I had an entirely different post planned for today and then last night Lauren from Life With Desmond posted a link on my facebook page that said WTF Wednesday Worthy. I clicked the link and read the article with my mouth open.
And then a voice that sounded a lot like Tone Loc said, “Let’s Do It.”
So back not by popular demand, but because my inner Loc is screaming, here once again is WTF/Whoo Hoo Wednesday.
Florida governor RETURNED the rescue dog he adopted for his 2010 campaign…AFTER he’d won – The Governor’s Office, Florida
Yup, you read it right. Rick Scott adopted a dog shortly after he won the republican nomination, used and campaigned with the “rescue” dog and a month after he took office, returned the dog.
His official statement?
“He was a rescue dog,” Scott said, “and he couldn’t be around anybody that was carrying anything, and so he wouldn’t get better.”
Of course he wouldn’t get better, not on his own you stupid slug. I get that you’re the freaking GOVERNOR, and may not have the time to work with him but it’s not like you can’t find a trainer to HELP the dog get better.
If I’d voted for your ass I’d be calling your office up and asking for my vote back, you filthy little toe rag.
One of the articles I researched said Rick Scott is going to be a grandfather this year.
I can picture him holding a crying baby, “Shhh, shhhh little baby,” sighs, jiggles the baby a bit “ it-won’t-stop-crying. Oh here, go back to your mother.
Whoo Hoo
Really, what would a WTF post be without a little Whoo Hoo?
This little video came across my facebook page on Sunday evening. Really, I could watch it over and over again with tears streaming down my face every time.
It’s long (7 minutes) but you’ll be hooked, I promise.
So how’s your week been? Any WTF or Whoo Hoo’s you’d like to share?
caren gittleman says
completely deplorable!
Jodi Stone says
I have words for that guy, but I shan’t share them here. 🙂

WTF indeed. It staggers belief.

worse than the romneys putting their dog on the roof of the car. smh.

OMGracious . . . YUCK to the Governor but MAJOR kudo’s to the Rosie Rescuer . . . and thanks Jodi for giving me FROG EYES AGAIN!!! 😀

As for Gov. Scott, it does not surprise me in the least! He adopted the poor dog for one reason, and one reason only. To win the election, period. He had no intention of keeping him once the election was over…too much work and no compassion for the poor pup whatsoever. As for grandchildren, yeah, he probably will hand them back to mommy the instant they start to fuss.
As for Rosie? OMG! What a sweetheart! And the puppies are so adorable!! I still have a lump in my throat! I wish I could adopt Rosie and all 5 of her precious babies! But we already have 3 dogs in a house that is barely big enough for one.
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky send friendly butt sniffs to Sampson & Delilah.

Okay so… Now I am crying! But it was a really great video and I am glad you shared it. Rosie was just so sweet and scared and no wonder! But he did the right thing and took his time and was just so patient with her. I love the creativity as well, not sure I would have thought of that. Yay for Rosie and her puppies!
As for the first story… I think this is exactly what WTF Wednesday was for, calling out morons like this governor who use dogs as campaign bargaining tools. Shameless. Sadly, many people probably will never think to ask what happened to the dog. I am so glad you have covered the story to let people know!
Jen@MyBrownNewfies says
Totally picturing you doing the Tone Loc voice right now! lol!
The governor doesn’t sound like a “dog person” maybe dumb and dumber-the dog is probably better off being returned in hopes that someone has a clue will adopt him and show him the love and care that he really needs.
Thanks for the video, today was the first day I wasn’t suppose to cry:) lol!

Yet another example of a convenience pet. Not convenient and the get rid of it.
We’ve had challenges with our girl Callie and been asked a few times if getting rid of her would be easier. Easier? Yes. Right? NO WAY! Forever and ever is our motto.
Genevieve says
Hooked is not even the word for that video! Yay, Rosie! So brave! Ditto the rescue group that helped her. Compassion close up! Whoo Hoo!
Julie says
I saw Lauren’s post yesterday and she was right, absolutely WTF worthy! Jerk.
Thanks for sharing that video – it’s so nice to see wonderful people doing wonderful things isn’t it? Warms my heart ♥

Hey Sampson, Hey Delilah, Jetty here. Hi Miss Jodi.
Mom asked me to share the following, “Don’t even get me started on the Governor!” Many of folks in the Sunshine state have STRONG, NEGATIVE feelings about him. Did you know he got in trouble for doing naughty things when he ran his company to the tune of 3 million! How did he get elected you ask? Slightly less than half the voters wonder the same. This story puts icing or orange drizzle on the cake!
We can’t watch the whoo hoo as Mom is sneaking a bit of time at the biscuit earning place.

