While I was at BlogPaws I stopped by the Jones Natural Chews booth to meet my friend Flea.
The folks at Jones were one of the sponsors of BlogPaws so naturally I left the booth with a couple of treats for Sampson and Delilah.
Imagine my surprise on Saturday when I was handed a bag with a variety of Jones treats to take home with me.
One of the treats I was excited about were these marrow bones.
I figured once they got all the marrow out, I had another set of bones to pack with pumpkin.
Back story: We’d left my mother and niece in charge of the dogs, for 36 hours. Thirty-six. A day and a half.
All they had to do was to feed the dogs two meals, Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. The meals were meticulously prepared and placed in plastic baggies in the refrigerator, and labeled, Sampson dinner, Delilah dinner. You get the picture, right?
Hubby spent 25 minutes explaining to my niece the additional supplements each dog required. (This was I think, the flaw in the plan.)
For those of you playing along at home here are the key points: 36 hours, 2 dogs, 4 meals.
Despite the instructions and the prepared food, the labeled baggies AND the fact that my mother has fed the dogs many times herself, somehow, incredibly Frick and Frack managed to feed the dogs three days worth of chicken necks for Sunday breakfast.
This equates to about 2 1/2 pounds. EACH. Of chicken necks. In one meal.
Which I did not realize until after I’d fed them their dinner, when I went in the fridge to get their second course and noticed the individual baggies which I questioned Hubby about.
Hubby was furious and I have to admit I wasn’t too happy either.
I called my niece who was supposed to be in charge, but she had no explanation.
If I’d known about this before I fed them dinner, I wouldn’t have fed them.
Of course, Sampson and Delilah couldn’t understand why they didn’t get a snack on Sunday night.
Monday morning I held back on a full breakfast and called the vet, who recommended they get no more bones for a couple of days and suggested there might be a bit of straining as they tried to pass all that bone. She advised straight meat and veggies for a couple of days.
Dogs on raw diet usually have a harder, more compact stool, so I watched and waited, waited and watched. Finally on Wednesday there was no more bone in their stool.
Still we held off on the marrow bones, until Saturday night, and let me tell you, the dogs were excited to get them.
Nom, nom, nom, what’d you make me wait for?
After about 15 minutes or so, I took the bones away, labeled a baggie for Sampson and another for Delilah and put the bones in the fridge.
I packed them with pumpkin and put them in the freezer the next day and they’ve been enjoying the same marrow bone for three nights now.
I’ve got a wedding in August I need to be gone five days for, anyone want to dog sit?
It’s Tasty Tuesday, hosted by Kol’s Notes and Sugar the Golden Retriever.
Dogs N Pawz says
Those look yummy! So sorry about Sampson and Delilah. Glad they are okay! If I lived close I would dog sit for you!
Animalcouriers says
Poor dogs! There’s always a price to pay for what seem like windfalls.
Sue @ The Golden Life says
OMD! Well, at least Sampson and Delilah enjoyed it all! All of our family – both sides – are in different states, so I rely on a professional pet sitter when I need one. “Auntie Andrea” takes good care of my furry kids, so I don’t worry about them at all. I’d love to pet sit for you, but I can’t leave my kids with their Dad — I’d come back to three dogs with GI issues from all the crap he’d eat and share with them. 🙁
Seriously though, check out Pet Sitters International on the net — that’s how I found mine, about 6 years ago. There’s even an interview checklist/suggested questions form on the site. And it’s not all that expensive when compared with boarding them somewhere. It’s actually less expensive than the PetSmart PetsHotel, and the dogs will be home waiting for you when you get back.
Molly The Wally says
OMD all those chicken necks in one sitting. Yikes surprised they weren’t sick as well. At least they are OK. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly
Jodi, Kolchak & Felix says
Kolchak would like to high five Delilah. He’s super jealous that he didn’t get to worm so much as an extra breakfast out of the Nana and Daddy. (He did get more treats than he can hold though, so……there’s that.) I’m glad they passed it all with no incidence – that’s a woof load of bone!

