I have a very small kitchen. I can almost reach from the sink across the kitchen and grab a pan from the stove.
Almost.
Our previous kitchen was HUGE. I mean HUGE. It was one of those old-fashion eat in kitchens. No dining room. Just a big kitchen.
After five years Hubby and I have adjusted to cooking in a small kitchen. We can manage it, when it’s just the two of us.
Sometimes I’ve been heard to say, there are too many of us in the kitchen. Considering we have two decent sized dogs and one small cat that thinks he’s a dog.
I try hard to keep the animals on the fringe of the kitchen. They can sit right on the edge where they can catch-all the action, they just can’t enter.
It’s a daily struggle.
But well worth the effort to save a bit of sanity (not to mention stepped on paws or tails) while working.
Seriously nothing is worse than stepping backward with a full pot of boiling pasta and hearing “MEOWWWWWWWWWWW.”
When all has gone according to plan, I like to reward the participants with a treat. Sometimes I give them beef hearts or turkey hearts, but some days you want to give them a little something special.
I call these Pumple Shots.
Here’s what you’ll need:
A half and half mixture of canned pumpkin (if you’re industrious and like to make your own pumpkin good for you!) and unsweetened applesauce
a small muffin tin, or something similar
Mix the pumpkin and the applesauce together, if your freezing container is bigger than mine, feel free to layer instead of mixing. It matters not.
Fill the container with the Pumple mix and freeze.
I got these cute little forms at the Animal Rescue site.
The depth of this mold surprised me, when I pulled the treat out they were HUGE.
It mattered not. Delilah had hers in her mouth BEFORE I could snap the picture. But I would say they both enjoyed them.
I mixed these up last night and froze them overnight and it was perfect.
The mold I used was made out of silicone so the treats just popped right out, but it you are using a tin mold, you might want to add just a touch of non-stick spray.
Do your pups like frozen treats? What kinds of frozen treats do you make?
Do you feel like hopping today?
This is the Tasty Tuesday blog hop, hosted by Kol’s Notes and Sugar, the Golden Retriever.
Marina Kanavaki says
This looks yummy and I know someone in the family who would enjoy it immensely! Thank you for the recipe!
By the way no matter how big a kitchen is and even if there’s only one dog, you’re always in danger of stepping on a paw! They’re always interested in the food area, especially when someone’s cooking!!!!
😆
Jodi Stone says
You’re right on that front. Truthfully, it is usually the cat that gets stepped on because he is so small. 🙁
2 brown dawgs says
I am not one for taking the time to make treats for the dogs. 🙂 But those look so easy and yummy I may try them out! Thanks for the recipe.
Jodi Stone says
They were extremely easy, I love some of the recipes that the other Jodi comes up with, but don’t like baking when I’m not the one enjoying. ;-0
Urban Hounds says
I love how expectant they look!

Jodi Stone says
Dogs don’t get to be that size without expecting something! LOL Thanks for stopping by!
Toby says
My peoples try to keep me on the outside of the kitchen too. Usually we all behave now (we didn’t always) but sometimes if something smells really good and we just can’t help ourselves but pester the peoples, we are closed out of the kitchen by a baby gate. “We” is usually “Me” since the girls always behave.
Jodi Stone says
Well they probably don’t give you enough food, I mean who wouldn’t beg at the gate? Goodness, they don’t even give you a cake on your birthday!
Toby says
I think you’re right. I think they put more in the girl’s dishes, I mean, it takes them a heck of a lot longer to eat than it takes me. That means they got more, right?
All things collie says
Does the pumpkin cause loose stools? I’ve had that problem with my dogs in the past.
Jodi Stone says
Not in my experience, it is a good form of fiber and helps firm their stool (at least that’s what I’ve been told.)
Thanks for stopping by!
jet says
Hey Sampson, Hey Delilah, Jet here. Hi Miss Jodi.
Everybody has winning ideas today, we can’t transfer them fast enough into my Jet’s Journal of Tasty Treats! (I actually do not have a journal, but, gosh, that title sounds worthy of one, right?) Mom appreciates the mold!!!
Jodi Stone says
Maybe mom should do that Jetty, she could sell it on her site as a little e-book!
SUGAR: Golden Woofs says
Woof! Woof! LOVE pumpkins. We r also adjusting to our cooking environment (its temporary so making the most of it0. Great recipe. Golden thanks for sharing. Happy Tasty Tuesday. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
Jodi Stone says
The less work the better, especially if you have a small kitchen, right Sugar?
Pamela says
I make frozen treats from a mix of plain yogurt and peanut butter. They’d look adorable in your little mold.
Lucky pups.
Honey is rock solid at staying on the rug out of the way when I’m cooking. Every so often I give her a little piece of cheese. But only if she’s lying on the rug. If she comes anywhere near me I ignore her. Yep, she figured that one out pretty quickly.
