Well there’s good news and bad news.
Whenever anyone says to me, there’s good news and there’s bad news, what do you want first? I always choose the bad news.
I figure, let’s get this over with.
Today I’ve got good news and bad news. What do you want first?
Too late, I’m making the decision for you. You’re getting the bad news.
I heard back from my attorney friend today. His legal opinion is that adding “Just” to an already trademarked “Be The Dog” could be considered trademark infringement.
Poop, thwarted again.
The way I see it I have two options. I can contact someone at the Be The Dog website and see about working on a collaboration or I can do my own thing.
I’m a do my own thing kind of girl….BUT….I really like Just Be The Dog. (Decisions, decisions.)
I’ve gotten some great advice from many of you. Not the least being choosing a blog name should be well thought out.
I have put a lot of thought into this and I feel strongly that the blog should somehow be associated with my name.
I sort of feel like an egomaniac saying that, but if I use my name, then I can write about whatever I want. I’m not pinned down to writing strictly about my life with Sampson and Delilah.
And then I discovered there’s another Jodi Stone who’s also a writer. No, no, it’s not the lady bug Jodi Stone, it’s a another one! Yes by golly, there’s three of us….all writers. This Jodi Stone has a facebook page and writes stories about princesses.
That all kind of sounds like bad news, but I wanted to give you that information so I could share some good news.
Here are two Jodi Stone names I’ve been considering:
thisisjodistone.com
youvereachedjodistone.com
I also thought I could stick with:
lifewithsampsonanddelilah.com
And then I kind of got a bit creative and thought of these two:
doinitdoggiestyle.com
whatsthebark.com
It’s a pretty major decision and I want to make sure it’s the right one for me.
When I started this blog I had no idea what I was doing, they said I needed a name and so I used mine. I didn’t use my imagination because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to blog about.
As it turns out, using my own name with the Life with Sampson and Delilah tagline, worked out pretty well. Because what I’ve come to realize is I’m selling myself as a writer, a speaker and I hope someday….a leader.
I’ve always said I’m technologically challenged, but if I’m reading all of your comments correctly, my blog will stay the same, it will just move over to the new website. When you go to this blog site, it will just be hosted somewhere else.
So what do you think? Did you like any of the names? Should I have a name the website contest?
Oh and speaking of contests, have you seen the Something Wagging Match Game? It’s pretty darn cool and yours truly is participating. If you haven’t checked it out, well what are you doing now? Head on over, Pamela’s giving away some awfully good swag. 🙂
Jen says
LMAO, I love doinitdoggiestyle.com:) That made me laugh!
Seriously though I hear what you are saying. Sometimes I want to change the name of my blog, I have been thinking a lot about that lately. When I started 2 years ago I thought of the first non-creative name that came into my head. MyBrownNewfies-duh! Now I look at where I am, yes I blog mostly about the dogs but I also blog about the kids, photography, blogging, life and basically anything else that comes to into my head and sometimes the name just doesn’t work. aclusterfuckofablog.com would work better for me. (sorry for swearing)
I like thisisjodistone.com it goes with what you are looking to do.
Jodi Stone says
LOL Jen, I laughed my butt off too, but a quick google of it showed me what my readers might be in for!
The blog name is a tough one, I think once you establish readers though they won’t care if you are writing about the dogs every day or not. There are days that I really don’t mention mine and I think people still come back the next day. 🙂
I can change the name of the blog but not the URL. It is definitely one of the harder decisions.
Thanks for weighing in.
Jan says
I think doinitdoggiestyle.com is hilarious. But you will probably draw a lot of perverts.
Jodi Stone says
I know I will Jan, I googled it! LOL but it did make me laugh.
Bassas Blog says
I suggest: bethejodi.com 🙂
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Bassa!
Donna and the Dogs says
Hmmmm…sorry that Just Be The Dog is too close to Be The Dog….that’s too bad. What are the websites of the other two Jodi Stones? Are there middle initials, anything like that, that can set each of you apart? Do you have a middle initial you could use?
Jodi Stone says
I use my maiden name of E. People then spell it Jodie Stone. 🙁 It is a dilemma Donna, but it will work itself out. 🙂
Al says
Jodi, how about barksandbytes.com
Jodi Stone says
I like that Al. It’s a good one.