Oh boy! I bet those were some happy dogs when they got all that food…they were thinking “jackpot”! It is so hard to have someone else care for us too, as we are so set in the way we do things and all but sometimes mom has to get away and we have no choice. I guess extra food is not the worst thing in the world!
Julie says
That is exactly why I always leave typed, step-by-step notes, but how can you be sure that they will follow them? I’m glad everything came out okay (literally!).
Sandy says
I guess the instructions were too complicated, two bags each clearly labeled, one a day. Geez, glad the dogs didn’t get sick, I have no idea what you should do for a five day trip.
Urban hounds says
Oh dear I’m sure they paid 4 it but I know the loved it

Wow, that’s a lot of chicken! Our cottage is rather small, or I would offer to dog sit!
But if you need a a recommendation for a really great kennel, let me know. My daughter works for a kennel, the same kennel I worked at while in high school and college. It’s very clean, great staff, and the owners live on the property.
Jackie Bouchard says
OMD, that’s crazy. Glad the pups were okay. They were probably like “Yeah! We wanna have them dog sit EVERY time!!”
My sis and I trade dog-sitting duties and are both hyper-vigilant (read: anal) so it works out well. Even when our last pup had cancer and needed lots of extra supplements at very specific times, it was all good. It’s nice to have a reliable dog-sitting option. Hope you figure something out!
Oz the Terrier says
Well, I bet I know two people who won’t be dog-sitting any time soon. Good grief. Talk about a ton of chicken!!! I am glad they are both okay and didn’t have any real issues passing all that bone.

Ugh, that’s frustrating. Maybe next time instead of baggies, do day-of-the-week Sharpied tupperware…y’know, like those boxes that you put your week’s worth of pills in?
Beagles and Bargains says
Glad your dogs loved some treats from Jones Natural Chews! Luna loves them too. We have a few in our Post BlogPaws Giveaway right now. You should enter!
Flea says
Holy smokes! Heads would be rolling here. Seriously. On the chopping block. Don’t mess with the kids or the critters, people. Mama’s head spins and she spews pea green soup. Really, it’s the only time I blow my stack. Well, don’t ever bring up McDonald’s, either …
I’m so glad your babies enjoyed the marrow bones! And glad they passed all the neck bones. 🙂
Carol Bondy says
Wow….jackpot for them…not too good for you…i. Would be furious too!!!!
Rosemary says
Henri is reading over my shoulder and drooling over the pictures of the bones!
It’s hard leaving dogs behind in someone else’s care. Nobody takes care of our dogs the way we do!
joann stancer says
They were loving all the extra food. They weren’t telling it was too much. Glad they liked the bones.
Jessica@YouDidWhatWithYourWeiner says
I didn’t make it by the Jones booth but had previously won some treats from them – the rib rollers. Between all of the subscription boxes I ordered for the comparison, and the treats I brought home from BlogPaws, it will be a while before we get to them.
houndstooth says
I am trying to imagine you coming home and your head NOT exploding! Oh, I’d have been livid, but I admit it, I’m laughing a little!
Every time I walked past that Jones booth, they gave me more stuff! The dogs are glad they did!
Basil says
Wow that’s a whole lot of necks!!!
Sue at Talking Dogs says
Oh, oh, I’ve got my judgey pants on… and I think you need new dog sitters 🙁
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
Okay you had me laughing when you used the terms frick and frack but I do feel for Delilah and Sampson, glad they are okay. Really sounds like something my family would do too. In fact while I was gone for 24 hours last weekend Riva received two breakfasts while Cheyenne had none, although I knew she wouldn’t eat until I returned and Riva happily scarfed down her second serving…lol
2 brown dawgs says
Yikes that could have turned out badly. Glad it all worked out and they have shiny (maybe not shiny) new snack bones. 🙂
