Delilah’s a lunatic.
Some days I laugh on the spot at her lunacy and other days…well other days, I have to wait to laugh, or at least wait until after I’ve spoken to the vet to be sure she’s going to be okay.
Last week I picked the grandkids up from school and brought them to my house. The Boy promptly went downstairs to get away from his sister, while the Girl, stayed upstairs with me.
Like most good Grandma’s, I have some books and toys set aside for them. The Girl went digging about and came up with a small Play-Doh set. “Can I play with this?” she asked, holding it up to show me.
“Of course you can.” I replied and set her up on top of the pool table with her new found treasure. It had been a while since anyone had played with it, and the Play-Doh was quite hard. I tried warming it up a bit and manipulating it with my hands so she could at least make a few cutouts.
After a short time, she decided she was done with the Play-Doh and went off to do something else. I was looking for a show for her to watch on TV, when I heard a slurping noise.
“Shit!” I screamed. The Girl looked at me (thankfully she didn’t ask me what shit meant, although on Saturday she did ask about bad ass, but that’s another story.)
“What?” she asked, without looking away from the TV.
“Delilah ate the Play-Doh. Time to call the vet.”
Thankfully, Play-Doh is non-toxic. A bunch of dogs or kids must have ingested a lot of Play-Doh, because Play-Doh (thankfully) spells that shit out right on the box. “NON-TOXIC.” (BTW, I discovered that while I was ON the phone with the vet’s office.)
The vet thought there might be a high salt content in the Play-Doh, and that Delilah might be thirsty later on, a fact I reminded her of as she was slurping up an entire bowl of water later that evening.
As I was cleaning up from dinner, I went around the back side of the breakfast bar and found some hard, dry cheese that was somehow missed in the cleanup from Mom’s birthday dinner.
Yeah, the dog ate the Play-Doh, but left the cheese.
Go figure.

Wow! Rudy and Rosie are shocked. Not about the Play-Doh, but about that cheese! She may have lost all her dog cred with them. I’m just grateful that so many kids have sampled Play-Doh that they’ve made sure its not toxic!
Emma says
I’m guessing the cheese is something she had eaten before, but the Play-Doh was a new delicacy and who knows what flavor it had! At least it wasn’t harmful and I bet you got some interesting poop color from it!
Mary Hone says
Clearly her job is to keep you on your toes.
Maggie says
Oh, Delilah! 🙂 I swear, she and Emmett are long-lost siblings.
One thing I’ve learned over the years with him and our nephews… kids’ things are almost entirely non-toxic, even crayons and most markers! Kids ingest lots of things, so it makes sense. But, like you, I learned that mostly after calls to the vet… Emmett has eaten BOXES of crayons (sigh), a few markers, and a good heap of Play-Doh. 🙂 Glad she’s OK!

Silly girl, always keeping you on your toes.
Lauranne says
Wow, she really keeps you on your toes doesn’t she!

New entrees are more interesting than ones she has consumed before. This makes me glad my dogs are picky eaters
Monika & Sam says
Oh D-girl, you make us all smile with your antics, er I mean adventures. Now that mommy is breathing again, please be kind to her, ok?
Your fur-iend,
Sam🐾

LOL! Can’t believe she left the cheese!

I’m going to take a wild guess here and suggest that the Play Doh coming out is going to be a lot more pliable and a lot less pleasant than the Play Doh that went in.
Cupcake says
Play Doh smells delicious. If it were up to me, I would have eaten the Play Doh and washed it down with a chaser of stale cheese. That is the recipe for a happy day.
Love and licks,
Cupcake

Oh Delilah!! You silly girl! And naughty Grandma cussing in front of the little one. 😂 Thank Goodness there’s no playdoh in this house (that I know of anyway)…Ducky would probably eat it, too!
Jan K says
Oh, Delilah, there is just not a dull moment with you around! We’re glad your Mom didn’t have to worry for TOO long on this one!
Elaine says
Oh my gosh, I can’t believe she opted for the Play-Doh! I can’t wait for the follow-up post after you see the Play-Doh once again, haha!
Jen Gabbard says
Seriously she’s such a handful (but in an endearing way, at least after the fact). I’m glad it ended up being safe because that would have been one super un-fun way to spend an evening at the vets. And yeah, of course she left the cheese – because she’s Delilah lol.
Christie says
Hi! I just found this blog and I love it! So glad Delilah got to, ahem, enjoy her play-doh without any serious consequences. 🙂

Hahahahahaha!! Silly goofball! We LOVE cheese!
Rebekah says
Hahahahahaha!! I needed this laugh!
(I ate play doh once as a child. It was very salty.)
Beth says
Oh boy! I don’t think that Barley would even have let cheese hit the ground in the first place–but she’d probably be more than willing to give play-doh a shot, too 😉

Bear is a strange one … he hates cheese … but one time I had some onion dip that was accurately labeled as “bodacious” (aka SPICY), and he cleaned my plate of it when I got up to get more water. He’ll lick my Oreos but refuse cooked turkey. Now I know better … nothing gets left out no matter how “sure” I am that he won’t eat it :p

So glad that Play-do is non toxic. As soon as I read this I assumed it had something in it that was bad for dogs. I just remember loving how it smells! My dogs would probably eat both the Play-do and the cheese and would get sick from the combo. Glad all was OK – and good to know about Play-do!

I do remember PlayDoh being non-toxic. When we were kids and parents had no money, we used to make our own and used food coloring to color it. It was pretty easy to make (basic baking staples). I do remember a lot of salt in it. I am glad to hear they have not changed it much in 50 years…lol.
