You make me smile, (or laugh). The sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis, that brings a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.
I’m pretty sure you all know this guy, right?
I’m also pretty sure I’ve mentioned before what a social butterfly he is. He loves people. He sees a person outside and he wants to be their friend. A car slows down on our walk, and he sees a new friend.
And people love him. It’s his gift to the world. It’s almost magic. Because once he catches their attention, they’re his friends. And he will greet them as enthusiastically today, as he did yesterday and he’ll do the same tomorrow. And he expects the same in return.
In our neighborhood we have a man who delivers the paper in his car. This guy had a tendency to pluck on my last nerve, because he would come right up behind me on a walk, or whip around and pull in front of me. And if Sampson is the dog I’m walking, then Sampson slows down, turns around and tries to woo a new friend.
Many was the walk where I wished I’d had the ability to blow one of his tires out with my mind.
Then one day, while Sampson was visiting one of his friends, the paper guy pulled into her yard to deliver her paper. And she introduced Sampson.
The man was nice, he asked if he could pet him and I said yes, so he did. Then he got in his car and drove off.
Flash forward to a day last week. I’m walking Sampson past one of his friend’s houses, and I see the newspaper delivery guy heading up the street. As it happens, he pulls up to deliver the paper to Mrs. Whinnem, and Sampson (who LOVES Mrs. Whinnem) has already been walking really slowly, to see if she’s outside (she wasn’t). And here comes the paper guy, so I try to get Sampson to cross the street, but he sees his new friend, and so he resists.
The guy puts the paper in the box, puts the car in park, opens his door and says, “Hi Sampson,” with a big smile on his face. I attempt to apologize, and the guy says, “He just wants to say hello, it’s easier this way.”
He gives Sampson a nice little rub on his head, says goodbye to me, and gets in his car and drives away.
Sampson, when you can make friends with someone who irritates me, you make me smile!
Cupcake says
You make EVERYBODY smile, S. Making friends everywhere you go is a great quality. You nailed it!
Love and licks,
Cupcake
Jodi says
He does. He’s like a doggy ambassador.
Emma says
We dogs like to do that kind of stuff to keep you humans on your toes. Bailie is our PR Dog who likes to meet and greet everyone. You are a good boy, Sampson!
Jodi says
Because dogs are as close to perfect as anything I’ve ever known!
Sue says
So many times Sampson reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: “God sent angels down to earth in the form of dogs with notes saying don’t judge, just love. They ate the notes but they keep trying to deliver the message.” I chalk your story up to proving the quote is true.
Jodi says
I love that analogy. Well, you know his story too. So that’s doubly special to me.
Jan K says
Sampson sees the good in everyone, and brings out the good as well! I guess we could all learn something from that!
Kobi was my social dog; he loved everyone too. His favorite guy was an elderly gentleman who drove around the neighborhood with dog bones in his car. He’d always stop when he saw us walking and give Kobi, or whatever dog I had, a bone.
Of course, then Kobi thought every car that drove by should stop and give him a bone! LOL
Jodi says
Awe…..Kobi, what a sweetie. I think Sampson thinks the same way, he sees a car and he insists on stopping and checking it out…just in case there is someone in there that wants to pet him. 😀
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
That’s the way Callie always was and Shadow has always been…Shadow loves the Terminix guy, the plumber, electrician, the cable guy. You name a human, she loves them. Ducky could learn a lot from her older sister. (But we love her anyway – to the moon and back.)
Jodi says
Sweet Callie. Delilah will go up to people to say hello, but only because she knows I will give her a treat. LOL
Jackie Bouchard says
Awww, that’s so nice. (Rita is distrusting of strange men, and since I’m a shy, introverted, curmudgeon, that works out well for me. Our last dog, Abby, loved everyone though and would force me to talk to strangers!)
Jodi says
I like to socialize, so I don’t mind so much. Unless he’s dragging me over to someone I’m not fond of. LOL
Lauranne says
The guy knows how to get on with dogs so he can’t be all bad – you’ll have to keep repeating that to yourself when he next annoys you 😀
Jodi says
I guess so. if Sampson DIDN’T like him, it’d be so much easier though!
Pamela says
Is there any chance we could convince Sampson to run for political office? I think we could use him.
Jodi says
From your lips Pamela. I think the whole country could use some good dog therapy right about now. And learn how to cover that shit up and move on. 😉
How Sam Sees It says
That’s so sweet! I’m normally an introvert, and Harlow has forced me to talk to so many people, just because she is the happiest little extroverted dog you are likely to meet. …and I’ve made quite a few friends because of her.
Monty, Harlow, and Ramble

They are great ambassadors, aren’t they?
