Follow-Up Friday….
One Step Forward, Two Steps Back – Author’s Note
Delilah’s path of destruction has continued this week. She ate a can of Crisco (not the can itself but the shortening inside,) a bag of barbecue pretzels and today she destroyed a can of Salmon Oil.
Yes, I have two lovely spots of oil on the carpets, and the dogs lick them.
She has run off on three separate walks compelling me to pull out the 30 foot leash and keep her on it until we have passed the dangerous spot. The leash severely limits where we can walk, because it has a tendency to get snagged on bushes and trees.
To top it all off, she absolutely REFUSES to sit and remain calm when the food is out for clicker training, she won’t stay down for more than 30 seconds; she either moves to a sitting position or moves her position totally.
She is frustrating me beyond belief and I don’t know what to do. 🙁

Crisco and Salmon Oil… WOW… did it make her sick??? Has it come… OUT yet???
So sorry to hear this. Hope it gets MUCH better… quickly.
Jodi Stone says
LOL, so far so good Frankie! You wouldn’t ever do that would you?
Misty Shores Chesapeakes says
So sorry to hear that. How old is she? Sometimes younger dogs do go through a destructive phase.
I remember reading a recent post where you said she came into heat, has she been spayed? My friend had a female Chessie, (actually the great grandmother of my girls) well she chewed a huge hole in the back of her drivers side seat when she was in season. Maybe its a hormonal thing.
Hope things are better this coming week!
Jodi Stone says
Misty, she has been spayed, and she will be (our best guess) six this year. I thought I had gotten everything up that she could possibly get and then BOOM, she nails me again.
A driver’s seat? OMG I don’t know what I would do!!

I’ll be thinking about you and Delilah, I hope you can get it figured out. 2browndawgs brings up a good idea maybe diet.
Wish we could get in their heads to see what they are thinking, frustrating!
2browndawgs says
Oh no sounds frustrating. Are all the problems related to food? Is she running off to eat things? Maybe her diet isn’t working right for her? Or there is a physical issue? I don’t know either, just thinking.
Jodi Stone says
Yes and yes! I guess I will have to call the vet or talk to the raw food lady. I don’t think there is a physical issue, but who knows. She had her yearly check in June and everything seemed fine. Thanks for your thoughts, they are always important here. 🙂

I have to tell you that reading about your girl, I’m reminded of Rudi. That free spirit that gets into everything and anything makes life interesting and frustrating. I hope you are able to find a solution to it all–But until you do, and even afterwards, know that we’re here to support you and cheer you on!!!
Jodi Stone says
Kim, when I read your tribute to Rudi, I was reminded so much of Delilah. 🙂 In fact, today I ALMOST got a picture of her cleaning up a pan on the stove. So much like your Rudi eating the cat’s food. I have tried and tried to catch her up on two legs, but so far that picture has been elusive.
As frustrating as she can be at times, she really does bring me much joy. I will never give up on her!
Thank you for your support, I do appreciate it.

I thought about you and Delilah after I posted my comment yesterday. I was remembering the times that I was at wits-end with Rudi and I didn’t know where to turn or what to do. I really wish I could give you some good advice to ease some of the feelings you are having. I have no doubt that you see those same good qualities in Delilah that I saw in Rudi. And they key will be to remember those qualities when she’s gotten into something again that you know darn well she knows she shouldn’t have! 🙂 !!

Looks like a job for “Super Cesar”. Check his website, there may be a tip or two in there that will help. http://www.cesarsway.com/. Good luck.
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Big Al, I will check him out, I do watch his shows on occasion.

Awwwwwwww that stinks. We had Shepards growing up, Huge. I loved them dearly but they were out of control, Used to jump through windows to get at dogs in heat, eat out of pans [Hamburger Helper] simmering on the stove!, etc. I have no words of wisdom since all my mother could do was scream and yell, wack them with newspapers, lock them in the bathroom, none of that worked. We didn’t dare tell my father [even though they were His dogs] since he probably would have beaten them to death…
Anyway on a lighter note, look how cute Sampson is, obeying while Delilah is Not! lol
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Kathy, I know she could be worse! Isn’t it amazing how different attitudes about dogs were when we were kids? I for one am glad we have evolved.
