As you know Sampson had surgery last week to remove a Sebaceous Cyst and a fatty tumor. The Vet sent him home with a C.O.N.E.
You know, one of those horrible plastic collars that keep dogs from scratching or digging at something they shouldn’t. Most dog folks refer to it as The Cone of Shame. Why, I don’t know. Is it because most times the dog has done something (s)he shouldn’t have which resulted in an unexpected trip to the Vet?
It breaks my heart to see him in the cone, so as soon as we got in the car, we took it off. As long as we are home to monitor him, he doesn’t need to wear it.
BUT when I leave for work in the morning, I have to put the cone on. I feel like such a schmuck when I put it on him, even though I know it’s for his own good.
I called the Vet to check and they said he has to stay in the cone when we can’t keep an eye on him and he has to stay in it until he has his stitches out, which is Friday!
Friday!
So every morning, just before I leave for work, I put the cone on. I’m quickly learning that not only do I have a Diva in the house, I also have a Drama King.
I’m not sure if cones are supposed to be THIS BIG, but it seemed HUGE on him. And really we only want to prevent him from rubbing the side of his face, so we decided to cut the cone down.
Hubby drew a line and I cut just above it.
We decided that I needn’t cut it any shorter than this, so you can still see the black line.
Cutting the cone down didn’t make him feel any better about wearing it.
And when that didn’t work, he got really desperate.
Hang in there buddy, Friday’s coming!
Has your puppy had to wear a cone? How did you deal? Did you get the drama too?

Oh man! THAT is a SAAAAD face! But don’t let it get to you. Once my old dog, Smoki took out her own stitches when we gave her a “break” from the cone. She had to go back and get the site stapled! Yikes.
Roxy the traveling dog says
That really did look huge before you trimmed it down. She really does have the sad face going there..LOL..i hope she gets better fast.

We believe that the term CONE OF SHAME came from an animated Movie…
OH POOR GUY…. We have Both had to suffer the Cone of Shame and it is TERRIBLE. Some of them actually COME with Cut off HERE lines on them… butt it is STILL not fun. HURRY FRIDAY… HURRY.

Oh, I feel for Sampson. I hate the Cone of Shame. When Ma had to put it on me, I gave her the same look. I also will NOT move with it on…not one inch, which makes Ma feel terrible. Friday cannot come soon enough!

Poor Sampson! Callie understands all too well how he feels — and she gives me the same looks whenever she has to wear the thing! But I never really thought of it as a “cone of shame”. I just thought of it as a pain in the you-know-where. The darn thing is so big that poor Callie can’t get the food out of her bowl with it around her neck. And we usually have to help her maneuver around corners in the house. Luckily, none of my three have had to wear the cursed thing in a while…since October.
Hang in there, Sampson! Friday will be here before you know it. 🙂

Poor Sampson . .they are so good at flashing those sad puppy eyes! Friday will be here before you know it buddy!!

I’m testing from my computer at work to see if this goes through! In case it is my computer that is the problem.

The cone is the worst. We haven’t had to put Rita in it (yet – it’s inevitable though, isn’t it??), but we had to put both Bailey & Abby in and it was that same ‘tortured puppy’ look.
And, yeah “cone of shame” is from Up. You’ve seen Up, no?? Rita watched it with me. She enjoyed it. 🙂
Dawn says
Poor Sampson looks so sad. 🙁 I think we call it the cone of shame because dogs seem really ashamed of themselves when they have to wear it.
jan says
We call it an Elizabethan collar. There should be no shame in wearing one.
Chamois our Generic Dog had to wear one when she tore a dewclaw and had to have it removed. The first night she was able to chew through the bandages and chew off the stitches. We had to return for restitching and a larger size.

When I got spayed they gave me a cone but Mom didn’t have the heart to put it on me, so I learned the “no lick” command and it works great. I would say it is my best command. Katie has had to don one several times and it breaks Mom’s heart but she refuses to learn the “no lick” command so she gets the cone. Talk about sad abused dog face to go with the cone too! Don’t know why I obey that silly command but I always stop as soon as she tells me and I don’t do it anymore. Weird but thankful no cone here.

Oh dear, such a sad pitiful face…
Jack had eye surgery last year and they insisted on one of those. Luckily I work from home, so we were able to go without shortly. Poor Samson.
2 brown dawgs says
Poor Sampson. It was probably so large because his neck is big. You want the cone a little longer than the dog’s nose. Otherwise, they can bend around to get to their incision. The larger the dog and their neck, the longer the cone.
It is referred to as “cone of shame” because of doggies do not like them and feel ashamed or embarrassed to have to wear them. 🙂 Thunder had to wear one for a long time after his bloat surgery. He also was crated with it. It was cumbersome, but had to be. Then he wore it again when he had that cast on last year. Poor dog is used to the cone. Storm flat out refused to wear the thing after her spay surgery. Luckily she did not bother her incision. Go figure that she would be the one to leave things alone.
Jan K says
Oh, poor baby! We’ve had to use a cone from time to time and we definitely get the drama. It’s so difficult to leave it on when they look at you like that!
Pup Fan says
Aw, poor baby!
Bella is a total cone hater. We got her the Comfy Cone and she was marginally less grouchy than when she had the plastic one, but not by much…
Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
Awe cutie you still look handsome. Heal up buddy and you can loose the cone. Hugs
Jessica says
Poor Sampson! I’m glad he’ll wear it at all, though. Silas had a full on meltdown when I tried to use his after his neutering. I’m talking blind panic. Fortunately, he didn’t bother his incision too much and I was around to watch him.
Blueberry's human says
I never made my dogs wear a cone. I would put socks on or a t-shirt but never the cone. I probably hate that thing more than any dog anywhere. They should really have come up with a better alternative by now. Sorry…I have some pretty strong feelings about the cone. I don’t know why – it’s not like I have ever had to wear one. 😉
I had to watch a foster dog for a weekend once and he had the cone – I only allowed it because he wasn’t my dog and I didn’t want the rescue people to get mad at me. But it was tough watching him try to navigate his way through the house and backyard with that thing.
Pamela | Something Wagging This Way Comes says
Honey was coned when she had her squeakyectomy. She didn’t like it any more than Sampson.
Glad that at least you can give him a break when you’re home to watch him. Any chance your job would let you take medical leave? 🙂
