Just about a week ago I posted about a new command I’m working with Delilah on. I am calling it check in and all it means is come to me and I will give you a treat.
I’ve been trying to carry some really tasty treats such as duck and venison. Yesterday I had some left-over beef bologna in the fridge so I grabbed a few pieces for our walk.
Pay Dirt!
We happened to run into our friend with her dog Brady and Brady’s friend Kodak. Right about in the center of the woods Sampson, Brady and Kodak darted off after something real or perceived (I’m not sure which.) Since Delilah was on the 15 foot leash I was hesitant to let her run through the trees dragging the leash. I decided to take a chance and let her off-leash. I called her to me and unclipped her.
Nothing happened.
I said, “Go ahead, run.” She stayed right with us.
Not wanting to spend my whole Sunday looking for her, I only kept her off leash for about a minute or so, then I clipped her back on and continued our walk.
It was (IMO) successful and I want to keep her training positive.
Today we had another successful walk, I did drop the leash (accidentally) a couple of times and instead of panicking, I sang “Check in!”
Boom! She came right to the bologna me.
She also did something else today that she doesn’t usually do.
Our field has had some trouble with teenagers/young adults making campfires. From the debris we’ve found at the field they are gathering around the fire, drinking alcohol and baking potatoes.
As she is almost always about 15 feet in front of me, she spotted and snagged the potato well before I did. Of course she picked it up.
I said, drop it, leave it.
She dropped the potato and continued into the woods without missing a beat.

Good girl Delilah! (Bet it didn’t have any butter on it anyways)
Nope, I’m pretty sure it was a plain old potato. It might not have even been cooked. LOL
Hey DELIAH…. I can HEAR you singing that SONG…
My momma has a furst name..it’s O S C A R… My Momma has a Last name..It’s MAYER
… Oscar Mayer has a way with B O L O G N A .
sing that baby again girrrrrrl…
Ah Frankie (and Ernie) you read my mind. We were signing the same thing over here!!
A good treat is key! I have to give bologna a try with Leroy!
Drinking alcohol and baking potatoes? What’s up with that?
They also love roast beef. I get it when it is rare and I have the deli shave it. 🙂 LOL they love luncheon meat!
I agree with Delilah that bologna tastes better than a potato!
I don’t know Mary Ann, load a potato with butter, sour cream and cheese and I might just choose that over the bologna. 🙂
You rock ladies!! Good work 🙂
Thanks Misty!!
Ah, the power of mystery meat. You guys are doing so well.
Those decadent kids are baking potatoes?
Those kids are crazy for even being up there at night. I will tell you there isn’t much that would get me up there!
Bologna or not, what a good girl! Well done Delilah (and Jodi of course).
Thank you Georgia! We do try. :0
tasty treats always seems to the the trick, at least to lure them at first.
Well I try to carry tasty treats, right now they are loving that bologna. 🙂
Wow!!!!!!! Well done Delilah and you Jodi!
Thanks Bassa, I bet the tall guy doesn’t have to lure you with bologna.
Hey Sampson, Hey Delilah, Jet here. Hi Miss Jodi.
S-U-C-C-E-S-S! Hey Mom? Can we copy Miss Jodi????
LOL Jetty anytime you are in the area, I promise to share our bologna with you (and JJ too!)
Excellent! Maybe changing up the command was a break through for her?
I think it hasn’t been polluted by me. Unlike all the other words I use…..LOL
Mmm…nothin like processed luncheon meats!
Well it wasn’t my first choice, but Hubby didn’t eat it and I didn’t want it to go to waste. 🙂
CONGRATULATIONS! I can’t believe that she dropped the potato. And so great that you’re making progress with your new command. Perfecting recall can be so hard with some dogs (mine included given her prey drive and hound nose). Since you’re working with your dogs off leash frequently, have you ever thought about getting those Tagg attachments for their collars?
I can’t believe she dropped it either! Then she ate something in the field today. LOL I’m not sure I’ve heard of the Tagg attachments, I do have tags with their name, my name and my cell phone number on it though. I will have to check out the taggs.
You go Delilah!! Love the name. Love the dog. (And Sampson too)
Aw Big Al, you’re very sweet. She really is a good girl. 🙂
Jodi!
We love your blog and will in the next couple of days be mentioning you on our collie blog! Keep up the great work and we love the potato being dropped without missing a beat! LOL
Thanks Collies! Ut oh, should I be worried? I know what a mischief maker that Ginger is. 🙂
I was very pleased she dropped the potato, I do think it was raw though, which could have been the main factor. LOL
YAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY! Great job, Delilah and Jodi!
BTW, don’t forget to keep looking for new goodies. You don’t want her to get ho hum about the baloney. Our magic treat is liverwurst.
Oooooh, liverwurst what a great idea Pamela! I bet they would love that. They love really rare roast beef too. 🙂
