One, two foxes at my front door, that’s what I said now
Foxes, foxes who ignore you, they run ahead now
Sorry for the Spin Doctors reference, it just popped into my head. And now, it’s stuck in yours. You’re welcome.
Hubby made to step out the door Friday night intent on putting the doors on his jeep. Sampson was right behind him, when he said, “There are two foxes out here.”
Isn’t this adorbs? Yes, I want one.
Immediately I said, “Well he can’t go out then.”
Sampson said, “Woof, woof, whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine” which is Retriever for, “Let me at that Schiznit.”
Then Delilah joined the party. When they were denied access to the front yard, they raced out the back, but the fox were too fast. Once they saw Hubby they high-tailed it out of our yard and into the neighbor’s yard.
The next day Sampson sniffed the yard methodically, I think he was trying to figure out whose dog it was.
We have seen wildlife around the area. We’ve seen deer and wild turkeys. We’ve been told there are fishers and coyotes but we’ve never seen them. And we’ve never had a fox in the yard before. It makes me a tad bit nervous, only because I worry about them getting into the fence and one of the dogs getting into an altercation with it. (Like the time we had the deer in the yard.)
What types of wildlife do you have in your area? Are they bold enough to step into your yard? Do you worry about your pets getting into the animal version of a pissing contest?

We had three foxes in a back garden a month or so back. With Pip being nearly blind and death and having a bad tum it was out with the big broom just in case they came into the garden and tried to attack her. Luckily it is Summer now and they have gone. We have a lot of foxes here and they are brazen. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly

I can’t believe you had them in your yard. Lucky for them, there are none in our neighborhood. Storm would probably like to take on a fox…lol.

When we lived in London, urban foxes were a real problem. They used to find food from old-fashioned dustbins but when local authorities introduced wheely bins the main source of food dried up. This led to the foxes becoming more and more brazen. One day one of our cats started hissing at the window and we looked out to see a fox approaching our oldest cat who was busy blissfully rolling in the catnip. A close run thing as we were luckily there and could rush out and scare the fox off…

Well, let’s see … About five or six years ago, there was a bear cub in someone’s yard on the other side of town. Animal Control had to call Park Rangers from Asheville to come get the “little guy”. No more since then tho. Some garden snakes here and there maybe, but not in our yard. Nope, about the only animal that comes into our yard — other than squirrels, chipmunks, and field mice — is the neighbors’ cat. It killed one of the chipmunks last night and left it in our yard. I’m still pissed off about that. So help me, the next time I see that damn cat in our yard, I’m gonna grab my stepson’s BB gun and scare the hell out of that pest. I won’t shoot it — I couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn if I wanted to — but I will fire the thing (without loading it). I’ve had it with that cat leaving its “treasures” in our yard for the dogs to find! Their other cat never came into our yard because of the dogs but this one waits until the dogs are inside and then jumps the fence. (The other cat has been missing for about 2 weeks now. Sam & I think she went off somewhere to cross the Rainbow Bridge on her own. She was about 17 years old and always stayed close to home.)

We are totally fenced in but gophers take the underground route to get in. If we don’t trap them they make dog and cat toys which is not pleasant for any involved. Foxes would be enchanting, I think.
Gizmo (@GizmoGeodog) says
It’s pretty urban around here so mostly we get the ducks from the lake, the occasional bunny and some feral cats…Of course there are the ‘gators in the lake if that counts…I’ve only managed to spot a fox once, years ago in a different house…They’re so shy but so adorable

I would NOT like to see any foxes around here!
We have hawks, coyotes (but thankfully I have never seen one) and the usual deer, etc.
Sue at Talking Dogs says
Hmm… I’d be worried about disease if the dogs got too close to those foxes! I shouldn’t even answer your question. Fox, coyotes, possums, coons, bobcats, bears, deer, turtles, voles, moles, armadillo… shall I go on? 😉
Kirsten says
Yes I HAVE seen fox in our suburban neighborhood, along with possums raccoons and tons of deer. Yesterday’s experience took the cake though, on our evening walk we came across a deer who actually stood her ground, reared up, and attacked Lady! No harm done, we were just stunned. She must have had babies nearby. I never would have expected that of a deer!
And yes, I love having wild critters around but always worry about altercations with the pups. Fozzie did in fact get into one with a raccoon and since then he has had his nighttime outside privileges reduced!

