Sampson and Delilah are fed a raw diet. To help keep their tummies full I give them a scoop of pumpkin every morning. I also use it to frost their treat bones. Typically we go through a large can of pumpkin about every 5 or 6 days.
I don’t know how much pumpkin is where you live, but here in CT the large can of plain pumpkin is close to $4. Luckily for me, the local warehouses carry the large cans of pumpkin in a three pack, which saves me over a dollar a can.
The bad news is the pumpkin is only in the warehouses at this time of year. So I’ve been buying a case (or two) every weekend.
I have a crap-load of pumpkin.
Don’t believe me? Take a look.
I knew when I went looking for a recipe for today’s Tasty Tuesday, I wanted to use pumpkin, but I also wanted to use some coconut flour because it’s just so darn tasty!
I searched and searched, but I had trouble finding a decent recipe. I finally found one that called for two cups of oatmeal and 8 ounces of baby food. I decided it was something I could work with. Here’s where it gets impressive.
I invented my own recipe!! Someone pick Jodi Chick up off the floor please.
Here’s what I used.
1 cup quick cooking oats 1/2 cup oat flour 1/4 cup coconut flour 1/4 cup shredded coconut 1/2 cup canned pumpkin 2 eggsIn a medium-sized bowl, mix the dry ingredients together just to incorporate them. Then add the eggs and pumpkin, bring your muscles cause this dough is stiff.
Once it was mixed together, I just took small handfuls and formed balls with my hands, pressing them down onto a baking stone.
Bake in a pre-heated 350° oven. Mine took about 22 minutes, but yours could take a little less or a little longer.
Cool and store.
So let’s see how the dogs liked the cookies.
Hey Sampson, how did you like the cookies I made for you last night?
Nom, nom Mama, this cookie is pawsome!!
Delilah, what did you think of the cookies that The Mama made last night?
IN…….HALE. Cookie? What Cookie? Did you give me a cookie? If you did, I didn’t taste it. You may want to give me another a cookie, just to try it like.
I’d say that’s a four paw rating.
So you know my rule right? It has to be a treat that I can make that I will be able to eat as well. Since there is no sugar involved, it’s not a sweet treat. Here’s what I did.
I added a few M&M’s and a small amount of chopped walnuts to the tops of each cookie. Still a little on the bland side, but not too bad. I think this is a recipe I can play with and find the right combination, that will satisfy both the dogs and the humans in our house.
I can’t believe I’m actually typing this right now, but what I love about baking for my dogs is I know exactly what ingredients, as well as the quality of the ingredients in their treats.
Besides, my dogs love them and that makes me happy. Have you tried baking for your pups yet? If you haven’t, what’s stopping you?
Roxy the traveling dog says
I haven’t baked for the dogs, I need to…..someday. LOL I barely bake or cook for us.
emma says
There is a baking girl in you after all! They look great…Mom wants those M&M’s! Do you have Aldi in your area? Mom bought some all natural pumpkin in a can (15oz) yesterday for 89 cents. You could stock up there.
SlimDoggy says
Wow, I”m impressed with your baking skills. Not only baking, but making up the recipe! Way more work than I can do. I like your thought process though – if you’re gonna bake for the dogs, let it be something you can eat too – great idea.
Jen K says
Everything you make looks so good I want to eat it and not share with the dogs!
I’m very inspired by your recipes because I am not much of a cook at all, but I do enjoy baking a lot (I just don’t do it very often).
And yes, that’s definitely a crap-load! (Is that a metric measurement?)
Carol Bondy says
I love baking for them also…you can throw a little honey in there to sweeten and also cocnut oil will loosen it a little…good for their coats..never thought of throwing coconut i. There…did you use the unsweetened one???
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
Wait while I go help Jodi Chick recover from her dead faint! 🙂
I am impressed, Miss Jodi!! I’m going to have to try that recipe! But I think I’ll roll it out and use the bone- and paw-shaped cookie cutters. Maybe I’ll make a double batch and take them with me on Thursday morning when I bring Ducky to daycare for the Halloween party. That way I’ll know her treats will be healthy.
Now I have to add the coconut flour and shredded coconut to my shopping list…I wonder if Publix will have it? Then I have to see if I can find a way to figure out the calorie count…all 3 girls are on weight maintenance “diets”. (A GIANT thank you to SlimDoggy for the widget and the app — both are a godsend in helping me monitor the girls’ daily calorie counts.)
Two French Bulldogs says
Does punkin make you guys poopy more? Mom was hesitant to give it to me for that reason

