Pig's Ears….Day Three Hundred, Fifty Seven

November 22, 2011 By Jodi

Yesterday when I picked the dogs up from daycare I stopped for a quick chat with Sara and Sue  (Sara’s mom.)  The Mellow Mutt has these awesome little dog hitches attached to the wall.  If you’ve never seen or used them, let me tell you they rock.

The hitch is designed so you can hook the looped section of your leash onto the hook and you have your hands free, but your dog can only go to the end of their leash.  I use this hook a LOT when I pick up the dogs and need to keep Delilah from shopping. 😉

Sampson usually walks around, checks out all the baskets and goes to wait by the door.  As excited as he is to go to daycare, he is just as ready to go home when I get there.

We had been chatting a few minutes when Sue said, “Look at him.”

I looked over, and yup there he was standing by the door looking out.

Sue said, “No, look at him.”

As I looked again, Sampson looked back at me and wagged his tail and then I noticed the pig’s ear in his mouth.

While we were chatting Sampson had gone into the office and taken a pig’s ear, that Sue’s dog, Mabel had left on her little bed. 🙂

Sue very generously allowed Sampson to keep the ear and she gave one to Delilah too!

So Sampson lay down on the floor and enjoyed his treat before we went home.

Delilah wouldn’t lie down, instead she ate hers standing up.

Silly dog.

I am sure Mabel left the treat there to share with others. 🙂

That’s so funny, and so is 2browndawgs comment! Those dogs look like they are having the time of their lives.

Ewwwwww, so gross. Felix got a pig’s ear exactly once. It was a gift fro my Mom, he got salmonella from it and he vomited for two days straight…never again.

Sampson sure look cute with ’em though!

They don’t normally get the pig’s ears, because I worry about pancreatitis, but once in a while I give in. 🙂

We use to give our jack fresh pig ears when my mom would pick out a cow and swine for all those dinners to come. Tails, ears, and the occasional tongue were treats for the pups. I can still remember the smell of those things when the dogs chewed on them! 😛 They have probably gotten much better in time! Sampson certainly doesn’t mind if there is a smell! 🙂

Did it smell bad? I can’t imagine giving it fresh, I have a hard enough time with the necks. 🙂

Rosy and Dexter get pig’s ears as a special treat sometimes – they love them!! I find them rather nasty to handle but try not to think about it. 🙂

You’re right, I don’t care for the feel of them. I use to give them frequently but heard it caused pancreatitis, so now like you it is only on occasion.

I can’t take the smell of pig’s ears so are my dogs deprived?

You’re dogs, deprived? I don’t think so Jan! LOL it is a matter of preference, I’m sure they get lots of lovely treats.

Nice! Sampson is a little thief, is he? Oddly, I don’t know if I have ever given my dog a pig’s ear. Are they stinky?

To me they have a slight odor and a somewhat waxy smell, but otherwise I don’t find them to be offensive at all, especially not compared to something like hooves….:P

Dogs just love those ‘things’ sitting or standing, don’t they? I don’t let our dogs have them because I can’t get over what they are, but I know they wish I’d change my mind! 🙂

I have to say that I’m a little icked out by pigs ears too…my poor dogs are so deprived by their veggie mom 🙂

Glad your kids got to have something yummy though. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Cheyenne and Riva say mmmmmm, love those pig ears, although I rarely buy them.

I tried the Yumkin and they loved it so I will be adding that to their diet more regularly and did you say it can be frozen in a Kong?

ps I am determined to get caught up on eveyones posts 😉

I know, I very rarely buy them.

I’m glad the girls loved the Yumkin, yes it can be frozen in a Kong, you will just need to set the Kong in something in order to keep it from dripping out before it freezes. (The yogurt can sometimes be a bit runny.)

Once I fall behind, it takes forever to catch up!