Peggy @Peggy's Pet Place says
Nothing’s ever simple, is it? I’ve seen it done like writerjodistone or jodistonewrites. or could you somehow combine it with sampson and delilah? Tricky!
Jodi Stone says
I like that Peggy! Thanks for stopping by.
Mazzie @ Mazzie Takes Manhattan says
Sorry about the bad news Jodi!!!! Onward and upward. Maybe combine some of your dog-related suggestions with your name (doinitdoggiestylewithjodistone.com,
whatsthebarkbyjodistone.com, etc.)? And then when you commit to writing more extensively about non-dog topics, you could come up with domain names that reflect those topics and combine them with your name as well? Agreed that the blog name change is a COLOSSAL decision. Good luck!
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Tanya, it will work out the way it is supposed to. One day it will just be there and I will know it’s right. I like doinitdoggiestylewithjodistone.com but that’s a whole lot of typing!! LOL It is HUGE decision but it will happen.
Doggy's Style says
It’s sucks that you cannot use Just Be The Dog. I really like whatsthebark.com, however doinitdoggiestyle.com is catchy and funny, yes it could draw plenty of perves, but if you think business wise when you are trying to sell advertising space on your blog what counts are the hits, nobody cares what the person who clicked on your blog was looking for, a click it’s a click, then the people who trully wanna read what you post will keep doing it regardless of the name, too many things to consider but all the end whatever decision you take will be the right, people maybe draw in by the name they’ll stay by the content of the site.
Jodi Stone says
I agree Doggy, it would be perfect, but I haven’t yet given up on it. 🙂 I am devious and have a plan. Yes, I always have a plan. Thanks for that aspect it, I didn’t think of it that way, but you are right. It doesn’t matter how they get here just as long as they come back. 🙂
Kristine says
It’s too bad none of the names you wanted originally will work out. I would be so frustrated! I see now how lucky I am to have such an odd name.
No matter what you choose I know it will reflect who you are and be a great asset for your future success. Good luck!
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Kristine I appreciate it! Every time I hear a new one, I love it and then I have to think about the drawbacks!! It is HUGE, why didn’t I just choose Rescued Insanity? LOL
snoopys@snoopysdogblog says
Hi Jodi,
I like thisisjodistone.com it leaves it totally open to be whatever you want it to be – even if you change your mind in the future about domain names you can still just re-direct whichever one you choose now, for example, if you went with a Dog one now and later wanted another as your main site, so it will still work out 🙂
Good luck,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Snoopy, I’m not that great with the technology and my child that is currently lives in CA. I’m sure the right name will come along!
Lynn says
Have a naming contest!
Jodi Stone says
I might, but then what if everyone likes one and I don’t? LOL
shoes says
I am not sure what post you mentioned jodistonewrites (I think that’s what you had as one option) but I like it.
I gave some thought to my blog name but no thought whatsoever to my user name of “Shoes”. I picked it because of the blog name. I wish I would have come up with something better.
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Shoes and guess what? I like Shoes, it’s a reflection of your blog and I think it works. 🙂
2browndawgs says
I am days and days behind…lol. Whatever you pick consider what the spam blocker will think of it. For example doingitdoggietyle.com will probably get you put in spam more than you care to have it happen. I know when Honey the Great Dane tries to comment, 9 out of 10 times she is put in spam. I think her site is something like bighoney.com. She laughs that the spam filter thinks it is a porn site…lol.
Pamela Webster (@S_Wagging) says
Choosing your blog name is so personal that I think you have to go with your heart. But I will something regarding your online identity.
I try, whenever possible, to identify myself as Pamela Douglas Webster. If you google that name, you’ll see me come up all over the place. I don’t have as good luck when you type Pamela Webster.
Maybe you want to use Jodi Edwards Stone to maintain your unique identity among the crowd of Jodi Stones out there. Of course, you could also start a club and give each other “street” names. 🙂
Jodi Stone says
You think so differently than I do Pamela, which is a really good thing because I sometimes don’t think of these kinds of things. Maybe my street name could be my Captain Underpants name, I could write under Tiddly Widdle Pinks! LOL
katherine says
whenever you decide on the name, see if you can make it into a shorter abbreviation! and one that’s easier to remember. nobody wants to have to type in a long URL these days. instead of lifewithsampsonanddelilah something like lwsnd for example