Now see I have a different point of view. If the Governor could not keep the dog then what is wrong with it going back to rescue? Why are rescues like that? What won’t they take their dogs back? Every breeder I know will gladly take the dogs they have bred back no questions asked.
Most rescues make you sign something that says you have to give the dog back to them if you cannot keep them and you are not allowed to place the dog on your own. Most rescues I have known are very strict about it too. It sounds like the dog had a temperament that did not work in the environment it was living. Isn’t it kinder to give it back? Kudos to the Governor for not making a big deal about giving it back and having the courage to do it. The Mail is the one spinning that he adopted the dog to get elected. That seems to be an assumption on their part. (Because logically if the adoption was to gain votes, wouldn’t giving it back hurt his re-election?)
I guess I hang around with a lot of people/trainers/breeders who routinely re-home dogs when it is clear the dog is not fitting in where they are. The reasons are varied, maybe they have a health issue that keeps them from training or being good breeding stock, maybe they do not get along with kids or other dogs. They feel it is kinder to find the dog a more suitable place to live rather then keeping it in an environment that is not working for the animal.
Jodi Stone says
I agree that giving the dog back if it is best for the dog certainly okay. His reasoning was that the dog barked when someone carried something? LAME.
And why hide it? His camp would make no comment and skirted the issue. A simple statement that we tried this training or that training and it didn’t work out would have sufficed.
I think the rescue did take the dog back too, but since he wouldn’t respond to comments and address the issue, no-one really knows.
And I think most rescues have a clause that the dog must go to them (Delilah’s contract does) however wouldn’t you know fairly quickly if the dog wasn’t right for your family? Most people don’t live with a dog for a year and then give it up.
Jessica says
I wonder if this isn’t a little both/and–he may *have* realized the dog would be better off elsewhere, but didn’t want to look like a bad guy before the election.
What I would like to think is that they tried a lot of training and couldn’t work through it, so the governor’s mansion (with florists and professional event decorators and such) was just a bad fit for the dog.
But hey, I’m an optimist.

I had to go back and read the article. The election was in 2010, the dog went back sometime in 2011 (or hasn’t been in pics since the 2011 inauguration..January 2011 I suppose). This is 2013. If he got the dog for the 2010 election and it went back in early 2011, I don’t think the dog was with him that long. As I say I am around people who may keep a dog three, four years and re-home. It happens.
I really don’t see the issue here. Perhaps they could have confined the dog, but that is hardly a life for a dog. People in the rescue community seem so judgmental when someone has to give a dog back (have had friends in this situation). The breeders I have dealt with take their dogs back for whatever reason if the person can’t keep it. They don’t judge but think of what is best for the dog.
I know from my own friends that when you have to give a dog back, it is very traumatic. I don’t think people should have to share the why’s unless they are comfortable. The why’s would probably not help that rescue if it got out that they placed an dog with an unsound temperament, or what if the dog was up for adoption and then became unadoptable due to temperament? The article seems to suggest the guy got the dog to win the election. I bet it isn’t quite that simple. I guess I don’t think people always do things with bad motives. 🙂

That’s disgusting. I hate it when people take advantage of rescues willing to take their dogs back. Deplorable.
Love that video! I watched it all and am glad I did – so amazing!!!!

Between hearing you channel Tone Loc in my head and “Of course he wouldn’t get better, not on his own you stupid slug”, I was laughing out loud. I’ve been following the Guvna’s story and I agree 100% with you that the dog won’t get better without someone’s help and that was a pretty lame excuse. The hiding, though, makes it seem a bit suspicious and off.
However, I also got the impression (can’t remember where) that they had adopted another dog that was also a rescue. I just don’t know why they skirted the issue. Not everyone is built to handle a fearful dog.
Loved the video. I’ve been following Eldad’s rescues for some time now and recognized him and his methods immediately. He does absolutely amazing work. He really needs a “don’t try this at home” warning on some of his videos though. He’s special. Most of us would get chewed up and spit out if we pulled some of the stunts he does. 😉

I want to think the best of people. So I hope Governor Scott wasn’t a political opportunist adopting a dog as a campaign prop. I’ve seen this story a few places and I don’t feel I have enough information to know for sure what was going on.
But I do worry about people being shamed into never giving up a dog. I’d rather see someone rehome a dog than kill it or give it to someone irresponsible or have it live out its life at the end of a chain.
Luckily, Mr. Scott is either well-meaning or not a total jerk and the dog ended up in a better home. Yay!
And yes, I loved seeing Rosie’s story. I’d love to see how long that entire process took. But maybe I’m the only person willing to watch a 3 day video of a dog rescue? 🙂

Rick Scott was a sleazy businessman who ran a sleazy campaign and sad to say became the sleazy governor of my state…Reading this just infuriates me but does not surprise me in the least…Rosie’s story on the other hand just made my day Thank you for sharing that

That video was fantastic thank you so much for sharing!

Good God. That doesn’t surprise me a bit about Rick Scott, but could he really be such a moron as to think it wouldn’t get out–and reflect poorly on him?
That video is amazing. What a dedicated mom–she looked so nervous, and so relieved to be reunited with her little piglets!

That is just so sad, and so typical of politicians! Did the article mention if the dog found a new home?
snoopy@snoopysdogblog says
You were right about being hooked on the video – I was very concerned too when I heard the pups crying, Mum had to put it on mute for a while – I just wish the video was longer and we could see where they’re all at now 🙂 So happy they were rescued 🙂
Big wags,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Donna says
I heard about the governor, and as horrible as it is, I am so not surprised. Hope the dog found a better home where he was actually loved.
As for Rosie’s story, I had not seen the video – so thank you so much for sharing it! It reminded me a bit of Meadow, running free and having pups. But with Meadow, they caught the pups first, and tried to lure her in with them. Fear trumped motherhood however, and she just cried and cried for them, but wouldn’t come in for them.
I heard they were Lab/Vizsla crosses. Bet they all turned out to be really nice dogs. 🙂
