanket and tuck him in. He’d sure love to be tucked into one of these awesome beds!!
caren gittleman says
We reviewed our bed from Brentwood this past Monday, we LOVE IT!!
Sue says
Wow! That extra large bed really is humongous! Great review and I appreciate your criteria. And such a good looking dog bed!
Stefanie says
I wonder if I could put that bed on my bed on HER side so she doesn’t crowd me in the winter…
I love how Sampson did the obligatry head on the bolster to appease you. Hahahaha!
Monika & Sam 🐾 says
We so want one of those beds! Talk about features…no wonder Sampson gave it a go. He saw just how wonderful it would treat his joints and bones.
Kelly D says
He likes to stretch out.
Michel says
He curls up into the cutest ball!
alicia gordon says
both of my dogs like to stretch out! They take up our whole bed and need one of their own!
Jeanne Coulombe says
My Lucy does both one minute she’s in a ball next sprawled straight out silly dog love her so much.

My senior rescue Sammi likes to stretch out. She was a puppy mill mom for many years in a cage and now she likes to lie all stretched out and comfy. She has weak legs from atrophie and a heart murmur but is the happiest girl. She either sleeps or rests a lot though. Are you using glucosamine? I find that helps her a lot.
Meagan & Merlin says
Great bed. Merlin does both depending on the weather. He doesn’t use the couch or bed as much when it’s hot, he’d rather sleep on the bathroom tiles. He also loves pillows. When he was a pup he slept with his head behind or under a pillow, usually the same pillow i was using lol.
Dee Johnson says
My pup loves to curl up.
Beth Patterson says
Two of my dogs almost always curl up, and the third is more likely to stretch out. These beds sound amazing. I’ve decided that I’m done with beds that don’t have a removable cover.
Melody says
Both stretch and curl,
Jan K says
I love this bed so much….it hit all my criteria too. If ours was that big, I’d totally be curling up in it with Luke (Cricket prefers her space when sleeping)! I do wish we’d had this bed when we had Sheba…her arthritis was much worse than Cricket’s is, and I think she would have loved it. Then I would have had to get a larger size though because she always liked to stretch out!
Courtney Stock says
My Fluffy Mutt Stretches out. My Boxer can either curl up or stretch out. It depends. If he is stretched out he takes up more space than when he’s curled up
Lisa Friend says
I have 2 dogs – a mini daschund and a mastiff. They both stretch out.
Lisa F. says
My dogs do both. What I love is when they curl up together.
Beth says
Sounds like this is a big hit for everyone! Both Barley and Rye usually curl up in little balls with their tails over their noses, but sometimes Bar sprawls on her back with her legs up in the air and Rye will do that, too, but she’ll wiggle UNDER the bed before doing that when she’s in her crate 🙂
Julie says
My pup loves to stretch out!
Jeanie Hicken says
Tooter loves to stretch out.
Erin Ellis says
He really loves to do both. He stretches out during the day, and curls up at night. Thank you!
Melissa Storms says
My dog curls up tail to nose.

He curls up into a cute ball!

I’m cheating because I have a cat, haha! She usually sleeps curled up, but loves to stretch out when she wakes up.
