When you have a dog like Delilah, holidays can be challenging. Because siriusly, any time you’re working with food, Delilah has to be there.
You know, just in case you drop a crumb.
We hosted Thanksgiving this year and I can’t tell you how many times I said, “Get out of the kitchen” on Thursday. After about the 10th time, I put her in the bedroom and put a gate across the door and finished my food preparations.
When everything was ready, I let her out again. Now the fun begins. Keeping her from stealing food off the table.
We had 11 people for dinner and the table only seats six, so we added a little card table. This means the food can’t all fit on the table, so we used the breakfast bar for the dinner food and as soon as dinner was over, we cleaned up the food and put it away.
But then came dessert. The dessert foods went out on the pool table which is a little bit taller than the breakfast bar or table. Did that stop Delilah?
Yes, yes she is THAT bold. And she did it right in front of me too.
I don’t know about you, but I want to get as much as possible out of my turkey. So as soon as everyone had packed up their goodies to take home, I put the turkey in the stock pot to start my turkey soup.
Remember last week when Jackie Bouchard asked, “So… how does she get stuff out of the sink?? Is she that tall? Does she jump up on the counter?”
There you have it Jackie, the stove is no higher than my sink. I swear this dog could walk on two legs. Truthfully I was more worried about her burning her paw, then her licking the pot but it didn’t seem to phase her.

I’m so glad my dogs are too short to steal food off the table! 😀
Beth | Daily Dog Tag says
As short as Theo is (very!) he still manages to get things off the counters and table. Although his legs are short, his back is longer giving him a little more height than I think he has. Since he lost weight, his jumping skills have improved. While I worried he would steal from the food table, he minded his manners. (Probably because we were in the same room.) Last year you all had some great prizes, I’m hoping to win one this year!

Luckily the counters and tables are out of reach here. Hope you had a lovely thanksgiving. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly

That Delilah. She is too much. 🙂

I counter surf, Bailie does too, but that darn cat bro is the absolute worst. We are having ten humans over for dinner next weekend and we have to lock him up or he will ruin everything! Maybe he and Delilah could get a place together and just eat and steal from each other for the rest of their lives. He loves dogs, so he wouldn’t be opposed to the idea.

She is so tall, I can see your dilemma.

Sounds awfully familiar. Mom stepped on me cause I was helping in the kitchen

You are made of strong stuff. I don’t know if by now I wouldn’t be tempted to let her at it first and just ‘make do’ with whatevers left! “Hello guests, welcome to my house. For tea tonight we have half a chicken which Delilah has previously licked and some potatoes she turned her nose up. I’m afraid she ate all the beans and carrots.”
Blueberry's human says
You know, as long as she can reach the upper kitchen areas so effortlessly, you could easily teach her to help you out with some of the food prep! Get her a little apron, maybe a chef’s hat…

Delilah looks like she has her own special turkey soup recipe.

I swear…..Leroy and Delilah were made from the same mold. What the hell is their deal? Leroy made several attempts to steal things from the table but we’re onto his games 🙂

Oh dang it, I can’t think of the dog’s name! Oh well, no time now to go check. Glad Delilah didn’t burn herself on the stove!!
jan says
btw, Is she wearing high heels?
Pamela | Something Wagging This Way Comes says
I wonder if chocolate Labs are particularly good at counter surfing. Honey’s friend Mr. Handsome is a chocolate and he’d compete with Delilah for surfing mischief.
BTW, thank you for reminding me to give Honey an extra big cookie for never grabbing food off the counter. 🙂

Luckily I don’t have counter surfers…but Jack is always underfooot in the kitchen.

We’ve been working with Luke on clicker training him to go to his bed when I’m working in the kitchen. It works some of the time. I try not to feel guilty about putting the dogs in another room when we have company for a meal (usually if it’s just a big group and I can’t keep an eye on them).
Luke licked a hot frying pan when he was a puppy….I’m not sure that it phased him at all!

Tall or short, dogs are like attorneys…they are always looking for loopholes to get what they want! But know that we’ve all been there with those Perry Mason-legal beagles and probably wouldn’t take them any other way, ok, maybe just less paw burning from a hot stove, but everything else the same. 🙂

This post reminds me my dog who left us last year.No matter how much tall he is,he used to simply jump on the table to eat whatever kept on it.

Love Delilah. She reminds me of Gman, always after the goods.

Oh I can sympathize with the super scavenger behavior. I’ve caught Laika on top of our counters on 4 separate occasions (she gets onto it from our bar stools). And the dummy just freezes when she’s caught because she’s scared to jump down. Having to life a 75 pound dog off my kitchen counter isn’t one of my favorite activities at 6am.
