I’ve been searching for a new dog beg for quite some time. It’s not like we don’t have dog beds, we have one in practically every room of our house. The one I like the best is also the one we’ve had the longest and it’s also the one that’s the worse for wear.
We got this bed for Sampson when he was about a year old, it’s huge. One side is fleece and the other is not. (Don’t ask me, I don’t know what kind of material it is!)
Sampson doesn’t care much for the fleece side, so the other side is the one that gets all the scratching and pulling in attempts to get it comfy. Last year I patched the holes by sewing some material inside it, but it didn’t last.
Slowly but surely the holes have gotten bigger and thanks to the Giant Ass Clown the stuffing gets pulled out. Since I couldn’t find a dog bed that I was thrilled with, I decided to repair the bed again.
I started out with some green quilted material that I had left over from another project. I wasn’t thrilled with the color, but it’s what I had so I went with it.
I washed the covering of the bed and turned it inside out, pinning the the green material as close to the edges as I could get it. This proved to be somewhat challenging as the edges are trimmed with a heavy cord, but by removing the footer and maneuvering the material I managed.
Once that was completed, I cut a square out of the center of the bed, removing the holey parts. And using a binding stitch, I sewed the around the square.
And then I re-stuffed it and brought it into the bedroom.
Of course my little shadow was right behind me so I asked her to pose on the refurbished bed.
Clearly she finds it beneath her.
Have you ever had a great bed, that your pets loved that you had to repair? Or did you just break down and buy a new one?

The right bed is important! I love my memory foam. When my bed gets old and torn, I hope my pawrent will patch it like you did! @chouchoubriard
Vlad & Barkly's Dee says
What I wish you’d tell me is, how do you get a dog to use a bed? Barkly uses his for when he’s having his nightly chew, and that’s it. Vlad only gets on one when forced to by command and as soon as you turn your back, he’s off of there. Stay doesn’t work. Even when they were still being crated while young, they’d scratch their crate beds aside and lay on the plastic. Rugs? They’re not okay to lay on either. The hardwood and the stone entryway are the only places that are okay to lay on according to them. They’re gated out of the bedrooms b/c of my allergies, but they refuse to get on the sofa or chairs either. I’m worried about their joints as they age, but so far beds, rugs and furniture are taboo for some odd reason that I can’t fathom.

Hey, that looks like a rather good mend but of course the proof will be in the mauling. Hope it lasts well.

That is a great idea to patch up instead of buy new. We have beds in nearly every room to but likewise we have our favourite. Sorry if we missed a post or two as they would not open up recently but all is OK today. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly

See just add a dog and suddenly anything looks ok!!

Mom makes covers for our flat beds, but Bailie and I like cozy beds with sides. When they start wearing out, we have to toss them and buy new as they are too hard to “remake”. One thing is for sure, new beds are never as nice as the old broken in ones.
2 brown dawgs says
Good job! We just buy new. I do try to find beds with removable covers that I can wash. 🙂

I hate sewing so I never fix anything. Sometimes I will wrap an old quilt around a bed and use it like that for a while.
We have one old bed that I hate, it’s so hard to keep clean. But the dogs and cats all love it so we keep it.
Yeah, ours don’t sleep on dog beds in the bedroom either….they’re all on the bed with us. Occasionally, Sheba will move to the floor if she’s hot. It’s going to be rough if Luke gets as big as we think he’s going to! 🙂
Sherri says
Great repair job! Lightning had one bed that he really loved….he had it as a puppy and even after he outgrew it, he would still sleep in it. Then it got destroyed in a major poop event. I replaced it with a new bed that both dogs now compete for. Thank God it’s completely washable, and so far Thumper hasn’t unstuffed it. He and your Giant Ass Clown have alot in common. 😉
Amber DaWeenie says
Oh Mommie crocheted us two nice doggie beds. BUTT we have our special sleep numbers too on the BIG bed. Mom and Dad can use the doggie beds! 🙂
Frankie and Ernie says
WE think that is a SUPER REPAIR Job. We even LIKE the color. WELL DONE.
Maggie says
We’re the same way… dog beds in every room of the house! There are a couple that are clearly the favorites and those show the wear. I need to restuff and repair two of the beds, but what I did for the time being is I stacked them on top of each other and wrapped them in a blanket. It’s working for now, but your post has perhaps given me the push I needed to tackle the repairs!
Roxy the traveling dog says
I haven’t gone through that with a bed, stuffed dog toys though. Torrey was terrible on stuffies when she was a pup.
Jenna,Mark “HuskyCrazed” Drady says
Good for you for repairing it! haha! No my dogs will not sleep on a dog bed! I have 3 of them, and they just prefer the couch…my bed…or the carpet in front of my front door! Not sure why though!

Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
OMD!! Can I ever relate to the stuffing being pulled out of the dog bed!!
Callie’s bed has been in the same place in the living room since she was six months old, with the same cover (hunting dog motif on green background), ever since it arrived from the LL Bean store nine years ago. And until Ducky joined the family, it was in almost-brand-new condition. Now it has three different holes created by Ducky teeth, and some of the stuffing is gone, too. But Callie still loves her bed. She likes to scratch at it and “knead” it until it’s just right. So, I just leave it alone. Ducky hasn’t bothered it at all the last few months…I guess she’s found better-tasting things to chew on, like the Wubbas. I had to replace the zipper on Shadow’s bed because she pulled it apart one day when she and Callie were playing. Ducky sleeps on just about anything, she doesn’t care what it is. 🙂

Yes, I do have dog beds and no, they never wear out because no dog has ever used them. They prefer couches, chairs, and the bed. I still keep them tucked in corners in case jumping becomes a problem. How do you get a dog to use a dog bed?

My guys have their beds forever…they dont dig to get comfy…must be a lab thing, because toby is always doing that…they do have beds they just love now from marthastuart, but they dont come with a cover…so i had to buy a cover which was the same price as a new bed. Lol
Blueberry's human says
Blueberry’s favorite bed is my bed. 🙂
I once spent a couple of months cutting out and hand sewing two large dog beds for my last two dogs. Copper peed on his (apparently that was his way of showing his appreciation for my hard work) and Shadow gutted hers because she mistakenly thought it was a giant stuffed animal that had to be killed. That ended my brief foray into the world of sewing.
Genevieve says
I don’t do repairs. I can barely sew on a button. New beds are a crap shoot. I’ve won some and I’ve lost some.
slimdoggy says
Well, for whatever reasons, my dogs have never been big bed scratchers…none of them. Jack does a little, but not enough to wreck it. So beds usually get tossed for other reasons.
Neil says
It seems that dogs are in some way just like us. They also tend to have some sort of sentimental value over things that they have grown up with for a long time. However, my pet just seem to sit anywhere slightly elevated and at the same time cushion-like. 🙂

I used to make new covers for Cali’s beds – we had beds in every room too! We’re crazy, aren’t we? MacKenzie has outgrown her tiny bed 🙁 but we are so leery of buying her a bigger one . . she just wants to bite it and beat it up before she finally settles down and they are so dang expensive! Right now she is suffering along with one of Cali’s old beds 🙂 Nice repair job!!
Dawn says
I used to get dog beds cheap, so I’d throw them out rather than wash or repair them. But I got these great big beds and do not want to throw them away. No holes yet. But I think it is getting close to that time. I like what you did there with that bed and will probably do the same.
Jackie Bouchard says
Nice repair job! I haven’t had to repair one of Rita’s beds yet (she has two) but I’ll probably have to eventually because this annoying habit of scratching like crazy before laying down. Her ridiculously pricy Orvis bed is starting to wear thin!
Jackie Bouchard says
Dang… this is the 2nd time lately that I’ve tried to leave a comment and lost it and had to redo it. Weird.
Nice repair job. I haven’t had to repair one of Rita’s 2 beds yet, but I’ll have to eventually since she is a bed scratcher. Oy. She’s ruining her pricy Orvis bed!
Jen K says
That’s a pretty good repair job if you ask me!
Not many dog beds in our house – they prefer the cool tile.
Sue says
You have my sympathy. Right now on my to-do list: make new covers for 2 dog beds. We’ve got dog beds all over the house, but these two are the oldest, memory foam, and the favorites. Thought about replacing them, but just don’t want to spend the $$. Now, to find the time to do this… 🙁
Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
You crafty girl you. My dogs had a bed just like that one and a blue and tan one, I had them for the longest time. They and I loved them. Glad you could fix it. You did a fabulous job.
Donna says
Great job Jodi…and it reminds me of a repair I once did on a soft crate. Toby had dug a trench through the bottom, also trying to get comfy, so I cut a plastic table cloth and glued it to the underside to patch it…and it held up well. Looked ghetto when I took him to dog shows, but hey, I wasn’t about to shell out another hundred bucks for a soft crate. LOL!
