When I was a kid, the whole premise of Trick or Treat was, you knocked on someone’s door, and said “Trick or Treat.” The idea was the nice person who was at the door, would give you a treat. Those folks that didn’t give you a treat, (or the ones who gave out APPLES and PENNIES) were fair game to have some kind of dirty trick played on them. Like toilet papering their house or something.
Well times change (as we all know) and the devious bloggers at Kol’s Notes, and Beagles & Bargains, decided to put their own evil little spin on Trick or Treating. That’s right, they came up with a Trick or Treat blog hop, the key difference being, participating bloggers will be showing you how to train your dogs with tricks and YOU get the chance to win a $300 gift card to PetSmart and some amazingly awesome treats, by our sponsors at Caru, Nature’s Logic, The Honest Kitchen.
But this isn’t like your traditional blog hop where you link up. Oh no. You don’t have to do anything like that in order to win prizes. All you have to do is visit the participating bloggers and enter using the widgets on their blogs. Sounds easy, right?
I’ll give you the participating bloggers in a minute, right now I’m going to show you how easy it is to teach your dog a trick that I’m calling, “BOO!”
I read somewhere that if you have a dog that is exhibiting a behavior you aren’t particularly fond of, teach the dog to do the trick on command, and the dog will do the behavior less. It sounds good in theory, we’ll see how that works.
So Delilah has a habit of coming up behind me (or Hubby) and shoving her head between your legs. If you follow us on Instagram, you’ll have seen pictures of this. Personally, I think it’s adorable, unless I’m in the middle of bending over, or have, say, a hot cup of tea in my hand. You can see how that might be problematic, no?
I thought, let’s try and teach this on command and see how it goes.
Here’s what I did.
I started out with Delilah in a sit behind me. (When you look at the video you’ll notice I have to redirect her a bit. I told you there were some tasty treats involved.)
I told Delilah to “Stay” and then I took a few steps away from her. (Remember, you want to start off easy and close, you can increase your distance over time.)
Once I was in position, I opened my legs and called her to me, and gave her the treat.
If your dog is hesitant, you can actually bend down and look at them from between your legs, this should be exciting enough for them to come to you. Or you can show them the treat and then toss it a few inches in front of you.
Once your dog has the idea of what you are expecting of them, you can add your cue word.
And that’s how we trained “BOO!”
Check out the video to see how it looks. (I apologize for the darkness and lack of clarity, and then annoying music that doesn’t stop, but I promise, I’m working on getting better!)
So, if you’re looking for some great tricks to add to your dog’s resume, check out Kol’s Notes, Beagles and Bargains and these other awesome bloggers.
I told you the prizes were awesome, and I wasn’t kidding. Check it out.

That was great! I’d love to teach that to Luke just for the fun of it. I hope you’ll let us know if your plan works and she starts doing it less. I can see where that might be startling at times – LOL! (but it’s also pretty cute).

my oldest knows lots of tricks, she was a very fast learner, the 2 younger girls know a few, it takes time and being consistent to train to do tricks. my oldest could prance, roll over and play dead, dance, shake, etc. the 2 younger girls just do the normal ones, except the youngest can talk and curl up her lip. i used treats and worked with them on a daily basis. i need to work more with the 2 younger girls. we dont know this trick. however, i have done the stay and wait and moved further away, even going to other rooms in the house or hiding behind a chair. then calling them and making them sit or lie down.

Fun trick! We don’t know this yet.

Wow…that’s a pawsome giveaway! Well done. And well done on teaching D-dog the trick. With my two knuckleheads, I don’t need treats to teach them to do something like that! The trick is for me not to get up-ended head over tea-cup style. Still working on that one-apparently I’m a slow learner. 😉
Tenacious Little Terrier says
He does but we haven’t done it in a really long time. I suppose we should brush up on it.

I have tried to make my dog stay but if i move one inch he gets up and follows me! ugh!
Jodi says
That is tough! You might be able to see in the video, that Delilah also struggled with staying. I had to be very firm with her. 🙂
KateV says
My dogs don’t know this one, but I might try it. It’s a useful trick for agility as you can use it to line your dog up where you want them at the start line to get a better line in the opening sequence.

My dog doesn’t know this trick. I have a 4 year old Boxer, & she’s really hyper and gets excited easily.. so sometimes she has difficulty trying to pay attention long enough to learn tricks lol.
Michele Cupp says
So cute! My dog will stay, but I’m not sure I could get her to come through my legs for now at least. She’s a recent rescue who came to us with a lot of fear, so while she warmed up to me quickly, the unknown is still a bit scary.
Carolyn says
My dog doesn’t know this trick. She has a decent stay though.