Jodi Stone says
I would never have thought to combine those two Pamela, what a great idea! I’ve tried that with Delilah but as soon as a piece of food comes out, she’s up and ready to have at it.
Maybe I should send her to you….
Kirby the Dorkie says
Haha! We has a big kitchen but I has learned to wait in the dining room cos mama is always goin here an there. My cat sisters still gets stepped on!
What a cute mold!
Jodi Stone says
Well then you are a very well-behaved puppy Kirby. I’m very impressed.
The mold is cute!
Kirsten says
What a great idea! But do they really like them? I think Fozzie and Lamar might turn their noses up at them…or at least Fozzie would. Blue and Brownie would have engulfed them, I’m sure.
I like Pamela’s idea with peanut butter–I am certain they’d like THAT! Or maybe take your recipe, and add PB to that. Love the treat mold!
Jodi Stone says
They really do like them. They’ve had both ingredients frozen in their kongs, but they’ve never had THAT much of it. They are lucky to get a teaspoon full in the Kong, so it took Sampson a minute but they both ate it and waited for more. 🙂
Kristine says
Does Bob the cat also like the pumpkin treats? It always amuses me when cats turn out to be as big into begging as their canine counterparts. Ours always looks like he’s trying very hard not to be interested in our dinner, but he just can’t help himself.
Our new kitchen is a lot bigger than our old, galley-style one. It makes it easier for Shiva to sneak in unnoticed.
Jodi Stone says
You know Kristine, I’m guilty of not giving any of that particular treat to Bob the cat. For one thing he wasn’t hawking around when I gave it to them and for another I didn’t want to give him that whole huge treat. I could try breaking a toe off of one of the treats to see if Bob the cat likes them.
Yes the bigger kitchens are great for sneaking. 🙂
Tanya @ Mazzie Takes Manhattan says
I am IN LOVE with that tray!!!! Am going to order one ASAP!!!! And trust me, your kitchen is palatial (at least relative to my closet of a kitchen in the city).
Jodi Stone says
I hope they still have them Tanya, I got it a few years back when I wanted to make muffins for someone’s birthday.
Do you have a teeny tiny kitchen?
Tanya @ Mazzie Takes Manhattan says
They are still available and I got 2! Thanks so much for turning me on to them. LOVE the idea!
And yes, my kitchen is TEENY, tiny. It’s a galley kitchen, which is common in the city. I kid you not, if Mazzie and I are both in the kitchen, there isn’t room for anyone else, 2 or 4 legged!
Jodi Stone says
Wow that is a small kitchen!
Glad you got the molds, I think I should probably order a second one myself!
Kolchak, Felix & Jodi says
That mold is adorable. I love it and I want one just like it. Those treats sound really tasty too. I’m sure the dogs here would be pretty much in love with them!
Jodi Stone says
It makes a pretty decent sized treat Jodi. I hope you can still find the mold. Yes, your dogs would definitely love those treats and you can basically make it with anything, it is more like a pupsicle.
yuki and rocket says
those look really tasty, i’ve never frozen applesauce before, we usually use yogurt-i think we’ll give this recipe a try!

If you do Yuki and Rocket, let me know how you like it. Thank you for stopping by.
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
Yummy and how easy and I love the paw print shape 🙂
Jessica says
Silas isn’t too bad about being underfoot in the kitchen. Unless there’s butter out. He does beg for food at the table, though.
I wonder how he’d feel about the pumpkin/applesauce mix. We usually give him pumpkin with a little peanut butter in his Kong. (Although lately I’ve been being the meanest mom ever and giving him pureed veggies with his peanut butter.)
Jen@MyBrownNewfies says
These are so cute and festive!!
Sherman is a pain when I am in the kitchen cooking! He always has to lay in front of an appliance and it is always the one I need to get in!
Clowie says
I like to be in the kitchen – so that I can help!
Long Life Cats and Dogs says
The treats look great, although Litchi still refuses to eat anything that isn’t meat. Maybe she’ll change her mind now that we are going into summer and a cool item might go down well!
PS – the mix up on address details in my last post has been rectified in the current one. We are hoping that your “heart like a dog” will find it possible to forgive us – please!! 🙂
Doggy's Style says
Jodi,
I would love to make those for Doggy, but since pumpkin puree is rare commodity in here I much rather make a pumpkin pie for me. I got 4 cans yesterday, that’s all the pumpkin puree I’ll get this year unless I go to the states and bring more.
SassyKassy says
At our house, I call it the Shih Tzu – Shuffle, as in, I try not to pick my foot up too high or I will crush one of the kids! lol. They are always underfoot if there’s a chance something drops on the floor, whether edible or not! I’ve never tried frozen treats so now you’ve got me thinking I will, especially since the baby, Honey, is wackadoodle for broken ice cubes. The elder Molly has pretty much outgrown her love of ice, but if Honey is getting some, Molly sometimes, unenthusiastically, waits her turn for some as well. Too funny.
