Last week Sampson had to go to the vet to have his lump checked. Typically we bring both dogs. We always joke it’s for moral support, but truthfully we hate leaving one home while the other one goes out.
Hubby couldn’t go with us, or meet us there so I had no choice. I had to leave Delilah home.
Alone.
This may come as a surprise to you, but Delilah can get a little pissy if you come home and leave right away. People will tell you that dogs don’t do things out of spite.
To that I say, you haven’t met Delilah.
I decided it would just be easier to crate her, but I wanted to make sure she had a nice treat to make her stay in the crate a bit more comfortable.
Sampson’s appointment was at 4:40, so we had to leave the house about 4:20 I showed Delilah the treat and she jumped happily beside me as we made our way to the crate.
We were gone about an hour and twenty minutes. When she came out of the crate she dropped the treat and some goodies fell out.
WHAT?
This is the dog that eats her frozen bone, then takes Sampson’s and cleans it up.
What was this magic treat?
A five-layer Kong.
Here’s what I did. I took a large Kong and put about a tablespoon of canned pumpkin in the bottom making sure to seal the small hole. I stuck that in the freezer the night before.
The next morning I added a layer of pineapple chunks, then a layer of Vanana yogurt, a layer of wild blueberries and I topped it off with another layer of pumpkin. I put it in the freezer, for about 8 to 9 hours.
It’s a simple recipe, but it kept the Destroyer busy for over an hour.
Have you found any treats that really occupy your dog? Do you have a Destroyer at home?
This is Tasty Tuesday hosted by Kol’s Notes and Sugar the Golden Retriever.

That sounds like a great treat. I am never organized to make things ahead. You are a good pet mom.

Result!
Gizmo (@GizmoGeodog) says
That is one gourmet Kong Delilah has there…I’ve only done single-layer stuffers for Gizmo, usually just peanut butter and that keeps him busy for quite a while

LOL! I have one who does things out of spite too. He’s not really a destroyer. He’s more subtle. He leaves poops where you don’t find it for a couple of days, inside. Sneaky little b*******! The guilt always shows on his face….I know people say dogs can’t feel guilt, but I disagree.

We aren’t destructive. We stay home together or alone just fine, no crates. I do tend to howl when I get lonely for Mom but that is about it. We don’t own a Kong and have never tried one but we hear about them all the time. My mom is the same way and doesn’t like to leave either of us behind but she tries to do it sometimes so we aren’t so dependent on each other but I don’t think it is working out for her. Tonight I have an appt. with mom and we have to leave Katie home. Mom already feels so bad about doing that.

This is brilliant! We will try this with our pups. I usually go the peanut butter route but this vegan treat sounds even better.
Oz the Terrier says
Holy stuffed Kong! That would keep me busy for hours!!!

I have a large Kong that I never use with my little guys, but now I’m off to fill it and put it in the freezer for the next emergency

I like your style–and I’m shocked she didn’t finish it. I actually need to get this type of KONG, because we had the Genius variety and, well, ya know… not a Rhodes Scholar. He would give up right away because things were too difficult to get out. I still don’t really know if it’s stupidity or laziness.

I’m going to have to remember this!! Fantastic you found something to occupy her time. Teach isn’t a destroyer but does like to be occupied with something yummy to do!

Dakota’s crate days ended years ago. One day he refused to enter it any longer, he had had enough. We put the crate away and haven’t put him in it since. When he was younger (2 yrs and under) he destroyed EVERYTHING and had to be crated whenever we left the house.
Now, he is the “perfect gentleman” when we are gone.
I do LOVE your treat recipe…may have to try that! I wouldn’t advise using pumpkin in a treat though if anyone is going to be gone for a long period of time. It makes the bowels move!
Molly The Wally says
That sounds great and BOL peeps call me The Dark Destroyer. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly

Yum!

Wow, busy for over an hour! I’m gonna have to try that. (Although I’m not sure Rita would dig the blueberries or the pineapple. She’s fussy and not a great fruit lover.) Luckily Rita is not a destroyer. She’s happy to just lie around at home while we’re gone.

