If you’ve been following this blog you know Sampson and Delilah are spoiled.
When I fell in love with Sampson I was determined to do everything in my power to ensure he is with me for a long time to come.
Originally I had him on California Natural for kibble, but once Delilah came to live with us and it was determined that raw food was best for her, that’s what we switched to.
Initially they went on raw to help them lose weight, since we were reducing their food intake and eliminating a bunch of carbohydrates I was concerned they might be hungry. I supplemented their raw food with some green beans.
Our mentor in the raw food program suggested frozen green beans and advised me to put them through the food processor since dogs don’t digest veggies. WHAT? Yes, that is what she said, so every morning I am chopping up green beans. For a filler.
I also like to give them a little bit of yogurt every day and sometimes a little bit of pumpkin. I found out quite by accident a couple of weeks back that pumpkin is extremely filling.
Since that time I’ve been stretching my pumpkin and yogurt by making Yumkin. My word. I made it up. Stick around and you’ll find I make up lots of words. Ever heard of Fabu, yeah, that one’s mine too, made it up on vacation in North Carolina in 2004.
Sorry, I digress…. here’s what you need for Yumkin.
1 32 oz container of yogurt ( I use plain because the dogs are on diets, if you want to use this for yourself you will probably want vanilla or at the very least a bit of honey added to it.)
1 28 oz can of pumpkin
1 empty yogurt container
Open the yogurt and place approximately half of the yogurt into the empty container. Now take the pumpkin and put half of the can into each yogurt container and mix it up.
That’s it. It’s so easy and the puppies love it.
The pumpkin makes it filling and the yogurt has good bacteria which is excellent for their digestion.
The pumpkin also helps make the yogurt a little bit thicker if you want to use it to top off the end of a Kong. 🙂

Sounds yummy! Your dawgs are lucky!
We gave both pups yogurt when their first year to help digestion. Right now we are having a problem keeping weight on Thunder (since his surgery). His appetite is great, but he must not be digesting it as he was before surgery. We are trying a digestive aid before dealing with switching food. Also, he will be less active in the winter so maybe his weight will come up a bit.
Jodi Stone says
What kind of digestive aid are you using? What is it supposed to do?
Have you considered changing his diet? Maybe he needs a food formulated for puppies?
Keep me posted on his progress. 🙂
2browndawgs says
We have to be careful changing foods. It is an AKC product but is vet recommended for dogs who have a history of bloat. It is an enzyme that is supposed to help food absorption, (sometimes that is an issue after bloat and we would rather use a this than put him on medication). If it works, I will post on it. Of course it could just be that he needs a bit more fat in his diet since hunting season burns a lot of calories. He doesn’t have pounds to spare, so when he loses a two or three pounds, it is noticeable.

This sounds delicious. I wonder if you could freeze it?
Jodi Stone says
Oh definitely, I use it in their Kongs and I freeze those.

I agree, that this sounds delicious. I am going to make it for Lila and me! Thanks for sharing Yumkin with us:)

It’s a bit bland for me, but if added some honey or agave or used the vanilla it would be just fine.

Isn’t it funny how we transfer our tastes to other. I don’t make food I don’t like, even for my kids (the exception being fried eggs, which are easy and I would eat if they didn’t make me sick– some sort of intolerance on my tummy’s part). I don’t like pumpkin, but maybe I should get over it. 🙂

You know you are right. Hubby had these bourbon meatballs somewhere and fell in love. He brought the recipe home, I made it once, hated the meatballs and never made them again! LOL

Yumpkin. I like it. But I am worried this recipe may be too difficult for me. 😉
I’ve never heard before that dogs don’t digest vegetables very well. That makes me curious. Shiva loves her veggies and regularly chows down on whatever we are willing to give her. Carrots, lettuce, green pepper, beans, she loves them all! I haven’t noticed any problems as a result.
Jodi Stone says
Maybe I didn’t explain it properly. They do digest it, but they don’t break it down. Ever notice the size of the veggies in the poop? Yup, that’s what I meant.
My dog’s poops have bits of carrots in them because we use those as treats. 😉
Married with Dawgs says
Lightly steaming vegetables usually breaks them down enough for them to be able to fully digest but no harm, no foul if they’re used for treats only. Just puree or steam if you want the veggies to be a part of their diet. Something to do with the cellulose of the cell walls or some gibberish like that.
Jodi Stone says
Thanks for the info, I will definitely try that! Of course I like my beans with lots of butter, but for their sake I won’t add that!
Let me know how your pack likes this!
Married with Dawgs says
What a great idea and how simple! We are definitely trying this one out at home. My pack thanks you in advance for all the yumminess 🙂

Wow–what a great idea. As uncreative as I am with dog foodstuffs, I am determined to try this–maybe we’ll finally get some firm poops out of Fozzie!
I keep hearing about the frozen beans but can’t imagine my pups would eat them. Not a bad idea for Sandy though, as she eats nonstop and will be even more of a piglet soon if I don’t intervene:)
Jodi Stone says
It’s very simple Kirsten and they really love it.
The pumpkin might help Sandy feel a bit fuller and as for the green beans, I usually put them in a container in the bottom drawer of the fridge so they aren’t always frozen when they eat them. If Sandy is feeling hungry or thinks she is, or maybe she is just a chow hound like Delilah, well the green beans are a great filler.

Mmmmm great recipe. I give the girls plain yogurt anyway so I will have to add some pumpkin to give them a special treat, thanx for sharing your Yumkin 🙂
Jodi Stone says
I bet they love it!

We love pumpkin at our house! We use it to help stretch meals further (Kol’s a bottomless pit, but packs on pounds fast. Low cal pumpkin is great!), to solve tummy troubles like loose stool or consttipation and even just for yumminess. Yumkin is a fantastic idea. With a dash of pumpkin pie spice, I bet I would even enjoy it! Thanks for sharing it with us for Tasty Tuesday! Puggles snuggles from your Tasty Tuesday host – Kolchak!
