Her brown eyes stared out at me from her photo on Petfinder, wide with uncertainty. Eyes who will haunt my dreams for a long time to come.
Her story was sad. Life at the end of a three foot chain tied to a tree. Very little food or water, wallowing in her own feces, covered with ticks and fleas. One of three dogs removed from an animal cruelty case, and up for adoption.
At the Hartford dog pound dogs get 10 days before they can be euthanized. The pound will hold them longer if there is someone willing to take them. They post them on Petfinder with their legal date for adoption. Hers said, “NOW, URGENT.”
I shared her on facebook and asked people to share her.
Today she was gone.
I don’t know, Leslie pointed out that maybe it’s a good thing, maybe she made it out and I pray to God that she did, but my heart is heavy right now and my tears are falling fast and hot down my cheeks.
Poor sweet baby, just needed a chance.
There’s one more at the Hartford pound, his legal day is tomorrow. (Which means if he isn’t adopted out, he can be euthanized.)
The adoption fee is $50 for residents and $5 for non-residents. I will help you find transport, if you aren’t in CT.
Here is what Petfinder has to say about this guy:
“It doesn’t get goofier then him. Super sweet and super friendly. Affectionate. Playful and very animated. Great with dogs he met..big and small, Loves to be close and thinks he should be a lap dog. Great on leash and great when you drop the leash. Eager to please and very smart!!”
Contact information to adopt this guy can be found here.
Who knows, maybe she got the chance she deserved, and maybe she didn’t. One thing’s for sure, we can do all we can to help this guy get his chance. Will you please share his picture and story on your social media outlets?
We may not be able to save them all, but we can save one at a time!
This is Tuesday’s Tails Blog Hop, hosted by Dogs ‘N Pawz, many thanks to Lisa and the crew for a great opportunity to help dogs in need of forever homes.
Roxy the traveling dog says
I hope all the dogs can find a great home.
Leslie says
Well written, Jodi. Doing my best not to cry here myself.
Consider this little lovebug shared.
Laura says
Well Leslie is doing better than I am . . . I’m sitting her bawling my eyes out. That face looks so much like our Candy. People just do NOT know what they are missing. Such love, fun and joy dogs give. I can’t imagine our lives without the three who decided to adopt us. I hope she found a home filled with love and belly rubs. sigh . . .
Sue at Talking Dogs says
Your tender and generous heart is in good company, Jodi. Definitely will share that adorable boy. I usually share dogs from “kill shelters” and at this point, I don’t ever go back to check for the dog. Cannot stand the wondering. Sometimes over the years, the rescue or shelter let me know the dog was adopted. Unfortunately, that’s rarely happened (that I find out the good news.)
Caren Gittleman says
Just tweeted her!
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
Let’s try to think positive that she DID get out — adopted to loving folks who will give her all the love and attention she needs!
And let’s pray that the sweet little guy gets adopted, too! I’ll share on Facebook in a little while. Have to share Lisa’s post about Lily, too.
What I can’t figure out is why the adoption fee at your pound is 10 times higher. For residents than it is for non-residents. Shouldn’t it be at the very least only a few dollars higher; and more logically a few dollars lower?? Or, are they trying to get these dogs adopted out of their jurisdiction so that any adoption failures won’t be their problem?

Now I have tears too….that sweet face. I hope someone is seeing that face right now, but it sucks to not know, doesn’t it?
Definitely sharing this other handsome guy….I hate that they don’t even have names.
jan says
I wish the Hartford pound would follow the lead of shelters across the country who are moving to No Kill of healthy pets.
Jessica says
I’m really surprised that Hartford has such a high kill rate. It seems very un-New England to me. My impression of Connecticut was always that it was a comparatively rich, politically liberal state, which usually reflects in no-kill or low-kill shelters. Maybe Hartford proper is less well off than the parts of Connecticut I’ve been through. Is there any way you could get a group together to advocate for longer hold times?
Molly The Wally says
So sad that they are given such a short time to find a home. It just doesn’t seem right. Our paws are crossed for them. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly

Oh Jodi, you did what you could…sadly we cannot save them all … that poor little girl had a hard life and she did deserve a chance, but 10 days is just such a short time and some babies need more time than that to learn to trust…I do hop the big guy is able to find a place before tomorrow
Mary Ann says
Poor little guy. I hope he gets a break.
houndstooth says
I hope he finds his happy ending! He’s adorable!
Jana Rade says
Her face looks just as sweet as Cookie’s. I so hope she made it out, like Cookie did. Who could resist such a face?
Lauranne says
Keeping everything crossed that she did get out! Another dog that we have humans have used, abused and then disposed of – it makes me SO mad!!!! Something has to be done!!
2 brown dawgs says
Hopefully the girl found a home and the boy finds a nice home.
I don’t understand the thinking of removing a dog from any given situation only to euthanize it. Or maybe euthanizing this dog was what they had in mind when it was removed? That to me is the question.
Dogs N Pawz says
I so hope she found a home and that the boy does too. I hope I’m not too late, but I’m off to share. I feel bad for all of these Pittie mixes that don’t have homes. It just seems like there are way too many of them out there. After having Phe, I can’t even begin to tell everyone how sweet and precious they are. Paws crossed that he finds a home. Thanks for joining the blog hop.
Sam says
I’m hoping she found a good home.

Sand Spring Chesapeakes says
I hope she got adopted and hope the handsome guy finds a home too.
Ania says
I hope he will find home. I totally understand what you feel, I’m in very similar situation right now. There is a beautiful dog at the shelter where I volunteer, I’m in love with this amazing pup but I can’t take him home :(. Everyday I hope for someone who will come and pick him. The shelter had to euthanized a couple of dogs today to make more room for new dogs, and I’m afraid that he will be next. It is so heart breaking. I will share this.
