Sampson and the Two Dicks

Sampson sees himself as the mayor of our neighborhood, in his mind it is his job to kiss as many babies and get as many pats on the head as he possibly can.  On our walks he’s always on patrol for the possibility of interacting with people.

You can tell when he’s seen someone.  His head comes up, his ears perk up and there is a bounce in his step.  As he gets closer, he gives the appropriate greeting.

“AHHHROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”  Most people respond to this with a wave or a smile, but when he is successful, they speak to him and then he gets to pull me over so they can pet him.  Of course, there are some people who resist his charms, but that doesn’t stop him, he tries again the next time he sees them.  Usually he can wear them down.

On one of our weekend walks we turned a corner only to find two older gentlemen standing in the middle of the road chatting. Siriusly, the middle of the road.  I thought WTF, this isn’t going to be fun as Sampson will want to pull me into the middle of the road.  Luckily a car came and the men had to choose a side.  I could still pull this off if they chose the opposite side from us.

No such luck,  they chose our side of the road and naturally Sampson had to meet them.

“AHHHROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” said Sampson.

“Well hello there” said one of the gentlemen. Then he said, “I’m Dick and this is Dick” pointing to the other man.  Well that’s easy enough to remember I thought.

Sampson of course, now that he’d been acknowledged stopped his antics and stood quietly in the road.

Which is how I found myself standing in the road talking to two dicks.

Wait.  WHAT?  You thought it was about something different?  Get your mind out of the gutter!  What kind of blog do you think this is?

Changing topics.

I’m sure most of you have heard by now that Leroy from My Brown Newfies is very ill.

He is in hospital right now with some kind of intestinal disease.  The exact disease is yet to be determined.  He needs to be scoped to discover what exactly he’s dealing with.  As you can imagine his vet bills will be quite high.  In order to help pay for Leroy’s veterinary care a Go Fund Me account will be set up within the next couple of days.   As soon as it’s set I’ll share it here and on my Facebook page and I hope you will do the same.

In the meantime please pray (if you’re a believer) and send lots of good thoughts Leroy and Jen’s way.

  1. Prayers for Leroy and Jen sent up. I didn’t know, so thanks for telling us. I will share the info as soon as I see it, too. My heart goes out to Jen. I hope Leroy will be okay!

    Callie & Shadow love people, too, except the neighbors I’ve told you about. Everyone else gets a full-body wag and lots of happy woofs. Ducky has her favorites but everyone else is hit-n-miss.

  3. That is quite an eye-catching title, lol. Sadie also always wants to go up and sniff everyone she sees. She loves it when people talk to her and gets annoyed if someone refuses to greet her. But if they actually bend down or try to touch her, she runs back to me. So basically most of the time she forces me into conversations with random strangers to explain why my dog seemed friendly but then got really shy all of a sudden.

    One seeing your title I thought you had had as productive a walk as I had the other evening when a ran into a ‘Dick’ (complete moron!!) Glad to hear they were nice Dicks.

We are so sad to hear about poor Leroy. We have a real nice newfie boy in our nose work class, kind of a goofball actually so we think of the Leroy and Sherman often.

  12. Your story is too funny!! In a town near us, friends of ours have a dog who everyone calls “The Mayor”. He trots up and down the streets like he owns them, does meet-and-greets with everyone, and he’s far more popular than any politicians. 😉

    I’m so sorry to hear about Leroy. We’re sending prayers his way and will watch for the Go Fund Me information.

  24. Sampson, you’re such a character. Maya likes to greet people too, but she doesn’t talk to them. She just the bouncy thing and smiles.

    But I have a mayor dog too. Yesterday Honey was thrilled when dozens (literally) of people came up to meet her and a few even wanted pictures of her.

    Thank goodness we don’t live in the same town or Sampson and Honey would fall all over themselves trying to entice the Dicks.

  26. *snort* Knowing you, our minds were all exactly where you wanted them to be! I’m laughing over the idea of Sampson as mayor because we have one with that sort of personality, too.

    I’m so excited to see that Jen is within $200 of making the goal! I have a feeling today will see them go all the way!