jan says
Yes, I was also wondering if the poopy factor is changed with pumpkin. There are a lot of them around this time of year and it might be a good time to try it. Do you ever start with fresh pumpkins?
Molly The Wally says
OMD that is some pumpkin mountain. The cookies look well yummy. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly
Julie says
Hmm, I wonder how applesauce and banana would work for sweetness? They look pretty tasty with the mini m&m’s 🙂
Frankie and Ernie says
They look FANGtastic to US…. WE love ALL thingys Pumpkin on our hill.
Jessica says
Awesome!
I’m the lady who’s buying a turkey every trip to the grocery store, so I can’t blame you. (If I get a sub 10lb turkey, Silas can eat it all except the breast bone. Even at Whole Foods, a whole turkey is under $4/lb, It’s a great deal for the more expensive cuts, like turkey breast for the dehydrator, and going rate for everything else.) I also need to buy an entire year worth of organic turkey liver and giblets once I can find it. Can you imagine the look I’m going to get?
Genevieve says
Mom doesn’t even bake for herself. She always wants other people to bake for her and just give her the goodies. At least she takes 5 minutes every now and then to make me some frozen treats.
Love and licks,
Cupcake
Doggy's Style says
I love Doggy, but if someone is enjoying that precious canned good it’ll be me.
Earl Lover says
Absolutely ACE ACE ACE pumpkin biscuits! NEED TO MAKE THEM FOR EARL!
Kirby the Dorkie says
Good job! We stock up on pumpkin here too for Kirby’s meals and treats!
houndstooth says
I love to bake for the dogs when I have time! The Three Dog Bakery Cookbook is some of the best money I ever spent. I’m not great at inventing recipes, but I will dabble every once in a while.
I’m going to send out a search party now to b sure Jodi doesn’t have some kind of concussion or something!
Maggie says
Wow! I’ve never made up a new recipe! I do like to bake for my guys, and they love pumpkin… I think your recipe is going on my weekend to-do list!
Urban hounds says

Oz the Terrier says
Oh Miss Jodi, what’s stopping us?! The fact that my Ma does NOT bake ever. I wish I had someone to bake for me. I show Ma all these great recipes but she still will not brave the baking. *sigh*

With all the recalls and such, I love to bake for the dogs. I even made them some meatballs last weekend! I still don’t do it as often as I like, but I will probably have more time over the winter. I’m collecting recipes for when I do…and these look great! If I don’t have time to bake, sometimes I just throw some yogurt and fruit or pumpkin together, and they love that too.
BTW, I think it’s very impressive you made up your own recipe! I used to follow recipes to the letter, but now I often get creative with them, and it’s fun!
Pam | Words With Wieners says
I *still* haven’t baked for my dogs. I pin all these great recipes, and never make them! I’m so bad. I just pinned this recipe… will I make it? We’ll see.
Gizmo (@GizmoGeodog) says
Love this Jodi…When I fed raw back in the 1990’s I added a dollop of pumpkin every day and used to go through the same seasonal pumpkin problem…and yes, I would have similar stacks of cans tucked away hoping they’d last through the year…The recipe sounds interesting…I really have to try coconut flour one of these days…
2 brown dawgs says
Wow good job! What an excellent recipe and the dogs look like they loved them. Delilah cracks me up! Brown dawgs have treat envy. I am not baking for them…lol.
Rebekah says
Amen to quality control, and knowing whats in the treats. I also feed raw, and keep pumpkin on hand if a dog appears to have digestive upset. Fortunately I haven’t needed it for several months.
Sue at Talking Dogs says
Those sound great! Sampson and Delilah certainly loved them. We’ve baked for our dogs for years now (not bragging, just a fact) and though we review a lot of treats, the dogs prefer homemade 🙂
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
My first batch is in the oven right now. We’ll see how they turn out. Stay tuned.
Sherri says
Lol! That recipe looks good. Brown sugar would probably be a good sweetener if you want to make a sweet treat. I laughed at loud at the pumpkin picture. That’s alot of pumpkin. 🙂
Donna says
I was gonna say they looked good enough for US to eat….and then I finished reading. LOL! (personally I prefer reeses pieces)
Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
Holy pumpkin batman. I would stock up too, pumpkin is pricey here but I don’t think it is that much. How cool of you to make up a new recipe. It looks yummy. I never heard of or had coconut flour.
Ruckus the Eskie says
AMAZING stash of pumpkin you have there!
