At Sampson’s vet appointment last week, our vet gave him medication (Meloxicam, 1/2 tablet once per day) and said he needed to take it easy on his paw, specifically, no running or jumping which equates to no off-leash walks.
We can manage his walks.
Hubby and Sampson have been joining Delilah and I on our walks. I have Delilah on her long leash and Hubby has Sampson on another long leash.
We’ve been keeping the walks to half an hour or so and Sampson is definitely tired at the end of the walk.
The harder part is managing him in the house.
I know the medication is working because Sampson is definitely feeling better.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said, Sampson you aren’t supposed to be running.
Five minutes later Sampson, no jumping!
Of course he has a cohort who doesn’t help matters at all.
I know he’s not running and jumping when we aren’t home because my mom would tell us.
He’s doing this when we are home and he still has three full weeks of ‘taking it easy.’
Any thoughts or suggestions as how to keep a happy dog quiet?

I’m pretty sure it’s because of the Dynamic Duo influence. If Daddy takes Honey on an errand & Molly is alone with me, she goes back to being my docile lap dog. She as a very old soul. But put the 2 of them together and 95% of the day Honey is initiating crazy running, pouncing, chasing, and toy stealing and Molly is either playing along or getting highly annoyed by the baby!

Well he’d probably do the same thing to the cat. He’s feeling his happy puppy self again! LOL

The more I thought about this, the more I couldn’t help but see the irony. Having a dog that’s TOO happy? Funny.
Jodi Stone says
Exactly Al! What do you do with a happy dog? 🙂

I am going to need some of this advice too.
PS I resubscribed. I don’t know what happened to my subscription. Probably messed something up when I was updating.
Jodi Stone says
You know what? I wonder if it’s because I took the re-direct off? Maybe I need to put it back on. I will make one more post about the blog has moved and then I’ll put the redirect back. I’ll let you know once I do and you can tell me if you start getting two subscriptions. 🙂
Poor Thunder, maybe he will be less active with the cast. 🙂

When I was on “bed-rest” my peoples gave me new chew toys, allowed me on the sofa to cuddle (which became a habit afterwards, just so you know), gave me extra paper towel rolls to shred, and did a lot of easy training games – like “touch”.
Honestly, though, none of it helped. I was STILL bouncing off the walls. Wish I had better advice, other than to just hang in there.
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Toby, I appreciate it. My puppies are allowed on their own couch. I think Delilah doesn’t help the situation. Do you play much with Meadow and Leah?
Toby says
Not much, other than the occasionally game of tug.
Usually I steer clear of them because Leah bullies me, and that Meadow gives me weird vibes. I’m more of a “peoples” dog than a “dogs” dog, you know?

That’s so hard. Three whole weeks? I am really worried about having to put Shiva on bed rest one day. I don’t know if there is a limit to how long she can chew a stuffed Kong and don’t want to find out. Occupying dogs when they aren’t supposed to be playing must be so hard!
Jodi Stone says
Oh goodness Kristine, I can’t imagine how you would keep Shiva down! It is hard with Sampson because I know he’s only doing it when we are home. So I would hate to crate him when I’m home. It’s a tough situation and I still have two more weeks til his check up and possibly another week beyond that!
All things collie says
You may need to keep him on crate rest, or on a leash in the house to stop his running/jumping.
Jodi Stone says
Oh the leash is a good thought! Thank you.
jan says
I’ve only had this problem once before and I have no answers for you except a crate. In spite of Misty’s unapproved activity level she healed very nicely.
Jodi Stone says
Oooh, I don’t know if I could bear to crate him when we are home. 🙁
Jet says
Hey Sampson, Hey Delilah, Jetty here. Hi Miss Jodi.
Wowee, wow wow… so happy my buddy is feeling better already. He looked like he winked at you in the picture! Gosh, happy, happy retrievers are hard to slow down, we’ll have to ponder good suggestions….
Jodi Stone says
Wasn’t it a cute picture Jetty? I’m glad he’s feeling better too, I just need him to take it easy. 🙂

That picture of Samson winking is hysterical!
I feel your pain but have nothing to offer. Separating him from his partner in crime would help but do you really want to keep them apart. That would be sad.
When Gracie cut her paw open she got 5 or 6 stitches. I had to keep it wrapped and cleaned. I can’t tell you the hell this dog put me through! Even my dog walker was beside herself. I should make a post about it. It’s funny now but not then!
And I think you’ll look back on this situation the same way.

Hi Jodi,
Sorry I can’t give any great suggestions, but it’s cool to see Sampson is feeling that well!! 🙂
Big Wags to all
Your pal Snoopy 🙂

Sampson is such a flirt!!!! Re keeping a happy dog quiet and off of his/her feet, I must confess that I tried everything after a minor surgery without success. I finally had to get a mild sedative from the vet because the risk of Mazzie re-injuring herself was too great and it did wonders. I’m not proud of it (just like with me, I’m not a fan or over medicating her, medicating her because it’s the easy thing to do or vaccinations generally), but since she has no off button and BOUNDLESS energy, I had to make a difficult decision that thankfully worked out for the best.

I love the winking Sampson shot 🙂
Okay I know this is kind of out there and I did have to look it up because I couldn’t remember what is was called but, what about feeding them lots of turkey, you know the L-tryptophan in it makes you sleepy…I told you it was out there!!
