Tuesday night I was busy in the kitchen when a shadow in the backyard caught my eye. My faithful sidekick, Delilah the Velcro dog was with me, so I oh so casually made my way to the window to check it out.
It was a cat!
I contemplated opening the door and letting Delilah chase it off (I mean, this was the kitty that stalked us not too long ago,) then I thought about shooing it away myself, but I noticed the cat was inspecting the chipmunk holes and thought, maybe this is a good thing. I left the cat alone.
As discreetly as I could, (so as not to alert the D-Dog) I kept tabs on the cat. The cat inspected one area then another and finally I couldn’t see him anymore.
A short time later Hubby went outside to start the grill and the dogs and I went with him. Hubby and I were discussing which trees we wanted to cut down when all of a sudden Delilah made a mad rush in one area of the yard.
Shit she must have found the cat!
Sure enough, there was Delilah, fur up and Mr./Ms. Kitty all puffed up, high in the tree.
I brought the dogs inside and went back out. “Here kitty, kitty” I called.
“Meow” said the cat.
“Come down here kitty” I said, “The bad doggie has gone back inside the house.”
“Meow” said the cat.
“Can you bring the ladder up here?” I shouted to Hubby.
“I’m not climbing that tree.”
“Can you bring the ladder up here for me?” I asked.
“You’re not climbing that tree.”
“Why not?”
No response.
I contemplated the tree. Hell I can climb, it’s tall but not that tall. I even like climbing, I climbed to the top of the rope tower three years ago when I took my grandson to the dinosaur park hauling him up behind me. I eyed the tree again. Hubby stood there eyeing me.
Then Hubby walked away.
“Where are you going?” I asked Hubby.
“To get the ladder.”
Good man.
BUT the ladder wouldn’t reach the tree because there were smaller trees around it and they had too many branches, which impeded the ladder’s placement.
Maybe the next door neighbor would let us attempt a rescue from his yard? I marched over in my PJ’s and knocked on his door.
He wasn’t home.
I marched back home and grabbed a box of cat food and a small dish. I shook the box and added a small amount to the bowl, I set it in front of kitty on a stump and tried again.
“Here kitty, yum, yum,” I said.
“No thanks, I’m set here” said kitty, except to me it just sounded like, “Meow.”
Darkness fell. I checked a couple of times before I went to bed, shining a flashlight in the direction of the tree and each time, two little eyes peered out at me from the dark.
I felt horrible, but it looked like kitty had settled in for the night.
When I got up yesterday morning the first thing I did was check on kitty.
He/she was still there.
I felt bad, this is a young cat and here it spent the entire night stuck in a tree.
Then the crows started in. Those fucking crows, it reminded me of the time when poor little Bob was stuck in the tree.
I made a plan. If the cat was still in the tree when I came home at lunch, I would text my neighbor and ask him to help me rescue the cat after work. Or I would call animal control, or the fire department.
I guess the crows must have worked their magic because when I checked at lunch, kitty was gone.
So by now you must be wondering about the title of this post. Well to commemorate the event, I wrote a poem.

Delilah chased a cat up a tree
He was so afraid of her bite
He stayed there all night
Filling Delilah with glee

Your Mojo is playing hide-and-seek with you…this was cute. And I love the pic of D-Dog! Poor kitty, but any kitty looking to make “my” chipmunks its dinner would be chased up the tree by my Demon Dog. After all, this is her yard, not the kitty’s. 🙂

Hi Y’all!
Good for you Delilah! I get in trouble when I try to chase anything. Lucky you! Showed that cat didn’t you? Made it spend the night in the tree! BOL!
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog

Well done, D. Cats in dog territory are a bad idea. It’s a treeing waiting to happen. You only did what you had to do. I would’ve done the same thing, except I’m never off my leash and Mom is stronger than me….
Love and licks,
Cupcake

That last photo and caption are awesome! I’m sure the cat will get down eventually, and it probably will not return to your house for a long time, if ever!

Fantastic poem! My lab mix is afraid of cats, so he would be the one trying to escape. The neighborhood cats seem to know this. It’s a little embarrassing. 🙂

Jack says well done Delilah! He would have been filled with glee too!

If Delilah ever wants a partner in crime, tell her to give Haley a call, lol! I’m glad the kitty made it down on its own and we won’t be reading a post titled “Why I Fell Out of a Tree”. 🙂

First of all, why do you even have cat food in your house?! Second… poor kitty. Up a tree all night. Glad (s)he got down safely.
At least Delilah didn’t eat her.

Pawsome poem! I’m guessing the cat knew when the right time was to come down though I don’t know feline machinations very well. Glad there was a happy ending to the story and no broken bones were involved (which would be my luck because I apparently live by the “no good deed goes unpunished” mantra in life). 🙂

Delilah, what did that kitty ever do to you!
I bet the cat will stay out of your yard though. 🙂

That was such a fun post! Poor kitty, though. I guess he/she learned a valuable lesson – never EVER sneak around the yard of a cat-chasing dog or you’ll be booked into the Hardwood Hotel for the night. Love your poem – and that last photo of Delilah! 😀

Oh poor kitty. I guess she was worried that big bad Delilah might open the door and let herself into the yard if she attempted to come down…lol.
Years ago my sis had her kitty out on the yard on a leash. It was an indoor cat but they would take it out with them from time to time. Well this time something scared the cat and it got away and climbed a tree. It could not come down because, you guessed it, the leash got caught. They tried to get up there, but it was too high. The kitty was stuck over night. They called the fire department. They don’t rescue kitties. Finally they found a tree guy who came out on a Sunday with his cherry picker and rescued the kitty. The guy would not even take any money. Happy ending and no more outside time for kitty.
