Saturday I had scheduled a pedicure in preparation for BlogPaws, I also had a few errands to run.
Hubby’s plans included cleaning up the side yard so he could take advantage of a shed special the Home Depot had.
I left the house around 8:45 am and got back around 1:00. As I pulled up to my house I noticed a chocolate lab in my neighbor’s yard.
Hmm, I wonder whose dog that is? I thought to myself.
Then I looked up at my house and saw the gate was open.
I looked back at the dog, “That’s my dog!”
I pulled over and rolled down my window to shout up at Hubby who stood in the yard grinning at me.
At this point, Delilah also saw me and ran up to the car, which is exactly when the grin left Hubby’s face as he realized Delilah was loose and I knew it.
The exact same thing happened a month or so ago when he got a new grill. My son-in-law came over to help unload the grill and they left the gate open. It was a nice day and I had the back door open and Delilah took advantage of it.
I went outside to discover Delilah monging on something in my neighbor’s yard (which I’m pretty sure she was doing on Saturday also.)
I was good, I kept my cool and simply said, “WE have to make sure the back door is closed when WE are leaving the gate open.”
His response, “The back door was closed.”
He just didn’t realize Delilah was already outside.

I’m with Lauren — good job on not losing your cool!! I’d have been p-o’d the rest of the afternoon, both times.

Once my little sheltie escaped the yard, as we were getting a new fence. I was so freaked all afternoon but it turns out she ended up at the neighbour’s house and they had fed her half of the roast dinner!! Although I almost had a heart attack that she was gone, it’s definitely one of my favourite stories of her! Hopefully Delilah doesn’t get out again!

Not cool, Dad. Not cool at all…

No one can do something as well as if you do it yourself. Mom is forced to trust others with us now and then and is always worried about such things happening. In some ways it is good that stuff happens and you moms see we survive, but I know it is really maddening for a mom as well. Husbands never seem to pay as much attention to pet detail. Glad nothing happened. Happy Memorial Day!

You’re a much better woman than me. I would not have kept my cool. I know this because when that’s happened here, I’ve totally lost it. Thankfully it doesn’t happen often (or I would be a widow!)

Sometimes a deep breath first, is the best course of action.

Sorry I had to laugh at this, I would be like your husband and it would be something I would do. Have a nice day.

I was working in dispatch (9-1-1) as a volunteer in the police department one time when a woman called to report a black Lab in her front yard. About ten minutes she called back to say it was her dog who had gotten out a side door.

A pedicure for BlogPaws? Are you going barefoot?
Kim - Life at Golden Pines says
I think our husbands are cut from the same cloth — Mine doesn’t understand why I get so upset, “she came back…” 😉

Some days, a deep breath and a pause (as proposed to paws outside the gate) is the better part of valor. Kudos for keeping your cool. Me, I’d be in orbit. 😉

You get bonus points for being “the good wife” and not totally freaking out or being mean. We applaud you, Jodi! 🙂

Hi Y’all!
‘Course my Humans don’t have to worry about a gate, ’cause I have no fence and I won’t stay outside unless someone is with me. My older sis, also a Chessie, Candy, did have a fenced yard, but she was just like me and wouldn’t stay outside by herself. The first thing my Humans taught her was to “wait”. When they opened the gates to take the tractor back to the tractor shed they just told her to wait and she’d lay in the shade, inside the gate, until they returned.
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