I really need to get a kong(s) and try this! 🙂

I learned not to layer Silas’s Kong. When he gets desperate for whatever’s in the bottom, he just throws it down the stairs. Cue scrubbing pumpkin off the wall.
He does have a vastly over-sized Kong (probably the size of Delilah’s, even though he’s 30lbs). I left it with him one day full of frozen stuff while was gone for an hour and a half. When I came home he was all “Hi, lady, I’ve still got a Kong here BRB.”

THAT is Brilliant!!! I have ERNIE the ERADICATOR !!!
Flea says
You are BRILLIANT!!! BRAVO!!!
I don’t have destroyers. I have chicken escape artists who like to jump the fence. 🙁
joann stancer says
That looks really nummy, thanks for sharing and glad she loved it and it kept her busy.
Blueberry's human says
Well, thanks for making me look bad. 😉 All I did was put some treats in a container of water for them to freeze over night and I was so proud of myself…until I read your post. Delilah sure is lucky to have you!
Thank goodness Blueberry is not destructive. I know I am inviting trouble by even thinking that – but it’s fairly true. Even if she does get ornery – she hasn’t ever destroyed anything like a wall or furniture or carpet. (The other dogs in my past certainly have.)
houndstooth says
I feel like such a slacker now. We haven’t done anything that elaborate with the Kongs in a long time. But I am glad you kept her busy! We have one here who isn’t happy about being left, either.
Maggie says
I just wrote that out on a recipe card!!! Thank you! I was trying to think of how to keep my 3 destroyers busy for a few hours on Saturday, and you totally solved the problem! 🙂
Callie, Shadow and Ducky's Mom says
I assume those pineapple chunks are the fresh kind, not canned in sugary water? Callie and Shadow don’t like bananas — it might be the texture more than the taste tho, because they like fresh strawberries as long as they’re not “mushy”. Until Callie had her knee surgery in February, I almost always took both of them to vet appointments. Now that the knee is healed, I’m back to it again. After poor Shadow had the two growths removed within 3 weeks of each other last month, I wanted her to see that every trip to Dr. Steve doesn’t mean she’s going to be a little tender somewhere. So, when Callie had to have blood drawn for her thyroid panel 2 weeks ago, Shadow came with us. And hid in the corner until Dr. Steve gave her a treat. Ducky I take by herself all the time because the crate takes up more than half of the back seat.
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
Sound like a great treat!
Kim - Life at Golden Pines says
At least you have found the right ‘recipe’ to keep your girl busy, and at least she was still IN the crate when you got home!
I’ve not given a frozen Kong in a long time, and should do it for Todd–I used to wet kibble down a little bit and put it inside with some of the same things you did, and that slowed them down a bit, but then they aren’t Delilah! 🙂 .
BJ Pup says
Very creative. You’re on to something.
acd6pack says
We do the frozen layered Kong treats here too! Well, all except for Breeze. If the stuffings in a Kong don’t fall out (literally) she won’t bother with it. The others will happily gnaw away for an hour or more. We’ve never tried pineapple, that’s going in the next time!
SUGAR: Golden Woofs says
Yes I do see the blueberries. Your recipe is a good frosty recipe .. most likely if we try it will use a mold instead of a Kong. Golden Thanks for sharing. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
SlimDoggy says
I usually just sleep when momz goes out, but maybe if I start misbehaving while she’s gone, she’ll make me one of these! Thanks for the tip!
Basil says
Typist is always looking for ways to keep her dog occupied while she is out. However he isn’t massively food orintated and on the odd occasions she has stuffed a kong she has returned to find it untouched, if she put a treat in it to make him figure out how to retreive the treat from the kong he just leaves it! Maybe she needs to try caviar! BOL
Donna says
Lucky dog. Loads of goodies in that one! And how great that it kept her busy as long as it did.
Kirsten says
Whoa Jodi. You make the most amazing frozen treats! My dogs are a tad picky, so there’s often some stuff left over…it’s with the foster dogs that I have to get really creative:)
