Have you ever bought your dog the cheese or peanut butter stuffed bones?
We bought a lot of them for Sampson when he was a puppy and going through his teething periods. As he got larger the bones did as well. Consequently I have at least six of them lying around the house.
Sometimes the dogs will play or chew on them, most notably Delilah when it is time to go to bed. I kid you not, I caught her standing with her feet on my dresser in the middle of the night trying to get her bone. 🙂
Even though Sampson and Delilah get a healthy stuffed Kong for a treat at night, I am still trying to help them each lose a few pounds. The dilemma being what to give them for a treat with a lower amount of calories.
I decided I’ll use these bones and stuff them with something tasty!
I start off in the morning with two bones about the same size and stuff about a tablespoon or so of pumpkin in one end and stick the bone in the freezer.
When I get home at night I take the bone out and fill it 3/4 or so with non-fat vanana (vanilla/banana) yogurt.
I frost the end with more pumpkin.
And stick a piece of fruit (in this case pineapple) in the end.
I stand the two bones on the frozen end so the yogurt and the freshly added pumpkin settle a bit and stick them in the freezer for about 3 hours.
Sampson who is usually coaxed from his spot on the couch to get his treat, jumped up, ran into the bedroom and jumped on the bed in anticipation of his treat.
It’s easy, inexpensive, healthy and above all tasty. This is the Tasty Tuesday Blog Hop hosted by Kol’s Notes and Sugar the Golden Retriever. You can get your linky code at either of their pages.
Delilah doesn’t care that the bone is longer than her tongue, she works and works at it until she gets all the goodness out.

What a great alternative to those yucky commercial stuffed bones that are full of corn syrup and junk! Fabulous idea Jodi!
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Jodi, it is a nice alternative for them as opposed to the kong.
Julie says
You should make some popsicles for yourself while you’re at it 🙂 Those sound tasty!!
Jodi Stone says
They probably would be pretty good! LOL
Donna and the Dogs says
Boy Jodi, my dogs are jealous!! Looks yum for people too! (except the bone part of course!)
Jodi Stone says
LOL Donna, they are definitely spoiled dogs.
Bassas Blog says
Those look good enough to eat! 🙂
Jodi Stone says
Yes Bassa! Ask the tall person to make you one!
Bassas Blog says
I will Jodi. Because of my arrangement with the butcher I get lots of bones that could be re-used in this way 🙂

I love treats that make the dogs think they are really working for their food. It stimulates their brains.
BTW. You and I seem to be among the minority of people who know the difference between “lying” and “laying” around…. Good for you and your English teachers of yore.
Jodi Stone says
Lying and laying is a tough one. I have to tell you I discover so many grammar and spelling errors as I’m reading other people’s blogs. I never know what to do, should I point it out or let it ride? Usually I just let it ride. 🙂
Georgia Little Pea says
Jeez, I’d like to be a dog in your household. If Georgia knew the kind of stuff other dogs get to eat and at all times of the day, she’d be packing her bags too.
Jodi Stone says
Poor little Georgia, perhaps the cushion could be convinced to stuff a kong for her?

What a great and tasty idea!!!
Jodi Stone says
Thank you, I’ve been trying to figure out a way to incorporate it into my diet! LOL

Great idea. Ours have been really happy with the elk antlers, but they are pricey. I have no doubt that Sampson and Delilah get all the goodness out of those bones…lol.
Jodi Stone says
The antlers are very pricey. I like using the frozen Kongs most of the times and make the bones a once or twice a week treat. I notice they are most inclined to chew on the bones throughout the rest of the week AFTER they’ve been stuffed. 😉
2browndawgs says
And the benefit to the kongs is that they have a little “give” and are less likely to cause dental issues. Storm likes that black kong bone and doesn’t even need it stuffed…lol.
Jodi Stone says
Good to know, I will have to check those out!
Jen says
Yum and so creative!!!!
Jodi Stone says
I figure they might get bored with the same ole, same ole. 😉 I know I like a change of treat now and then.
Mazzie @ Mazzie Takes Manhattan says
Super smart idea. Great way to reuse/repurpose what’s left of the raw frozen marrow bones I give Mazzie’s after she’s done with them. So green/eco friendly!
Jodi Stone says
Plus since you are filling it, you know what’s in there!! You could even put her supplements in there!
Kristine says
I just discovered yogurt as a Kong stuffer recently and it is awesome! Not only is it cheaper than peanut butter but it freezes super fast and it is so easy to find sugar-free varieties. I love the idea of stuffing it into old bones as well, we have about a million of those things floating around our house!
Your dogs have quite the treat schedule. I hope they know how lucky they are! 😉
Jodi Stone says
I know you don’t have this problem with the Shivester, but they are also low in fat. I know that her metabolism can handle the peanut butter but not my two chubbies! 🙂 If she seems to be hungry a lot, the pumpkin can help her feel full.
Kari says
looks yummy!
Jodi Stone says
They don’t complain. LOL
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
Great idea!
I finally found all your comments, I have replied to all of them, I think 😉 so I hope you can view all of them. I really don’t understand why you keep going to spam, crazy WordPress!
Jodi Stone says
I’ve had this happen with a couple of WP blogs and these are blogs I comment on regularly too! But I’ve also found once you’ve unspammed me, it should be ok.
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
Seems to be okay now because here you are right where you should be 🙂
snoopys@snoopysdogblog says
They look yummy!!
I have the same bones, but my Mum stuffs them with raw Carrots, I bite the bits off that I can and then I spend ages getting the rest of the Carrot out, keeps me busy for hours, but I think it only takes Mum a few seconds to wedge the Carrots in 🙂
Wags to all
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Jodi Stone says
I’d like to see a picture of how your mom does that Snoopy. I’m trying to picture it, but I just can’t. As long as you like them, I say whatever works!
