The older I’ve gotten the more aware I’ve become of toxins, both in my environment and my food. I strive (with the occasional concession here and there) to live a healthy lifestyle for both myself and my dogs.
A few months back I asked YOU my dear and faithful readers if you were interested in hearing about healthy products/options to help you and your pets live a healthier lifestyle as well. The general consensus was yes.
And Yes, this is one of those posts.
Besides walking every day with the dogs, I’ve also eliminated MOST processed foods. Of course, it’s easier in the summer months when a variety of local fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available. Now eliminating the junk you put in your (and your pet’s) bodies is great, but think about your daily routine.
We clean our bodies, clothes, homes and cars with products riddled with toxins. And yes, our liver works really hard to cleanse our bodies of toxins, but it’s one tiny organ being inundated with toxins.
You may remember the product review I did of an all natural organic dog shampoo from Vermont Soap.
My contact at Vermont Soap very generously included a variety of non-toxic health and cleaning products for me to try. Since I already LOVED their dog shampoo I was quite eager to try some other products as well.
Foaming Hand Soap – I love this stuff, it has a slight lemon scent and foams nicely, leaving my hands feeling clean and smelling good.
Liquid Sunshine Non-toxic Cleaner Concentrate – the label says this stuff can be used for everything! So I tried it on everything.
- Floors – I tried it on my floors but I didn’t like it. To be honest though I think I may have had a bit too much cleaner in the water, it is after all a concentrate.
- Dishes – It worked well on the dishes, it’s application is directly onto the cloth and I’m not used to washing dishes that way. I’m a fill the pan with suds kind of gal, so this wasn’t conducive to the way I wash, but I can get used to it.
- Toilets – I squirted some of this in the toilet, scrubbed it up and let it sit and it did a great job. Far better than any other product I’ve used in my toilet.
Liquid Sunshine Non-toxic Spray and Wipe Surface Cleaner – This stuff is excellent on counter tops, tables and appliances.
Chemical Free and Heavy Metal Free Tooth Salt – Great for polishing your teeth, but doesn’t do much to help with morning Troll Breath, I do like the way my teeth feel after using it. But brushing with a salty tasting substance definitely takes some getting used to. 🙂
Tooth Brush Sanitizer – What’s not to like about a toot brush sanitizer? You’ve all heard the stories of the kind of bathroom germs that land on your toothbrush every time you flush your toilet. This is amazing, I spray my toothbrush, jump in the shower and by the time I’m done getting ready, my toothbrush is ready too!
Have you given any thought to the products you use on your person or in your home or on your pets?
Sound off in the comments.

FURST… we gotta tell you that we have had TWO BAFFS with the Vermont Shampoo you sent us… and we actually don’t hate it… MOM on the other paw…. LOVES THE STUFFS. She says we are CLEAN and SMELL FABULOUS.
Now about the cleaning thingys around the house… our mom only uses three thingys plus WATER… White Vinegar MicroFiber Cloths and Mops and now and then a LITTLE Murphy’s Oil Soap…
When “they” moved to this house… it took mom 2 years to FINALLY get all the PRODUCTS washed off thingys.. and to FINALLY have STREAK FREE Windows. She says that there was soooooo much YUCKY Build Up of “STUFFS” that thingys were actually MORE dirty than they should have EVER been.

Vinegar…plain white vinegar…I use it for cleaning almost everything these days

We don’t eat much processed food either. Of course… even eating healthy now will kill you, since we use those organic frozen berries in our smoothies which are now linked to Hep. A. Swell…
Anyway, I’ve been trying to switch to using products that have less chemicals. I haven’t used dryer sheets for years (evil little things) and stopped using anything beyond warm water and maybe some vinegar for the floors long ago. I also use Method brand laundry and hand soaps, and we have some lovely local olive oil soap that we use in the shower and for the dog.
But the one thing I can’t find a good alternative for is the toilet cleaner. I tried using some natural stuff, but we have such hard water here, it just wasn’t doing a good job. Same with the dishwasher. Ugh. My dishes and glasses looked horrible. Those are the 2 places where I’m afraid I’m still using the conventional stuff. (I know I know – I should just live with the hideous dishes.. .but seriously my glasses were being ruined. I suppose if I was a better person I’d just wash them by hand… but I’m not that good.)

Ok, did you change something with your email subscriptions as I am not getting your posts anymore and I don’t see a subscribe thing on the sidebar, just the rss feed? We like getting all our blogs in our email, weird, I know but that way mom can see what she still has to read and delete stuff she doesn’t want etc.

Interesting. We’re a fan of Dr. Bronner’s Soap in various concentrations around the house. Method’s bathroom cleaner is the only remotely green thing that I’ve found really effective for getting the hard water residue off the bathtub.
I feel bad in the kitchen for using disinfecting wipes, even though mine are the “green” Seventh Generation ones. But I tend to splatter Silas’s raw food, and my husband is completely skeeved out by it.

I’m with Gizmo. I use vinegar. As well as baking soda, washing soda, and other old fashioned items. They have the other benefit of being cheap.
But I appreciate hearing about small and local companies providing nontoxic products. Unfortunately, many of them are eventually bought out by huge conglomerates who are doing all kinds of evil things with their other product lines.

I just use everyday cleaning products. I do use vinegar on some things. I wish I could say it was because I am being all green, but the truth is, it works best. 🙂
SUGAR: Golden Woofs says
We are interested in sanitizer for toothbrush. Is there an after taste? Is it safe for dog? No processed food and sugary drinks in our house. We feel bad if we have guests caused we can only offer filtered water and wine. We always have fresh fruits in our house, lots of banana for me. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

Good for you on detoxin, I don’t think I could do it. Great review on the natural products.

Great review!
Maybe you could try one of those wands you fill with dish soap that has a scrubber end, I use one and love it.
I always close the toilet lid when I flush especially after I heard there are tens of thousands feces and urine germs sprayed in the air when you flush. Now when I have to use a public toilet, which do not typically have a lid to close I try to hurry out of the room because all I can think about is all those germs circulating me.

Don’t know how I missed this post in June. I’ve been trying to detox too. I use baking soda and vinegar ALOT. Baking soda is amazing for cleaning.