Apparently there are foxes in my area, though I’ve never seen one. Coyotes too. Deer, definitely, which have little to no fear of man. Oh yeah, and cornish game hen fat squirrels in the library’s park. They come up to you and beg like little dogs; I’ve considered clicker training one or more of them for the lolz.
Oz the Terrier says
A fox?!? We don’t have anything like that. Just the occasional (nonpoisonous) snake, all sizes of lizards, tree rats, bunnies, squirrels, egrets, great blue herons and a Cooper’s hawk. Oh! And there is a turtle down by the lake!

We saw 2 Fox running across the field on our morning walk back in March…they looked gorgeous from a distance and we wanted to run with them but no luck there. We have seen many deer, a coyote and a few wild turkeys. Not bad considering we live in a pretty residential area.
Frankie and Ernie says
We have chipmunks and rabbits ALL the time… Sometimes we see a fox WAY over on the other hillside.. BUTT you are right to be concerned… Foxes do carry rabies… and they NORMALLY do not come NEAR homes… esp. ones where they can smell Dogs around the property.

Our wildest encounters now are with squirrels and neighborhood cats. Silas did sniff out something in the park one day that terrified him–most likely a raccoon.
Surely the fox would run from dogs as big as Sampson and Delilah?
Beth says
We have foxes. So far we haven’t had any problems with them, but I keep a close eye out for them when the dogs are out. We’ve never seen the foxes in the fenced in part of the yard.
Carol Bondy says
We have all of the above walking thru our yard, plus bear, who was seen walking down the block this week. I am always afraid…especially f skunks. Haha. But we fenced in our backyard and i always put the light on at nite and look over the yeard before i let them out

Hi Jodi,
First, what an adorable baby fox.
My dogs are too small and timid to even go near a wild creature, although Indy loves chasing birds.
I have seen a fox, a wolf, a coyete, a skunk, rabbits, and a racoon that stared me down, and a deer on my property.
Thanks for jogging my memory. 🙂

Even though we live in a Big City, we used to see all kinds of stuff in our yard. (Never a fox though!) We had tons of bunnies and squirrels, BIG raccoons, lots of snakes, and the occasional creepy possum. The worst things we saw were rattle snakes (not in our yard, but at the park), a coyote (on our street), and a bobcat – in our front yard! In our new house, we are on a canyon, but it’s not connected up to other canyons so the only things I’ve seen her are lizards. Although I did see a coyote walking down our street one night. Glad we don’t have a tiny dog or an outdoor cat!
joann stancer says
Wow a couple of foxes, do you live in the city? I would just worry about them possibly peeing in your yard and spreading diseases, wouldn’t worry about sticking around and messing with your dogs, they usually don’t pick fights unless they are sick or rabid. If they see humans or dogs they usually take off. I have all kinds of wildlife in my yard as I live in the county. The dogs love to see deer in the pasture then love to chase them. Chase rabbits and gambler catches squirrels and chipmunks.
Jen@MyBrownNewfies says
Don’t even get me started on our wildlife! Uggh! Deer, turkeys, foxes, groundhogs, coons, they are all here stalking my garden in the middle of surburbia! Don’t get me wrong, I love wildlife-just not when they are eating my garden.
Basil says
Maybe you can talk fox as well as you talk deer and you will have nothing to worry about?!
Basil says
And if you have no idea what I am talking about, then typist has gotten you confused with another brilliant blogger she follows and I apologise on her behalf!! (P.S the brilliant blogger is highlighting that you are both brilliant bloggers, not indicating that the other blogger is of a higher standard than you!)
See what I have to put up with???!!

He is adorable! We have fox here, surprisingly, but they are apparently making a comeback on LI. We also have racoons, possums, turtles, garter snakes, hawks, and the usual squirrels.
And don’t forget the feral cats. 🙁
I worry more about the dogs having an altercations with the racoons to be honest. The fox are shy and tend to take off, but those racoons aren’t as easily cowed.
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
Oh that would be so cool to see foxes but I agree I would be afraid of the dogs going for them. We have the usual squirrels, bunnies, wild turkeys, deer and a couple of weeks ago a saw two coyotes in a field.
houndstooth says
Our biggest wildlife issue is rabbits! Pesky devils! There are occasional deer here, and I know coyotes are around, but I’ve never seen them in the yard. And I’m okay with that!
Pamela | Something Wagging This Way Comes says
I suspect a fox would do anything to avoid a scrap with Sampson or Delilah (unless he was rabid; always a concern). I say be careful and enjoy having nature in your yard.
