You make me smile (or laugh), the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do on a daily basis that brings a smile to my face and a laugh to my lips.
Sampson, the way you love to lay out in the sun, even though you are hot and panting…
You make me smile.
Naturally as soon as I noticed he was panting, I called him inside and had him drink some water and cool down.
Do your dogs stay outside even when they are obviously hot? How do you handle that?
Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
Nellie does that same exact thing, she even does it when laying in bed, she is hot as hell, panting up a storm but refuses to go lay on the cool floor.

Lady Girl loves to sit in the sun and she pants as well. I make sure she has water outside and she has shade if she chooses to use it. I also have a doggy pool for her!!

When I’m having a perfectly fine 120 degree street nap on the asphalt, Mom bribes me with treats to get up and come inside (or at least in the shade). She says the word, “It’s too hot.” Wrong – Didn’t she ever read Goldilocks and the 3 Bears? – Too hot for HER is just right for me!
Love and licks,

Cricket is the only one that lies in the sun to the point where she’s panting. Sheba mostly stays in the shade, and Luke is usually indoors with us, or moving from place to place when he’s outside.
Cricket will usually move to the shade or come indoors before we have to make her move. We always have a bowl of water on the deck and in the yard too.

The Poodles avoid the hot sun, but Chamois the generic dog needs to commune with the mother ship by lying in the sun and glowing.
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
Ducky’s the same way! She loves to sunbathe! If it’s really hot, I only let them stay out for about 5-10 minutes at a time anyway, and reserve play time for early morning and early evening (just before the sun starts setting). Then we’ll play inside during the day.

I lie in my front window bed until I’m panting so hard I can barely breath, and then slide off onto a shady floor spot. Outside I lie in the sun until I’m well done too. Mom lets me choose when I want to move or if I want water.
Hailey and Zaphod says
Both mine will seek shade if they get hot, so I guess we are lucky. Stay cool!

He looks so chilled!! This made ME smile, too!!

It’s ironic how they will find a sunny spot and lay in it even though they might be panting though I guess that’s the way their bodies cool themselves off. Like you, I make sure fresh water is nearby just in case. 😉

With Cody’s thick coat, it’s sometimes a challenge to keep him cool in the summer. I offer plenty of shady spots (which he enjoys) and over his dinner, I pour some water so he’s getting that extra hydration from his meals.

All of our dogs have done the same thing, especially Molly, our great dane mix when she got older. I always thought she was “baking her old, sore bones.” She is no longer with us, but truly a heart dog for my family.

I think it is an old dog thing. Thunder does it too. 🙂 But it also gives them Vitamin D so I allow it within reason, then I call them in like you did.
Blueberry's human says
I think dogs instinctively know they need the Vitamin D from the sun. I have a dog door and since I can’t monitor Blueberry when I am at work, I trust that she is smart enough to come in out of the heat when she’s gotten her daily dose of Vitamin D.

That must be like when we take a really hot bath or shower. The water’s SO hot, but it feels good at the same time.
