This is Fred.
Fred’s mother was found as a pregnant stray by a friend of my daughter. She took his mom in and cared for her and Fred and his siblings when they arrived. Fred will be 2 months old on December 20th.
Yesterday Fred went to his forever home, with my daughter, her husband and their cat, Ollie.
Last night we went over for dinner and had the opportunity to meet our newest grandkit.
My son-in-law is adorable with Fred. He was not raised with any pets, and by the time he met my daughter Ollie was already an older cat.
He won’t pick Fred up because he’s so tiny. Instead he calls to my daughter, Fred’s on the stairs, Fred’s back in his bed.
We were in the kitchen when he said, Fred’s crying.
I said, he might want to use the litter box, sometimes when they are small they cry when they have to go because they’re not sure where to go.
My daughter said, Mom says he might need the litter box, put him in it.
But he won’t pick Fred up.
So my daughter put him in the box and sure enough, he tinkled.
A short time later he cried again and I put him back in the box, I stood there for a few minutes watching him sniff, scratch and squat until he finally pooped.
I was amazed that such a tiny guy could be so particular about where he pooped.
Welcome to the family Fred George (and yes, he’s named after the Weasley twins from Harry Potter, two of my daughters are twins.)
Have you ever watched an animal take great care with something fairly ordinary? Please share.

Even when my cat could barely stand up after she had surgery, she still insisted on the litter box. I actually had to hold her upright while she went.

Yes Cats are very particular about where they do their ‘business’. They like to dig and ‘go’, then bury it. I have a little story I thought I would share about my old sheltie and a tiny kitten named Pauly.
Lad, was my childhood chum. He was so wise, so fearless and so completely dependable.
I got this tiny kitten..I was 15 at the time, Lad was 8 years old. I got the cat at night..and didn’t have a litter box or anything for him..it was winter time. He was found abandoned in the snow by a neighbour, and knowing my fondness for animals she gave him to me.
My dad went out and dug down to the sand in our driveway and got some sand and brought it in the house. We got a big box and dad ‘made a little section in the box for the sand by putting in a piece of two inch by two inch wooden stick and putting the sand on one side and we put a blanket on the other side for the kitten to sleep on. It would have to do until the stores opened in the morning and we could get a proper litter box for him. The cat and his box were put in my bedroom and we were very pleased with our make-shift arrangement.
But Pauly didn’t want to stay in the box..he climbed out repeatedly. I worried that he might not be able to climb back in as it was a fairly deep box, during the night if he had to ‘go’.
So I stationed my wise old dependable sheltie Lad at the box and told him to keep Pauly in it. When Pauly tried to climb out I told Lad “Stop him”, then with my hand I gently flipped the kitten off the top edge of the box back into it. I only did this twice..and Lad ‘understood’.
The next time the kitten tried to crawl out Lad flipped him off the edge back into the box with his nose.
Now I must add here that Lad was no friend to cats..but he was strangely gentle with the kitten. Perhaps, because he ‘knew’ the kitten was mine?
So, it went through the night..the kitten eventually gave up and went to sleep.
In the morning I woke and there was my faithful sheltie, still on duty lying by the box, and the kitten was still safely inside.
Lad and Pauly became great friends…just wanted to share this with you. A fond memory of a wonderful dog and a very sweet little kitten.

I love Fred. He’s such a good boy! Around here, Cupcake is not particular about ANYTHING. She’s clumsy and haphazard and messy!

You know I love a happy kitten story 🙂 and Fred is a great name!! I hope he finds the confidence to pick him up, because my favorite part about having a kitten is being able to pick them up and snuggle them 🙂
