Guide dog saves man and woman from swerving vehicle.
Oh my God! Did you see this video? I think it’s awesome, O’Neil is going to make someone an awesome little guide dog.
Hot Cars and Dogs
It’s that time of year when the days get warm and lots of people are out and about with their dogs. In cars. And then they leave their dogs. In cars. And go into the stores.
Two weeks ago I called the police and waited over 45 minutes. The cops never showed but the woman finally did. Right after I wrote a little note on the back of my business card asking her to e-mail for a free fact sheet explaining how hot it gets in a car.
She was angry that I had called the police and told me her dog was ‘her kid.’ Then she turned on her car and told me the temperature was only 71 degrees. Yes, it was only 71 degrees outside, but not inside the car. I’d been inside my car after it was shut up for 10 minutes and it was a lot hotter than 71 degrees.
She never did e-mail me.
Yesterday it was cool, but warm in the sun. I stopped at Big Y and sure enough, I passed a station wagon with two dogs inside it. I could feel my stomach start to churn. When I came out of the store 10 minutes later, the dogs were still in the car.
You can see the shape of one of the dogs in the back on the passenger side. When I took the photo the other dog wasn’t visible.
I took my photo inside the store to the service desk and I said, “There’s a car in the parking lot with two dogs in it and one of the dogs is down on the seat.”
The girl immediately took the information down.
I didn’t wait. I know it was horrible, but quite frankly I’m tired of arguing with stupid dog owners. On the way back to work I thought, maybe I need to start carrying ice cubes with me. That way when I see a dog, I can slip some ice cubes through the open windows onto the driver’s seat and provide a little cool refreshment for the dog(s.)
It might also make the owner a tad bit uncomfortable on the ride home. Perhaps a little note to go along with it?
Your wet ass is nothing compared to how distressed your dog is in a hot car. Be thankful I didn’t bust your window with a brick.
It might need some refining.
Pooch Smooches
You remember my co-hostess Jackie from the last Follow-up Friday? She had her own run-in yesterday with a stupid dog owner. I feel so badly for her and her friend, but I’m so proud she stood up to that bully!
Speaking of Follow-Up Friday, my co-hostess this week is none other than my dear friend Kari, from Hound Girl.
Our weather dude is predicting a Nor ‘easter starting today and going into tomorrow and they’re afraid we’re going to have some power outages. Just a fyi, in case you don’t see me around. 🙂

glad you wrote that and glad that you called the police. Shame on the police for not showing up though.
Also, please be careful if you wait in the immediate vicinity for the car owner to appear, there are psychos out there!

Your idea of ice cubes on the seat is perfect!

I like the idea of the ice cubes 🙂 Nothing like a wet butt to make your point! I just can’t believe how often I see dogs in cars in the hot sun – it makes me so mad!! Like my hubby always says, “you can’t fix stupid”. Hope the storm misses you – I’m supposed to fly back to Oregon tonight . .fingers crossed that I get home!!

I love the ice cube idea! I can’t believe how often you see dogs in cars! I hardly ever see that here.
Thank you for the shout out! I normally really try to just steer clear of the crazy, but I couldn’t believe what bullies these guys were. People who have no clue about dog behavior – and whose first instinct is to immediately hit another dog – have no business being at the dog park!

I LOVE the ice cube on the seat idea!! Along with some plain old water — was gonna say sweetened iced tea but I don’t want a dog lapping up the tea — GEEZ I HATE STUPID PEOPLE!! Especially the arrogant ones who think they know it all!! YOU GO GIRL!! Carry an insulated cup full of ice cubes around with you and help those pups!! Happy Thursday!!

I hate stupid dog owners. And shame on the police for being a no-show. What’s up with that?

The dog in a hot car issue is one I don’t know how to solve. Anyone who drives their dog around with them on errands obviously loves their company. But they just don’t have common sense.
I suspect part of the reason is that people drive around in air conditioning. They’ve forgotten what it feels like to be in a hot car.
But I think your note took the right tone. I can imagine people feeling embarrassed and defensive when they leave their dogs in a hot car without realizing the danger. And they likely strike out at the person telling them what a moron they were.
Maybe a combination of assuming people want the best for their dogs and acting as their allies and public shaming (having the store broadcast that they left their dogs in the hot car) is the best we can do.
On a personal note, I remember eating outside in weather that was cold enough to have me shivering in a winter coat. Why? Because when we were in the car, Honey was panting. Even on a cool day, the solar gain in a car is tremendous.

It’s so sad to think how many dogs have to die before people get the idea that a car turns into an oven when it sits in the sun for even a short time. I continue to watch for dogs in cars and call the police (who never take 45 minutes to show up).
Along with info on how long it takes for temperatures to rise, I think it might also be helpful to write a note telling them what the penalty is for killing a dog in a hot car.
I’m chuckling over the person getting into the car and finding they are sitting on ice cubes while their dogs are laughing at them.

We just were over and reading about poor Jackie and now this. What is it with these stupid people? Yep chuck some ice cubes in the car. Hope they get a wet butt. Have a terrific Thursday.
Best wishes Molly

Thanks so much for participating in TNT.
I hate when I see dogs locked in cars. You may remember, we have thermometers in our cars to monitor the temperature. 71 is not always too hot to be in the car for a bit. As you say it depends on clouds and sun and humidity. I think you would need a lot of ice though. I am not sure a cube or two would be enough. 😉
Off lead dogs charging us are my worst nightmare. As I wrote over there, we carry a stick to deal with them. Just the way it is. Safer for both dogs than a fight. It sounds like the whole scene was bad. Too much hitting on both sides and the once innocent person is the only one injured.

sorry…”the only innocent person is the only one injured.”

We don’t have snow in MN but it has still been cold and raining almost everyday so there hasn’t been much time for idiots to lock dogs in hot cars yet. We just don’t understand it but then again a baby died here yesterday because the parents left her in a car for 4 hours in her car seat and it was only 70 out, so think about dogs with fur and no ability to really sweat! Very sad and another reason we love winter…we can always ride along on errands but even then, mom doesn’t like us to be alone in the car for very long. Good for you for sticking up as best as you could for those poor doggies!

ROTFLMAO. You know those cheap thermometers you can get for $1? I keep a couple in my purse, with a web address for the hot dogs site on the back in sharpie and poke them through the windows as soon as I see a dog in a car on a hot day. I usually wait a couple minutes, just in case the owner is legit. just running in. Then I call our SPCA officers who are GREAT at coming out.
Usually, even the owners who know the information are surprised by how hot the thermometer reads.

That backwards driver – HO-LEEEE CRAP.
I don’t think your ice cube and note need any refining. At all. Do it. Or maybe an ice cream sandwich.

Great This ‘N That Thursday!
It really bothers me to see people leave their dogs in a hot car too. To many stupid pet owners out there and that is unfortunate for the poor pet they own 🙁
