I love Drew Barrymore. So when I saw the link “Barrymore’s Bump” I couldn’t help myself, I had to click.
As I read the article I found out that Drew’s bump wasn’t a baby, it was a puppy. She had the puppy tucked up under her shirt (I assume) to keep the puppy from being frightened by all the people. Once I realized it was a puppy, I cringed.
You know when a movie comes out that has a dog in it, how sales of those dogs go sky rocketing? Yeah, and then a bunch of those same dogs wind up in shelters because people really just have no clue what kind of work goes into a dog?
Well I got a bit nervous thinking, what if Drew’s puppy garners that same reaction? We already have so many dogs in shelters, we certainly don’t need hundreds (if not thousands) more.
The other reason I cringed was the L.A. Boutique mentioned in the article, “Bark n’ Bitches“. Naturally me being me, I jumped to the conclusion this was a store that sold puppies and we all know how I feel about stores that sell puppies. So I googled them and found their website.
The first thing I noticed on the website, was a video. The picture on the video showed a dog in a crate. Aha! My suspicions were confirmed. And then I read a little further, all of the dogs offered for sale at the Boutique are rescued.
The Boutique sells dog beds, collars, and dog carriers, among other things. Their food and treats are holistic and organic and the best part is the proceeds from the sales from the store, funds the rescue of dogs.
So then I had to click on the video, which actually follows the owner, (Shannon von Roemer) as she goes to a Los Angles shelter and rescues two dogs. Of course there are many more there that she can’t rescue and you can hear the emotion in her voice as she talks about these sweet souls.
So Drew Barrymore’s new puppy is a shelter dog.
Hopefully this means that people who might be interested in getting a dog will follow Drew’s lead and adopt from a shelter or a rescue.
In my opinion, it’s better than a movie. 🙂

Drew Barrymore always struck me as the sort of person who would rescue a dog instead of buy one. She seems to have a soft heart like that. I hope her shelter action spurs some action among her fans to adopt instead of buy!
Jodi Stone says
From what I read she is very supportive and a huge advocate for shelter dogs. Let’s hope!
Frankie Furter and Ernie says
Let’s hope so!!! THAT would be grrrreat.
Jodi Stone says
It sure would Frankie!

This is such a welcome turnaround from the stories of Brittany and Paris and their pet shop impromptu purchases of a short few years ago. For the most part I think people should get their pets wherever they want after they have done some research on the kind of pet that suits their lifestyles, but people in the public eye do have an obligation to be role models for their fans.
Jodi Stone says
I agree Jan, I really cringe when I hear of a celebrity getting a dog. It just gets those puppy mills churning.
I just wish more people purchased from responsible breeders, when they purchase pures.

We can hope that this sends a spree of rescue adoptions! Isn’t it nice when your fears are unfounded? 🙂

I love to be proven wrong, especially about this!!

I’m not much of a fan of Drew Barrymore, but I like her just a little more now! But I’m like you when I see a new movie come out with a particular breed–The worst (aside from Goldens of course) was 101 Dalmations and My Dog Skip–Both dogs are really not the best dogs for kids and well…Well, you know where I’m going with this. But I was glad to read that even George Clooney got a dog from a rescue. Whatever it takes to give those that need a 2nd chance a chance works for me!! 🙂
Jodi Stone says
I agree Kim (not about the Drew Barrymore part) 🙂 But when those movies come out and kids think the dogs are so cute and the parents have no real idea of what they are getting into.
Let’s hope more dogs get rescued soon!!

It’s great celebrities use their fame for goodness instead of evil. 😉 (Anyone else remember Get Smart?
Jodi Stone says
I used to love that show!! Yes, they should use their fame for goodness. 🙂

It is great that she is rescuing a dogs, but it is too bad that the woman from the shop took only the puppies and a retriever looking dog. The pitbull mixes had to stay. 🙁
Jodi Stone says
I know, I felt bad about that too. I suppose she can only rescue so many and probably goes by what she knows people will adopt.
Unfortunately the pitties have that huge stigma of being vicious. The world is a sad, sad place especially for some dogs.
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
I love Drew too, I especially loved her with Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in Charlies Angels.
That is great she adopted a rescue and the shop is kind of cool.
Great post Jodi!
Jodi Stone says
I loved her in that movie too! I’m so glad she rescued.

I agree about the movie dogs – you see this amazing dog in a movie, doing all sorts of amazing things, and people seem to forget that this dog has been really REALLY trained well, probably for a few years before they actually start being an acting-dog. It’s like those people who say, “It’s so frustrating, my dog just won’t listen to me!”, and then look shocked when you ask, ‘Have you taught him what the command means?’. Nope, they’re not born with the knowledge of what ‘sit’ means.
Jodi Stone says
You’re so right, people really have no idea what goes into a well-trained dog. People will say to me, “Your dogs are so good.” I respond with, “That’s a lot of time and money right there, they don’t just grow this way.” “-)
Donna and the Dogs says
Oh, good Jodi – you turned what I at first thought was going to infuriate me into a good news blog post. Thanks! 🙂
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Donna, initially I was infurtiated myself!
Kristine says
It’s about time animal rescue has become a Hollywood trend! That would be worth every movie ever made. If anyone could do it, it would be Drew.
Jodi Stone says
I agree Kristine!

That’s pretty cool. Celebs have such a platform from which to make change; I’ve always wished they would use it more. This news makes me like Drew as well. Much more fun than another celeb baby bump story!
Jodi Stone says
I wish more of them would use their platforms for great causes!

Jodi you should do the same thing here! You were talking about opening a no-kill shelter, what a fab idea to turn it into a chic dog boutique to re-home shelter dogs for adoption! I don’t think, “Bark n’ Bitches” sells the dogs, she probably just passes on the adoption fee the original shelter charged [updated vaccinations, spaying/neuturing, license, etc.]. I love this idea! [I do understand why she only took the dog/puppies that she thinks will be adopted rather than the pitties. It’s a sad reality.] Thanks for linking this website, it has me excited to even try this myself!
