I’ve come to the realization that I enjoy our morning walk more than our afternoon walk.
Yes, typically it’s warmer in the afternoon, but warmer/nicer weather usually means we encounter more people and dogs.
On our morning walks, we do have to contend with folks on their way to work and an occasional dog, but for the most part our walks are peaceful and quiet.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard to drag myself out of bed, and motivate myself to get moving.
There’s a lot to be done before we head out the door. The dog’s breakfast has to be set out to defrost, as does the fruit I use in my smoothie. The dogs need their collars and harnesses, I need to get dressed, get my treat and poop bags and grab my phone. (My camera and pepper blaster are usually in the pockets of my jacket.)
True confession. Poop bags are a pain in the ass for me. Pulling it out, yanking it off…(oh dear, this conversation just took a naughty turn, didn’t it?)
Hem, hem…back on track please. This past winter I started grabbing just one or two poop bags, loosening the opening and shoving them in a pocket. It’s much easier when the bag is ready to go, as opposed to standing out in the freezing cold with your nose running from the smell, and having to remove a glove to locate the opening of the bag, in order to pick up a steaming pile.
Luckily the new treat bag I bought has a little pocket in the front and I can shove a couple of bags in there for easy access. I typically load the treat bag for our afternoon walk and because there are limited distractions during the morning, the treats left over from the day before are more than enough.
Last Monday morning after a busy weekend, I rolled out of bed and got started on our routine. Hubby is up when we leave for our walk, but he has already left for work by the time we get back. I wished him a good day and headed out the door.
The dogs chose a route around the block and we had just passed a dog and I reached into my treat bag to reward them. My hands fumbled at my waist, and I gave myself a mental knock on the head, I’d forgotten the treat bag.
Then my eyes widened in dawning horror as I realized I also had no poop bags! I began to scour newspaper boxes in hopes of finding a baggie to fit my purpose.
I urged the dogs to move along, “Go, go, go” is the command I use and while I encouraged I was holding my breath as I quickly dialed Hubby’s number. Thankfully he hadn’t left yet so I gave him our location and told him we’d keep walking.
I rushing along the road, “Go, go, go” when Delilah decided to do just that.
So there I stood on the side of the road, waiting for Hubby to bring us a poop bag.
Truth…the thought did cross my mind to just leave it there, but I couldn’t, I mean it was on the lawn of someone who actually waves at me.
Have you ever forgotten an essential item on a walk? How did you manage it?

I usually stuff a plastic supermarket bag into my pocket for poop. I have occasionally forgotten, but since day1, Cupcake’s leash has a little zipper bag clipped to the handle. It has 2 extra poop bags, my $500 extra keyless entry car key, (for days we pick up the car from the garage on the way back), an antibacterial wipe, and a few extra treats. Forgetting happens…..

My dog’s have little poo bag holders on their leads, making it so simple to pick whilst on a walk. The only way I could ever be left on a walk without a bag, is if I forgot to refill an empty holder!!!

We have had poop bag shortages or not along with us, but it generally happens when the season changes and Mom forgets they need to be in her pocket as the jacket stays home, or in the winter when a few break because of the cold and we simply run out. It causes a panic for our mom too.

Oh no. Well it was early…lol.
I make the dogs go before the walk. I do bring bags, but if I forget it usually is not a big deal because they went at home.

Yup, I forgot the poop bags last week when hubby and I took Callie & Shadow to the park. I felt horrible about it, too! I didn’t even have any spares in the car. But, when I looked for some in the box at the park (each garbage can station also has a pole with a metal box for holding empty poop bags) the box was empty too! So, I stopped feeling guilty.
There was nothing I could do about it at that point anyway.

Yes, just the other night I forgot a poop bag. I did find a ziplock on the ground, and that worked good. So I picked up someone’s litter, and was able to get the poop picked up all at the same time.

We left the groomers one time and I didn’t think to bring poop bags……took two steps out the front door, and Mika pooped right on their front step! I think she was making a statement! hahaha

Last night, I used the last bag in our holder on the leash and forgot to refill it when we got home. This morning, I realized after we were already far down the road that I only had the one that I keep in the back of our treat pouch for emergencies. Some mornings are two bag mornings, so I was panicked that one wasn’t going to be enough, but we survived! Glad your hubby was able to come to the rescue!

There’s no worse feeling than realizing half a mile away from home the poop bag is waiting patiently on the kitchen counter right where it was left. Argh! I’m started tying a couple to the leash even though I try to carry one or two in a pocket. That way I’m covered (though a couple times I had to walk back and pick up after I came upon a handy neighborhood share-receptacle-thank you Jesus for those kind neighbors 3 blocks away). Every once in a while I forget to tie one on (I know, hard to believe) but fingers crossed, there’s one at the ready in the pocket. 🙂

I am proud of you, I will admit I would just leave it if that happened to me. I’m bad!

Pulling it out, yanking it off… this is why I need to come and play here more often!
OK time for a true confession. I struggle to open poo bags so much, that I have been known to have to revert to putting the edge of the poo bag in my mouth and using my lips to open it.

I’ve forgotten poopy bags and have gone back home to get one. I try to remember where the droppings are and pick it up. Sometimes I have poopy bags around when I don’t want them. They’re falling out of pockets when I don’t need them!

Yes, the old poop bag panic, when you realize you forgot to bring one along! I once saw a man walking his dog in front of our house when his lab decided it was time to poop in our yard. The man looked away, then hurried off without picking it up. I didn’t bother me too much since Haley occasionally poops in the front yard anyway. Twenty minutes later, the man returns alone with a bag to cleanup after his dog. How nice! 🙂

I’m pretty sure I forget something every time I head out for a walk! Usually it’s something I can live without (like my mace, so I’m good as long as we don’t encounter any whackos). Luckily my dogs prefer to poop in their own yard, but if I do forget bags, that’s the time they’ll decide to go on the walk.

Hmmm, I’ve seen someone trying to pick up poo with a leaf before. Not the best solution. If I forget the poopbag, I just keep the walk short so Donna doesn’t have a chance to poo until the next loo break/walk. 😛 #evilhuman But I don’t forget often!! 😀
