Last week I was super excited to receive a box of goodies from Hill’s. Now typically you wouldn’t find a post about Hiill’s on my blog, as we are raw feeders and truthfully I’m not a big fan of Hill’s. MIND, I’m not knocking you if you feed Hill’s, I promise. If it works for you and your dog, great!
Check out the goodies in this box, 1-bag Kibble, 6-cans wet food, 1-doggie food bowl, 1-doggie blanket, 1-bag baked treats. (This box of goodies I won in a give-away on Hound Girl.)
Full disclosure: I checked out the baked treats and decided that I could use those, so I kept them (in small amounts) for Sampson and Delilah.
So I’m sure you’re wondering just why I got all excited about the package, well even though I don’t feed Hill’s I know there are rescues and shelters that are always looking for donations. And I was super excited to be able to donate my winnings to a local rescue in my area. As I was scoping the box out I remembered I also won some dog food from Keep the Tail Wagging and that should be coming in the next month or so!
This got me thinking, how important it is for animal lovers to follow bloggers, whether they blog or not.
Because Bloggers work with sponsors and a lot of Bloggers have contests and product giveaways! Granted it may not be something that you can use for yourself or your pet, but food, toys, beds, etc can be donated to shelters or rescues in need.
Heck, even other items can be donated to shelters and rescues for the purposes of raffles, tag sales or auctions. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
Like right now, a number of my fellow bloggers are doing a Zuke’s giveaway. I mean Zuke’s is awesome but if for some reason your pet doesn’t eat/like Zuke’s why not enter to win anyway. Treats make great Christmas gifts for the pet lover in your life and if you don’t have anyone to give them to, you could donate them to your local shelter and help dogs like this gal, who is currently looking for her forever home.
All her information can be found in the link under her picture.

Great point as shelters will take any donations going.

We agree donating to rescues and shelters is just pawsome. Have a terrific Tuesday.

I agree! I also won a Hill’s prize package, and it is being donated to the shelter we adopted Faolan from.

anytime we win something we can’t eat because of our allergies – we donate it to our local human society.

Shelters are so appreciative of any support you can give them! I hope that sweet girl gets adopted soon! (Or if she’s lost, her family finds her.)
Donna says
Great idea Jodi, and what better time of year to share stuff with your local shelter?

It’s funny, I was just telling a friend of mine this same thing earlier today, before reading this! She reads my blog of course, but I told her she should really be reading other blogs too, because of the great giveaways! It never occurred to me though that I could enter for things to give as gifts or to give to shelters. I won two of those Hill’s gift packs and though we kept all the canned food, I am giving away the rest of the second pack to family, friends, and someone collecting things for their shelter.

Like you, as raw feeders, there are a lot of things we just can’t force ourselves to give our dogs. It goes completely against why we feed raw in the first place. I caught on to the giveaway donating a few months ago. I might not use something, but it’s not going to stop any of the 5 local no-kills, that we support, from liking it.
I also look out for gift-card giveaways to places that I know have dog supplies. Those are greatly appreciated, but I generally don’t find those cards on dog blogs. So I follow a lot of human blogs as well. I might be limited to how much of our own money I can donate every month, but I’m not limited on what I can win for the shelters.
Then there are some things, especially non-food items, that are just TOO nice to donate. I’m overly appreciative of it all, though I don’t keep some of it.

So true I’ve learned so much from other bloggers and it helps the community of dog lovers and cat lovers that we all belong too

We’ve given lots to our local shelters from goodies and food/treats I don’t use/eat. It’s a PAWsome way to help out. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

Oh, that’s a great point. 97% of giveaways aren’t anything we can use, thanks to the food allergies. I hadn’t thought about winning and donating.

If I win something, even if I keep it myself, I try to make a donation to our local shelter. I figure its some treats or food I don’t have to by myself, so why not make a donation? 🙂 I also know a volunteer at a local rescue and if we try a food that doesn’t work for our dogs, they will take it from us even if the bag is open. Not all will, but as I said, I know a volunteer who will find a use for it.

It is so kind of you to give them to dogs in need. Lee and Phod

What an excellent idea. We should all promote that!

What a great point! I don’t often enter giveaways because I don’t have a US shipping address, but I bet I could sent things elsewhere (depending on the terms of the giveaway). I had never thought of it that way!

That’s a great point Jodi. As a blogger myself, I often donate food, toys, etc that I have gotten to rescues. When I run a contest I usually remind readers that even if they don’t want the product, they can enter and donate their winnings to a shelter.

She is so lovely!!

We do the same. We win things and if they aren’t something we need, then we donate to the shelter we like in our area. Thanks for posting that.
Dogs N Pawz says
Great post! We donate if we win something that we don’t need and we also donate part of our Amazon profits each month when we have some. They aren’t much but every little bit helps. She reminds me of Phe and it breaks my heart. Sharing.
Sue at Talking Dogs says
I love this idea and I’ve done it – won prizes and passed them along to a shelter or rescue. Definitely a win win 🙂

Winning stuff from other bloggers is great! Not only do we get to win prizes, but we get opinions on and a chance to try out products we might have been reluctant to consider before. Gift giving or donation is a great idea for if you get a product that isn’t right for your own needs.

I always enter giveaways and have won quite a bit of food and treats to donate to our local SPCA. They always need soft food for kibble enrichment and giving meds. I love being able to give them high quality food instead of what I could afford on my own.
Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
You are so right and what a great idea. The shelters can always use stuff not only food.
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
You make a great point, Jodi! My problem is I barely have time to read other blogs lately let alone enter giveaway contests. I do, however, try to get a case or two of good quality canned food up to shelter twice a year.
Maverick says
Very good point-seems like an easy way for more people to help with gathering more donations. Shelters can put a lot of stuff to use that we might not normally think about beyond food to towels, old kennels, toys, etc.
