Last month my friend Mindy and I went to a NASCAR race. The racetrack is located in a very rural setting, so we found a shuttle to take us to and from the track.
On the way back from the race as the bus bumped and banged down the winding country road, and the obnoxious drunk guy farted in the seat behind me, we passed some horses in a corral. The horses had fly masks on; at the time I didn’t know what they were and from my seat on the bus I stared with horror at these horses and wondered why someone would be trying to keep the horses from seeing!
I googled it as soon as I got home and found out why the horses eyes were covered. I didn’t think about the fly masks again….until today.
I noticed today on our walk the gnats that I protect myself from by my screen hat, are congregating on the dogs…around their eyes. They rimmed the lower lid of Delilah’s eyes in such a way it looked like she had fancy eye lashes.
From what I could tell, I don’t think they were biting her, but it really grossed me out and I wiped them away as frequently as she would allow.
But it made me think about those fly masks again.
I wonder how the dogs would look with the screen hat on?

hmmm, you might be onto something, new fashion statement that serves a purpose 😉

I’m thinking the same thing. 😉 Remember where you heard about it. 😉

Hummmmm I’m not thinkin I would like it much, butt I know the FLIES and Gnats would hate … not being able to get to the DRINK that they like to get from our eyes!!! FUR REAL.. that is what they are doing… gettin MOISTURE from Eyes …. and Noses. I prefer MY water from a Bowl or Water puddle or creek or lake… Just sayin.
Jodi Stone says
Is that what they are doing? It’s nasty!!

Hate gnats and they seem to really like brown dogs. I wonder how that mask would work and more importantly, would the dogs wear them?
Jodi Stone says
I’m on it. 🙂 Do you have a lot of them where the 2BrownDawgs work?
2browndawgs says
Up at our cabin they are really bad May and part of June and then they subside. But when they are bad, they are really horrible. Can’t even walk in the woods.

God that is Disgusting! Never heard of this before! Must watch Molly’s sweet baby eyes!! Too Gross!!!!!!! Hope you find a good solution Jodi.
Jodi Stone says
Thanks Kathy, I’m not sure what I will do, maybe googles? Hope Molly doesn’t get attacked like that!
Kristine says
Yikes! Those look positively horrifying. Fly hats may not be a bad idea if this is a real problem where you live. It makes me very grateful to live in a colder climate – too cold for such icky bugs. Poor puppies.
Jodi Stone says
Well there’s a pro for moving to a colder climate! LOL thanks Kristine!!
Glad Shiva doesn’t have to deal with this!
Kirsten says
Icky! Poor thing. I wonder if some sort of stinky fragrance applied around the head–not too close to the eyes–would help? Like Tea tree oil or lemongrass or eucalyptus? Dog would probably hate it, but maybe the bugs would too?
Jodi Stone says
Kirsten, I have some tea tree oil, do you think you can put it directly on them?
