You make me laugh (or smile.) The funny, sweet and loving things my dogs do every day that brings a smile to my face or a laugh to my lips.
Delilah, the fact that you understand me when I say, “Babe, there’s a chippie out there” makes me smile. The way you dart to the door and run like crazy to the place I pointed out to you, and enthusiastically try to catch that chipmunk….well that makes me laugh.
I saw a chipmunk go in here.
Delilah ran up the stairs, sniffed around and starting digging. Here’s what she discovered.
I’m not sure you can tell from the two photos, but the hole she discovered is in front of the rock you see in the first photo. She dug like crazy until she’d uncovered the hole. And then…..
She tried her darndest to find that Chippie, which made me laugh.
Your turn. Do your babies understand certain words when you talk to them? What are some of the words your dogs know that surprise you?
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
With my 3, the “magic” word is squirrel…especially for Ducky. She will patrol the base of a tree for a full five minutes at times, trying to see where the li’l varmint ran off to. Or, she will back away from the tree and look up into the branches, sniffing the air. She tickles me. Meanwhile, Callie and Shadow have long since given up on it and just find a place to settle down in the grass for a nap. We old ladies need our beauty sleep. 🙂
Molly The Wally says
Us too squirrel is the word in any context. Nothing like a bit of vermin hunting we say.
We hope you have a serene Sunday and go get yourself some big easy today.
Best wishes Molly

This is really crazy, but for some reason, known only to Josh, since he was a puppy, the words ‘chop-chop’ have him doing something pretty similar to what Delilah does. It wasn’t that I taught him those words, because I really didn’t, he just seems to know them, and he’s the only one that reacts to it — It makes us laugh every time–Maybe he lived with someone who was Asian in a previous life?! ;-)!

Sometimes I give Mom the dead stare but I understand perfectly when she says my favorite words like “treat” and “wanna come?” and “out”. That’s all I really need to understand.

We hear lots of words, but we really understand the important ones like squirrel, wabbit, critter. Mom rarely tries to fool us, so we know when she says it there is one and we go nuts looking for it. I sure wish we had chipmunks. I have to go visit Gramma or cousin Lena if I want any chance of seeing them. Nice work on finding that den entrance Delilah!
Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
oh yes they do understand certain words. I think you should of dumped a bucket of water down the hole for chippie to come running out. Have a wonderful Sunday, hope Sampson is coming along well.

Chipmunk….. We would be doing the SAME thingy… Digging and Digging to get to it.
Roxy the traveling dog says
Just the usual, eat, go, walk, stuff like that.

Rita always makes us laugh at night when we’ll be watching TV and one of us will say to the other (in our ‘normal’ voice, as opposed to the ‘dog’ voice), “want to watch something else or go to bed?” She can seem to be sound asleep, but when she hears the word BED she leaps up and runs out back to check the perimeter one last time. Same thing when she hares the sound of the TV clicking off.

I babble…er talk to my dogs all the time and I’m constantly amazed at how many words they understand. I have read that dogs can understand 200-300 words, mostly nouns and verbs. Not many adverbs or prepositions though.

Too cute! When Kenzie is acting like a little maniac I ask her, “do you want to go to bed?” and she settles right down 🙂 Smart little pup!

Hi Y’all!
It isn’t just words I understand…I know from certain expressions that I’d better “shut up” and I usually do.
Y’all come by tomorrow, we have an Award (2) for y’all.
Y’all hurry by now!

We used to say “squirrel” and Kobi and Maggie would go nuts, barking and running to look out the window! We’d let them out and they’d go running right over to the fence where the bird feeders hang just outside. We never taught it to the dogs that came after them, because we didn’t want four dogs going nuts when we accidentally said it!

Mity understands the word walk, and if it is uttered he will go and hide under the table – he does not like walks for some reason! Unless BD is there, in which case they race each other to the door! Always makes me laugh

Good find Delilah!
Animalcouriers says
That must have led to a very muddy pup – can you see the mud on Delilah?!
Donna O. says
That IS cute…although maybe not so much for the Chippie. 🙂
My dogs definitely understand a lot of words that I haven’t taught them. The best is how when Toby tries to get me up in the morning and I say “ten minutes” he goes and lies back down for bit. And while it’s not ten minutes on the nose, he does come back after a few, be it five or fifteen, so he has become my morning snooze button.
It also works when he’s pestering me for dinner.
