Do you Dorot?
I discovered these wonderful little cubes at Trader Joe’s.
Currently I’ve only used the Garlic and Basil, but I love these things! They are little frozen cubes of herbs imported from Israel.
One cube equals one teaspoon, no chopping, mincing or crushing. I pop three cubes of Garlic and three cubes of Basil into my spaghetti sauce and it’s just perfect.
Perfecto.
At Trader Joe’s the price is $1.99, at my local grocery store it’s $2.99.
Once I’ve used all the little cubes I have a nifty little tray to do something else with.
Dog treats!
You could basically freeze anything in these cubes.
Here’s what I put it mine.
This one has pumpkin. I used a butter knife and plopped it in, then leveled it off.
This one has some applesauce and some yogurt.
They freeze pretty quickly and they pop right out. (Except when you overfill the applesauce.)
I don’t know about you, but my guys are always hanging around the kitchen, and when they actually stay out of my way, I like to give them a little reward. The problem is we’re also watching their weight so I don’t like to give too many traditional dog treats.
Besides, have you noticed all the recalls lately? That’s right, when you make your own treats you know exactly what went into them.
Do you have trouble getting medication into your pup? Is (s)he a pill spitter? I see no reason why you couldn’t freeze the pill inside one of these tasty little cubes an hour or so before it was due.
Presto, no muss, no fuss.
Here are some of the other things I’ve thought of that you could put in there:
Beef or chicken broth
Cottage Cheese
Peanut butter
What’s your pups favorite treat? Do you think it’s freezable?
Texas, a cat in New York says
That’s a good idea! Maybe my human could freeze some catnip!
She is using the original ones too 😉
Purrs
Jodi Stone says
She could freeze anything!!
caren Gittleman says
I just add my own spices…but for those who are uncertain when they cook that would be a good thing. How much sodium is in them?
I prefer your idea of making treats from the empty container…THAT is brilliant! 🙂
Jodi Stone says
There is no sodium, it is only the spice. Strait garlic and strait basil. And very tasty I might add. 🙂
Molly The Wally says
I am sure squirrel freezes very well, LOL! I like chewy things. We freeze stuff in summer if we ever get one. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly
Jodi Stone says
I bet squirrel freezes very well Molly. 🙂 We can’t even think of summer just yet, we’re still waiting on spring.
Peggy Frezon says
Great idea for using the trays!
Jodi Stone says
Thanks, I’m in the ‘recycle’ stage of my life. 🙂
Sue @ The Golden Life says
I’ve never seen them in Publix, but I haven’t looked for them either…until now I’d never heard of them. Our Trader Joe’s is about 20 minutes from here in a part of town I hate driving in — not because of the neighborhood but because of the traffic — so I haven’t been in the store even though it’s now about 3 years old. I’ll just keep freezing the yogurt and peanut butter in their Kong toys, I guess.
Jodi Stone says
They are frozen, so naturally they’re in the frozen section, but if you go to their website they have a store finder. I think they are close by the vegetables in my local store.
emma says
Cool idea! We buy Trader Joe’s Dog Cookies, they are so yummy but mom may need to buy some of these so she can freeze treats for us in them…in case it ever gets warm again in Minnesota…right now we are frozen enough 🙂
Jodi Stone says
I do buy some dog treats for S & D there too! They like the organic chicken and brown rice sticks and I sometimes pick up liver too.
We are still frozen here too. 🙁
Carol Bondy says
Great idea….will try that for sure…thanks
Jodi Stone says
It’s quick and easy. If your guys are loving the frozen Kong, no reason they shouldn’t be loving these too!
Animalcouriers says
It’s a fine idea! Haven’t seen them available commercially but we have read that you can freeze your pesto in this way when you have a glut of basil in the summer.
Jodi Stone says
You can freeze your basil too, right? I think just about anything!
jan says
I’ve always made my own basil, garlic, and rosemary cubes, but it’s good to know they are available commercially. Mashed green beans (not for me, for the dogs) are welcome treats when frozen.
Jodi Stone says
You do? Damn you’re domestic Jan!
Blueberry's human says
You are so clever! Love that idea! I’m thinking I could blend up some fresh blueberries, raw honey and applesauce and freeze it into cubes!
Jodi Stone says
Thanks!
Oh I bet that would be delicious! You could even make treats for yourself too!
2 brown dawgs says
That is a great way to reuse something. I saw a ginormous package of those at Sam’s Club. Oh the things you could make with that! 🙂
I love Trader Joe’s, but unfortunately their food gets recalled too.
Jodi Stone says
Show me someone who isn’t getting recalled right now. 🙁
I wonder if BJ’s carries them? I’ll have to look. I let my Sam’s membership expire. 🙁 What was in them, was it only one spice or was it a multi-pack?
2 brown dawgs says
Seems it was different kinds. To be honest I did not look that closely. 🙂 Not sure of the brand either.
I get my Sam’s Club membership through work. One small perk. 🙂
Kat says
I love the frozen cubes of spices! I never thought of using the little cube trays for frozen dog treats. What a great idea! I’ll have to remember it for summer.
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Kat! It was the first thing I thought of.
Flea says
Brilliant! We don’t have Trader Joe’s in Tulsa. *sad face* But your treat idea is pawsome. I’d use it for chicken treats, though. My dogs get Jones Chews as treats, since we know what’s in them.
Jodi Stone says
But of course you do. 🙂 But you could freeze just about anything. The possibilities are endless….
Kolchak, Felix & Jodi says
Those little trays are perfect! Last summer when my herb garden was flourishing, I pureed herbs with olive oil and froze them. We use them all the time; they’re just so so handy!
houndstooth says
I’ve never seen Dorot, but I guess that’s what we get for living in the middle of a cornfield! 😛 Here’s hoping we can find something like that around here, because it looks pretty darned cool! I love all the possibilities!
We sometimes freeze broth to add in to the dog’s water for times when we really need them to drink, like when Kus is out for training in warmer weather. He can be finicky about drinking, but having some of that in the freezer and dropping it into his water pail makes it a lot more interesting. Those little trays would be perfect for that!
Donna says
I used to use them all the time…until I read them and saw the soybean oil. (GMOs) 🙁
I LOVE the idea of re-using the trays.
Jodi Stone says
Oh crap. I didn’t see that!!
Donna says
Sorry. 🙁
acd6pack says
We totally agree with making your own treats! Mainly due to knowing the ingredients but also because it’s cheaper and super cheap once the veggies can be harvested from the garden. How about a slice of banana in with the yogurt and the applesauce?
Wyatt Airedale says
Great idea!! Pumpkin Cubes 😀
Bert says
What a cool find. We just got a trader joes, My Vickie is off tomorrow to go and check it out.

Well… don’t I feel like a dummy. I’ve been using those garlic cubes from Trader Joe’s for ages now (I LOVE them. So easy-peasy!) but never once did it occur to me to use them for making little pup-sicles. You’re so smart! Going to do this as soon as I finish off my latest batch of garlic cubes.
Gizmo (@GizmoGeodog) says
First I have to tell you how jealous I am…Nearest Trader Joe’s is 90 miles away and a 2 hour drive 🙁 I haven’t seen those cubes but they look like a product I’d definitely buy…and I love your reuse of the those cute little trays…the tiny little treat blocks are just Gizmo’s size…Might have to schedule a road trip to TJ’s
