Yesterday was the second day of spring.
Our weather forecasters waffled all weekend. We might have snow, it might be a slushy mix, we were getting a Nor’easter. I decided to take the wait and see approach.
When I got up and looked out my window yesterday morning we’d gotten about four or five inches of snow.
I took Sampson out first. One of the big reasons we walk, is to help get things moving along…if you get my drift.
Being on short walks, Sampson usually does his business within the first five minutes. Yesterday was no exception, and Sampson decided to do his business in the deep snow.
So there’s a reason it’s called a steamer. The poop is leaving a body with temperature of approximately 101 to 102 degrees and hitting air temperature of 28 degrees. AND when something hot hits the snow…well it basically just drops.
Simplified:
The snow is cold.
The poop is hot.
When poop hits snow,
It just drop, drop, drops.
Trying to pick something up that keeps melting the snow around it can be quite challenging. Let’s just say it took me a few minutes and I ended up with a bunch of snow in the bag.
SO when Delilah decided to go under a tree where the snow wasn’t so deep, I was super grateful.
Picking her business up was much easier than Sampson’s, with the exception of her kicking. Delilah tends to kick stuff over her business. (Even though I’m picking it up!)
Typically I know exactly when she’s going to kick and I take evasive maneuvers to avoid whatever it is she’s kicking, dirt, grass…SNOW.
But it was 6:00 am, and apparently I wasn’t quite awake. So I bent over to pick up the poopies and it was like someone was shooting paint balls at my ass.
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat.
I stood up and hissed at her, “Will you please stop pummeling my ass.”
Does anyone else have these kinds of problems?

My dogs both scent mark after going potty, too! I try to wait them out until they are done to bend over and pick it up. LOL
Genevieve says
It’s all about patience. I stand there watching and wait out the digging and tossing of dirt clods. Breathe. Check the sky. Plan the day. Twiddle my thumbs. When Miss-all-of-a-sudden-I’m-the-neatest-tidiest-dog-in-the-world is finished, then and only then will I bend down and pick it up.
Emma says
Our only problem according to the mom is when she is focused on picking up and we take off after something like a critter rather than holding our stay. It really angers her, but so far, no injuries or anything have resulted. If you humans could get things picked up faster it would help.
Julie says
Sometimes after Cocoa poops she gets all crazy and wants to run. So I will be picking up poop and making sure it gets in the bag and she is running around me and I am spinning in circles while closing the poop bag and hoping people do not think we are totally nuts, haha.

Years ago I moved to a place where it never snows, so to answer your question, no…
Mary Ann says
Oh boy! I just don’t get why they kick up grass, snow, dirt, whatever. Thankfully, Lila doesn’t have that problem. I bet getting snow in your face woke you up fast!
B's human says
This is the funniest comment because you said you were pummeled in your bottom, but Mary Ann said you got snow in your face. Bahahahahaha!
lauranne says
Mity used to do that, once I think it was my sister who ended up with a mouthful of leaves as she had bent down before he had finished doing his “feet wiping” routine

That is funny!

Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
Too funny!! I can’t say I have had that problem.
DZ Dogs says
Nope no kickers here!
Dachshund Nola says
I admit, I freaking laughed my ass off! Pike will sometimes kick, and I can’t stand it.

your heading had me thinking you were going to be talking about woodpeckers since
spring has sprung early this year for us.
when lily is done she just walks away from it and waits till i double bag it. still i usually leave a smear behind because its soft which i try to cover up the best that i can. hoping it dries out before it gets steped in. if close to home i make her walk faster till we can get in our yard. after cleaning our yard i know where to avoid stepping for a couple days.
Monika & Sam says
Haha…I snorted out loud on that one! Rat-a-tat-tat indeed. Sam never kicks and while nice steamy piles are fine, I prefer them to be in the shallowest possible spot of snow. But with Sam…oh noooo. Not content at the whole waiting and sniffing, sniffing and waiting game for the absolute most perfect spot on the planet in sub-zero temps (can you say Brrrrr?), he has to find the one spot that is the deepest possible spot of snow and most of the time it’s right at the entrance to someone’s sidewalk going up toward their front door. Are you freaking kidding me? Nothing subtle about that. Damn dog.
Hawk aka BrownDog says
Hi Y’all!
I don’t do that! My Human has me sit anyway.
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
hahaha only you Jodi! only you!
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
Oh Jodi!! Your poop stories always give me a severe case of the giggles! And the expression on Delilah’s face is priceless!
2 Brown Dawgs says
LOL that can get messy.
