Today we’re joining our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs for This ‘N That Thursday.
As 2 Brown Dawgs says, “This ‘N That Thursday is for those times when you want to post about unrelated topics or each topic isn’t quite long enough to make up a whole post. It can be anything you want, so feel free to grab the button and join us!”
Nosework
Delilah and I recently completed our third nosework class. Our first class was just getting the dogs used to sticking their heads in boxes in their search for food.
Our second class Ariane added a couple of every day objects, as their hunts won’t always be in a controlled setting.
This past week, she upped the ante even more, by placing the food in random places.
Most of the dogs really ‘get it’ now and become super excited to ‘play.’
I try to keep Delilah busy and distracted until it’s our turn, but the funny thing is after only two nosework classes she’s already associating the word “Ready” with hunting, as I slipped and used it while practicing our “heel” command. She instantly turned and started towards the boxes. Good thing I had a grip on the leash.
Now if I could only get her to respond that quickly to a recall.
I have another video that I’ll try to share tomorrow, youtube wasn’t cooperating.
Dog fight in Nosework
There was a dog fight in Nosework class on Tuesday and it wasn’t my dog. Is it wrong to be excited about that? I don’t mean about the fight, I mean the fact that it wasn’t my dog!
Here’s what happened:
Ariane said if we were comfortable and our dogs were under voice control we could let them off-leash. Most of us just dropped the leash because our dogs were excited and ran right to the center of the room.
Tegan who is about Delilah’s size (but I don’t know her breed) was ready to work, her mom released her and instead of running straight to the center of the room, Tegan headed for Ariane, but at the last-minute she veered off and headed toward another dog.
Remember when I told you about the little American Eskimo dog that was a little yippy? Yeah, that’s the one Tegan headed toward and Misty yap, yap, yapped right in Tegan’s face and Tegan said, “You did not just do that!” And she let Misty have it. Then Misty responded and whoop there it is.
Thankfully the dogs were separated and no damage was done. Of course Tegan no longer has the freedom of having her leash dropped.
Delilah being the nosy Lab that she is perked up, but I calmly told her it was okay and she was okay we maintained the status quo in our little area of the room.
Product Reviews
I mentioned a couple of weeks back about trying to live a healthier lifestyle and sharing what I’m learning with you. I have a product review in the works for you and your pup and hope to have that up next week.
Are there any types of products you’d like to learn about? Any toxins you’d like replaced with a more natural product? I’d be happy to do some research. 🙂
This is the This ‘N That Thursday Blog Hop hosted by our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs.
Whatever you do today, make it a good one!

Jodi….why not use “READY” as your emergency recall also….when she comes back to you make her sit and stay…then go hide something behind a tree or bush, and have her go find. You will be amazed how well it works because I do it with my laser lite. Also in the house…I make them sit and stay in one spot…I hide treats all over, and then tell them go find. Now I am amazed when I tell them. “do you want to play hide and seek”. They just go sit in a corner and wait. Sometimes, I am the one hiding and they have to find me. Lol

Looking forward to product reviews. Nose work looks like fun. We’ll try that at home.

Woohoo! The linky looks so good here! Thanks so much for participating!
Delilah looks like a pro doing nose work. Really!
One thing I hate about some training with groups, are owners who think their dogs can be off lead. One time hubby was training with his HRC club and this guy had his Lab off lead. Storm was waiting in the holding blind so she had no where to retreat. Lab came up and tried to have his way with her….yeah she told him! If your dog has to “visit” others then it needs to stay on lead.
I have discovered a new recall with Storm. I have been saying “cookie time” when it is time for her gigantic cookies. Even if she is distracted in the yard she comes a running. That did not take long….lol….2 days I think. Too bad gigantic cookies are only here for a short time.

Nosework does sound like fun but a dogfight in class in not acceptable to me…Was the instigating dog’s owner paying attention? or did she just drop the leash? Was she the one you showed on the cellphone?
Looking forward to your product reviews…I’m interested in seeing what natural products you’ve found and recommend
Sue @ The Golden Life says
Funny, I was wondering the same thing as Gizmo: Was the owner of the instigating dog the same one who was on her cell phone? It would figure that a rude owner would have a rude dog.
I’m looking forward to your product review next week! I enjoy reading everyone’s product reviews! Noah @ From the Dog’s Paw did two of them this week so far, and if I remember correctly, Gizmo and Pamela @ Something Wagging each have done one this week as well.
And, last but not least, I’m proud of both you & Delilah for not being involved in that fight in class. You have every right to be excited about it, and proud of your girl!

Wow paws at dawn at the nose work class. Hmmm that shouldn’t happen. We use to play nose work with Pip when she was young by hiding treats and making her find them. Helped give her something to do on a rainy day. Have a terrific Thursday.
Best wishes Molly

That looks like a great way to entertain a dogs active mind. Great job.

What really want to know about is all natural flea and tick repellants, and if they are effective. I really hate having to use K-9 Advantage/Frontline…
Jodi Stone says
Beautiful! I plan on sharing that as I won’t use the topical stuff myself. Look for that in a couple of weeks!!

Yes, inquiring minds want to know if the cell phone lady was the dog fight lady. Cell phones should be banned when a dog is on a leash just as they are when people are driving.
Genevieve says
I love nose work. I always know when Mom has treats in her pocket. When she hides them in my IQ toy, nose-be-damned, I just go insane till I get them all out of there and into my belly.
Love and licks,
Cupcake

Well, dogs do fight, that is just the way it is, people fight too. We have a scuffle at home now and then over something stupid but we are always ok.
Jessica says
I’m glad it wasn’t Delilah, too!
I have that same impulse–thank heavens my dog isn’t the one doing it! Or, “Whew, other dogs do that too!”
Flea says
Tegan? SERIOUSLY?!? Someone named their dog after one of the fourth Doctor’s companions? I LOVE THAT!!!
acd6pack says
We did some nose work today in the kitchen – with handfuls of popcorn!
Looking forward to the product review.

Oh my Jodi I just love that girls face! At the very beginning of your video she looks so beautiful sitting there looking up at you. Delilah I have said it before and I will say it again, YOU ROCK!!!
Wow the linky looks great here, what makes the difference of how it looks here and how it looks on my blog, is it because I use the free wordpress?
Long Life Cats and Dogs says
Well done Delilah on learning the nose hunt so fast and for staying out of the fight. Sometimes I wish I did have a food orientated dog. It would make training so much easier but Litchi truly doesn’t care much for food. She eats to stay alive and that’s about it.
Kirsten says
That’s great that there was no piling on with the dog fight, and no harm done.
I need to find out a natural flea-killer and repellant; at one time I recommended tea tree oil but then I learned that it can be toxic to dogs. Still think its OK in very low concentrations. But I have the sneaking suspicion that you and I have had this discussion before, and I’ve forgotten your answer! Did I?
