I was noticing today some different ways my dogs communicate to us.
Delilah barks when I am in the kitchen preparing her meals, she is communicating her need to be fed.
When the water bowl is empty the dogs will use their paw to scratch the bowl, communicating their need for water.
When Sampson wants attention, he will put his head on my knee and look up at me with his big, soulful eyes.
When someone he loves comes to the house, Sampson will “Roooo” his joy and prance up and down in anticipation.
When the dogs have to go out, they will run to the door and if we aren’t quick enough, they will bark or run back to us and then back to the door.
When they want to come in from outside, they bark “Hey open up.”
When Delilah is bored…..
She brings me her bone and wants me to hold it while she chews it. 🙂
Who says dogs can’t communicate, you just need to learn to understand what they are saying.
Kolchak & Jodi says
Excellent thought! Not all dogs communicate alike either. Kolchak is very vocal and I can even distinguish what he wants depending on the sound he makes. Felix, on the other hand, is really more of a quiet communicator. You have to watch his body language to know what he needs.
Jodi Stone says
Your very right, Delilah is a lot more vocal than Sampson, except she hasn’t gotten the rooing down. 😉
As long as their human knows what they need, then it doesn’t matter how they communicate!
Big Al says
Really cute. They’re better communicators than we are.
Jodi Stone says
Ain’t that the truth!

They are great communicators. The trick is to be able to communicate back. 🙂
Jodi Stone says
I haven’t mastered that. 🙂
Frankie Furter says
When I want somethingy… I give my mom or dad… THE look… and if that doesn’t work.. FAST ENOUGH.. I BARK at them. Works like a Charm.
Jodi Stone says
That’s because YOU are a great communicator Frankie!
Donna and the Dogs says
How sweet that she wants you to hold the bone for her. 🙂
Jodi Stone says
LOL, she wants interaction..she is hoping I will take her for a walk. 😉
Kim @ Golden Pines says
You’re so right, our pups really do find a way to let you know what they want!! I just wish I knew what the puppy was thinking…. 🙂
Enjoy your Sunday!!
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Kim, I hope your Sunday was awesome!
I bet Todd is thinking, how long before I grow to the size of the rest of these guys! 😉

Great post. I recognise many of the examples. I also think it’s fascinating how people communicate, especially my little person. He uses one word that is absolutely irresistible to his mother and impossible to ignore. It is the word ‘De’ which is a shortened version of the Georgian word for mother. I probably hear it several hundred times a day. I think he barks more than I do!! 🙂
Jodi Stone says
You are very wise. Children have a certain way of getting what they want, similar to puppies. 🙂
What is the long version of mother?

You’re so right about communication. And so many people just try to shut communication down–they don’t want scratching or barking and try to get their dogs to stop it.
BTW, did you take the interactive dog barking quiz at Nova? It’s amazing how even a bark from a dog you don’t know is recognizable to you. Here’s a link: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/meaning-dog-barks.html

Great post and you are so right we don’t always take the time to listen to what they are telling us but when we do they speak volumes 😉
