There are some things a dog just knows.
Delilah for sure knows the time. She knows when it’s breakfast time, when it’s dinner time and when it’s snack time. And she lets you know that she knows.
Sampson knows when it’s walk time. He watches you closely, if you get up to sneak into the other room he usually gets up and follows you. If by chance you happen to sneak one past him and come out in your walking clothes, he jumps right off the couch.
Lately I’ve begun to think my dogs know when it’s just too cold to walk outside. We’ve had more snow and a couple of days with extreme cold where it was below zero. When you add in the wind chill factor, it’s even colder. There have been a couple of days, where I’ve dragged myself out of bed only to have both dogs stay in bed.
Ugh, nothing worse than being up when I don’t have to be.
I’m calling it the dog days of winter.
Welcome to Thursday’s Barks and Bytes hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and Heart Like a Dog. The Barks and Bytes hop is for anything at all and all bloggers are welcome. You don’t have to be a dog blog to join. For new blog hoppers, a blog hop is list of links that is shared on multiple blogs. In order to be fair to all participants Linda and I ask you to please use the linky list. If your blog does not support a linky list, please link back to either Linda or I.

LOL they know a good thing. I don’t blame them for staying in bed!
Hawk aka BrownDog says
Hi Y’all!
Been thinkin’ about y’all up there in the cold and wishin’ it warm for you. Unfortunately, according to the weatherman, wishin’ ain’t fixin’. 🙁
Y’all come on by,

We like to go for our walks no matter what. This morning it is -14, so our walk will only be about 20 mins, but we want to be out there. We do cut back on wanting to play in the yard, though. We are not totally off our dog beds! Time to go put on the shoes…grrr…since it is more than -10.
slimdoggy says
He looks so nice and cozy, I don’t blame him for not wanting to get up.
Daisy says
Daisy’s good like that – she stays in bed until we get up first. Sometimes she’s really lazy and doesn’t get up until we’re all dressed. But we can’t get away with anything once she’s up – she knows immediately that it’s walk time, especially once she sees our walking shoes make an appearance. 🙂
Mary says
LOL, I totally agree. These two for sure know the time, but Roxy also knows if it’s cold outside. She won’t budge.
Monika & Sam says
Nothing more aggravating than to go and find the dog back in your warm toasty bed looking at you like you’re a complete idiot with that ‘what the heck were YOU planning on doing’ look. Talk about humbling! And here you are just trying to be a good fur-mom. Stay warm with those two pooches; hoping spring is in your very near future (or at least more agreeable temps).
Gilligan says
Amen to that! My Papa’s been looking at me like he’s going to try to take me for a walk again today. I ain’t having it! *wags* – Gilligan from WagsAhoy.com

It was -3 actual temp. when we went out this AM… didn’t take us long to get BACK INSIDE though..
Dog Days of WINTER…. AKA… the LONG WINTER’S NAP time…
Jan K says
I don’t blame your dogs one bit! Since breakfast is first on the daily agenda, our crew never stays in bed (in fact, they usually try to wake Dad up early for it). They do, however, go back to bed afterwards. Cricket knows when there is fresh snow, and it’s the weekend, and on those days she stays up and wants to go right out to play.
We’ve finally got a break from the frigid temps the last couple of days, but we did get another 4 inches of snow last night, and it’s snowing again now. Snow, I can take, but below zero wind chills, forget it. Yes, even the dogs understood not going outside much for a couple of days.
Flea says
Those are some smart dogs! I’d still be in bed if it wasn’t for having to feed the chickens. And the fish. And the dogs. And me.
Blueberry's human says
I would make them go for a walk anyway – I’d be all, “HEY! I got up for this, so you’re going. Suck it up, dogs.”. And then the next day I would sleep in and not bother.
The trouble with Blueberry is, even during the hottest parts of summer, she STILL wants to go for a hike, however short it may end up being.
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
I like the way you think!! 🙂
Lauren Miller says
That’s so funny! My girls wouldn’t want to get up and go out in that either! I hope it warms up for you soon!
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
Thank goodness the girls let me sleep — or at least stay snuggled up under the covers — until about 8:30! Even Ducky has gotten good about staying quiet in her crate. The only time Callie and Shadow want to go out in the cold is when it’s a choice between that and soiling their beds. We’ve been having a cold snap these last few days (temps in low teens overnight, mid-20s rest of the day) and it’s aggravating Callie’s arthritis. I wish they made “cuddle duds” for dogs!!

My dogs don’t like to go out on any day that is below 40 degrees. They would prefer to hold it all in until it’s spring. Why, yes, we ARE wimps. Why do you ask?
Jen Gabbard says
Laika doesn’t seem to be that smart when it comes to the weather outside – until we’re actually out in it. This morning it was -9 and she was acting completely normal until we got halfway down the driveway and she just started whining. She didn’t move, just stood there and whined. We called it a nice brisk walk.
Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
I wouldn’t want to get out in the cold either, can I snuggle with you Sampson? Those pictures crack me up!
