Yesterday ended week two of K-9 Kamp, hosted by Koly and Kelly.ย Our challenge this week was to complete one hour of fetch.
You would think this would be an easy challenge because Sampson and Delilah are labs (or in Sampson’s case a lab mix;) but that wasn’t the case. ๐
We started out like gangbusters on Saturday.ย I enlisted Hubby’s help because he has a better arm than I do, so up to the field we went with one of Delilah’s bumpers.ย After about 10 minutes Delilah lost interest and it was only me fetching the bumper.
We tried again on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.ย If we got 10 minutes each day that was doing something.ย Although Wednesday Sampson got a wild burst of energy and took off with the bumper, enticing Delilah to run with him.
But the bumper quickly got dropped and they ended up wrestling. (Does that count?)
All told I will say, we probably got about 30 minutes of fetch in.ย Very poor showing in my book for two labs.
While I was formulating this blog in my mind this morning, I decided to check the K-9 Kamp to see what week three’s challenge might be.
I thought fetch was hard.
This week’s challenge is to play tug of war with your dog.ย For an hour.ย Oh but it doesn’t end there, oh no.ย You’re expected to do squats, lunges and push ups all while playing tug of war with your dog. That might work for Jodi with Kolchak the Puggle who weighs 25 pounds, but I’m not sure how it’s going to work for this Jodi with the 75 and 90 pound labs. ๐
To quote Kolchak T. Puggle “It’s not much of a war when your Mama is an out of shape weakling.”
Tune in next Thursday (if I’m still able to blog) to find out how we fare with this next challenge.

BOL! Yes, I might have an easier week with Koly BUT I do feel your pain! My usual K9 Kamp partner is my friend’s 75lb pit cross, Jerri. That girl knows how to tug!! It’s challenging FOR SURE. My suggestion? If you can find a way to kamp with one dog at a time, do it! This is designed as a single dog challenge, but if you can pull it off with two, you would practically be a super hero in my eyes. LOL. My other suggestion? You can always separate the two components and do 2 minutes of tug, put your pups in a “down” then do two minutes of lunges, then the sprint then start again! K9 Kamp is totally flexible, use the challenge as a jumping off point, then tell us what you did to make it work for you and your pups. The whole point is to get out and HAVE FUN! And remember! You don’t have to do all 60 minutes at once! Give yourself a break and split it up a bit! We’re glad your kamping with us!
(PS – wrestling is fabulous exercise and it totally counts!)

Thanks Jodi, I may have to complete the challenge in the way you suggested since either one of my dogs can tug me over when I am on two solid feet, or sitting down!
I can’t possible seeing pulling this off with two!

That’s very cute – the bumper was dropped so they start wrestling, cute photo!
Jodi Stone says
I think he just used the bumper to get her to start wrestling. ๐ He tricked her.
Kristine says
Okay, seriously. I am pretty sure my dog is going to break both of my arms in this next challenge. I am beyond afraid. The problem is, she won’t tug anywhere except inside the house so if we do it outside it will be a lame challenge but if we do it in, our house will most likely combust.
We should start a K9 Kamp support group.
Jodi Stone says
Kristine, K9 Kamp support group; I’m in!
I agree we normally only play tug in the house and while I can almost hold my own against Delilah; Sampson will definitely either pull me over, or pull my arms out of the sockets! LOL
Good luck with the Shivster.

I hope K-9 Camp isn’t the death of you! This challenge would be a tough one for us since we do not play tug of war with our dogs. Don’t need them to think tug-of-war with a duck is acceptable. ๐
The pictures you took of this challenge are fabulous.
Jodi Stone says
Well it’s either going to be K-9 Kamp or Delilah, one of them will do me in.
Yes, in your case I can see why you wouldn’t play tug with the 2 Brown Dawgs, but do they ever try and play tug together?
2browndawgs says
They used to, but we had to end that because they got way too wild. They love to play together and chase, but Thunder is just so much heavier than Storm. One time he knocked her over while playing and then it was pain killers for Storm for a few days. Thank goodness she didn’t need x-rays. They have to settle for waiting for their turn to fetch and occasional chasing.

I love the pictures of D and S!
I am very afraid for week 3. Sophie is the tugging queen. When she feels her grip slipping, she digs in with all 68 lbs of her. She may also flail around and 68lbs of flailing lab = bruised me!
Jodi Stone says
Patty, I hear your pain. Mine don’t usually flail around but they sure can dig in. Then if one of them sees you tugging they come over and join in and you may just as well give up. I am going to have to do this in the house and separate them.
Good Luck with Sophie!
Pup Fan says
Oh, good point! For me, tug of war isn’t too bad since Bella’s less than 30 lbs. But for you…. eek!
Jodi Stone says
That would be a bit easier, mind I don’t want to throw them around like ragdolls, but I would like to remain on two feet!

I just went 20 minutes with the laser pointer with the puppy and I’m worn out! ๐ !! What a challenge, I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines, but I really think you’ll do great!!
Kim~Life at Golden Pines says
By the way, THANK YOU for the kind words on the loss of our girl Reggie–You’ve no idea how much they helped!!
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Kim, we know you are with us in spirit.
Words don’t every seem to be enough, but I’m glad they brought you some comfort. ๐
