Today we join our friends at the 2 Brown Dawgs blog for This ‘N That Thursday.
“This ‘N That Thursday is for those times when you want to post about unrelated topics or each topic isn’t quite long enough to make up a whole post. It can be anything you want, so feel free to grab the button and join us!”
Wooded Agility
Ever since Snowtober of 2011, almost every time we have a storm we lose more trees and branches in our little neck of the woods.
Sometimes the trees fall in such a way that they cannot be used as an agility jump.
Technically I COULD clear this if I wanted to, but I don’t.
And then sometimes you think they’re a little too high, but your dog proves otherwise.
She really is that athletic.
One day Hubby and I watched in shock and awe as she cleared a pile of brush about three feet high and six feet wide. Of course I never get THAT on video.
Blog Changes.
Yesterday when I was catching up on my blog reading I came across this, Want to Feed Raw but Don’t Know How to Find Sources for Food, by Dawn over at NEPA Pets. I already feed raw and have a food supplier, but I’m always open to new resources. And let me tell you, this article lists some awesome resources not just for raw food, but websites where you can find organic resources for human consumption.
Over the past couple of years I’ve really begun to look at the things I put on and in my body. I think it really started when I switched the dogs to raw.
Whatever. Why, how or when it started doesn’t matter, the fact is it started.
And since I’m so in tune with my consuming habits, I’ve also begun to be very aware of what I expose my dogs to.
There’s a lot of healthy alternatives I’ve discovered in the last couple of years, both human and canine related. I think I’d like to share some of them here.
Hear me out.
I don’t intend to change this blog in the respect that I won’t post stories about my dogs, because that is just never going to happen, but I would like to share with you some of the things I’m doing to improve the lifestyles for the dogs, the Hubby and I.
For instance, did you know that the best oil to cook with is Coconut oil? Besides giving your food a uniquely tropical flavor, coconut oil has many benefits. It is good for your heart, helps maintain your blood sugar and has great immune boosting and anti-bacterial benefits.
Coconut oil is actually solid until the temperature hits 70° and then it liquefies, the best way to liquify coconut oil is to place it (or the jar) in a cup or bowl of hot water. Melting the coconut oil in the microwave destroys many of its excellent properties. I use the solid to grease pans for baking, and recently substituted coconut oil for vegetable oil in chocolate chip blondies. The result was delicious.
And dogs can have the coconut oil too. Sampson and Delilah get a spoonful of it every night to help keep their immune system strong and healthy.
I like a product that is multi-functional and that can be consumed by both the humans and the canines in my household.
I’d like to know what you think about that. I know there are a lot of blogs/websites out there with all kinds of information that you can readily access when you want it, so my question really is this:
Are you interested to know what I’m doing to help me and my dogs stay healthy and live a long and satisfying life? Would you like to know what kinds of natural/healthy alternatives we are incorporating into our lives?
Many thanks to our friends at the 2 Brown Dawgs Blog for instituting This ‘N That Thursday!!

Great idea to share hints and tips that can benefit us all. Your coconut oil suggestion will have to be tried. It has many great benefits and is being trialled on Parkinsons patients as there seems to be some evidence it can repair damage in the brain.

Yes definitely interested. Funnily, I’ve heard about how good coconut oil is before but for the life of me, I cannot find it here. Oh well, will keep looking. Might help that I now know it is solid until melted.

Hi Miss Jodi. I say, “Bring it on!”…who wouldn’t be open to hearing about new things to keep us all healthy? I think it would generate great discussions!!

I’m pretty sure that we would enjoy anything you want to write about and believe me, learning about how to live a healthier lifestyle is something that everyone could use! You can’t trust packaging and companies blatantly lie about foods being “healthy and natural” – we try not to eat anything that comes in a box!

I would DEFINITELY like to know! Please do share more! I give the girls a raw, scrambled organic egg every Sunday to help keep their skin healthy and their coats silky smooth (and free of dandruff). I just started about a month ago on the recommendation of a few different people and I’ve already seen a marked improvement. Oh! And thanks for sharing about the coconut oil! I’ll have to see if I can find some at Publix later.

Great idea for hints and tips. We get sardines in oil sometimes for our coats. I love it so much I give my peeps stinky kisses. Have a terrific Thursday.
Best wishes Molly

Would love to hear more!
I’ve used Coconut oil before too. It’s mostly found in health food stores and usually not in regular grocery stores. I don’t particularly care for the overwhelming aroma or taste of it. But yeah, it is definitely healthier.
While I don’t foresee switching Blueberry to a raw diet (I’ve calculated and it would cost even more than the premium food I already feed her which is Orijen or Acana – Ranchlands) but I do give her a few chunks of meat (boiled lamb or beef stew pieces or hard boiled egg) in her dinner in the evenings. She’s very healthy and plus it makes her evening meal more interesting for her than just dog food day in and day out. I also switch the protein source of her brand of dog food every few months so she doesn’t have to eat the same thing for years on end. I know it isn’t as great as a raw diet – but it’s the best choice for her in my situation and she seems happy.
Can’t wait to hear more about some of the changes you’ve made for your dogs and yourself! 🙂

We are big coconut oil fans, so yes, I would like to know more about what you have found. There are so many fad foods and vitamins recommended by people who are trying to sell them that hearing from someone we trust would be appreciated.

Mom and I learn new things every day on the blogs we read, some of it we can use some we can’t. Keep the info coming and we will sift through as always.

keep it coming Jodi!!!
I’ve been hearing more about the coconut oil, even saw a large container of it at Costco and thought I should have picked some up–next time.
Don’t forget that tomorrow is {SEE BEAUTIFUL} friday. 🙂 This is my public service announcement. LOL

A dog Delilah’s size would probably jump 26 inches in agility, which is the highest jump height in my agility club, the AAC. I bet she could go a lot higher, though. I love using natural obstacles like trees and rocks. It’s so much fun and does a lot more to tire them out.
Very cute video. 🙂
Donna says
That was a great jump Delilah! You go girl. 🙂
Thanks for the link with the meat resources. I’m definitely going to check that out for myself. You probably guessed it already, but I’d be interested in knowing more about what you are doing for yourselves and the dogs to stay healthy. Also, my mom started recently using coconut oil for her dog with allergies and saw a major improvement, so that’s another vote for it! 🙂

I’m definitely a fan of coconut oil and would love to hear about your other tricks and substitutions…I think that would be a valuable feature

I really look forward to the tips! I work daily to improve my diet and Arie’s, so it’s always nice to hear tips from others.
Coconut oil is a staple in my house, though I don’t cook with it a lot. I put it on my face overnight during the winter about twice a week–great moisturizer. I also use it on the ends of my hair as a mask when they get a little dry from straightening, and it has a few other uses as well. I’ll email you those. 🙂

I use olive oil most of the time, but coconut oil sound yummy and healthy. Yes, I love health information. I eat as clean as possible (except when I don’t) to give my body the best odds against RA.

Thanks for participating in TNT. 🙂 Loved the video. I bet Delilah is a very good jumper. I would be interested in nutritional posts. 🙂

I’d like to hear more about your healthy options! I’ve gotten to that age where I’m realizing my body doesn’t bounce back like it used to. I need to exercise more and I need to eat better so I’m interested.
P.S. Thanks for sharing my post! The Local Harvest link is actually one I found looking for organic food for me and my family.

I knew she could make it! We have a problem with fallen trees also. We’ve lost a lot, most from the Derecho of last summer.
Jodi Stone says
🙂 She’s very athletic. You have the tree problem too? It can really make walking difficult.
