Before I get into the meat of my blog, I have to thank Lexy from Gone for a Walk for awarding me the (drum roll please) Versatile Blogger Award. There are requirements that come with accepting this award; so I will be blogging about this award soon. I promise.
So about collars, there are at least two people I have met on the trail, that don’t have collars on their dogs. This is perplexing to me for a couple of reasons.
Since your dog is required to be licensed, the collar holds the town license which provides information about you and your dog, should you ever become separated. The collar also holds the rabies tag indicating to anyone who might find or encounter your dog, that the dog has been vaccinated for rabies. The rabies tag also has your veterinarian‘s name and phone number AND your veterinarian has your name and phone number.
The other reason I can think of is, what if you have to grab a hold of your dog or separate your dog from an aggressive dog. In my opinion, you should also ALWAYS have your leash on you. It makes sense and it makes you a responsible dog owner.

I love Sampson’s face. 🙂

Me too! He was so good on this vacation too, he never wandered off that porch without us.

I agree with you about the collars! though I’m also soooo jealous of the people in my neighbourhood who have their dogs so well trained that putting them on leash would be silly, even out near the street. Gwynn likes to explore the neighbours backyards if i try letting him off in the unfenced front yard 😛

Lexy,
Sampson is good, he will stay in the yard with his dad; it amazes me. I will step outside and say, “where is punkin?” and he will just be lying in the driveway enjoying life.
Delilah on the other hand needs to be tied out, which makes me sad. 🙁
Gwynn sounds like Delilah; an adventurer!

That is so dangerous to be outside without some sort of id on your dog. Even the dog with the best recall in the world can get away. Most of the dogs in city pounds are found without collars and the chances of finding the dog’s owner are so slim. I am shocked that so many people are willing to take that risk.
My dog pretty much always has her collar on. Even off-leash. Even inside the house. You just never know what could happen.

Agreed Kristine. Sampson and Delilah always have a collar on. They have a walking collar and a “show” collar that is very small and only holds 1 tag with their name, my name and my phone number on it. You can NEVER be too careful with your baby!!

I like the idea of the walking and indoor collars… Gwynn’s just got the one collar, with all of his tags on it, and it’s on all the time. however, it does have the advantage for us of jingling when he is trying to sneak up behind you.
Jodi Stone says
Sampson and Delilah sleep in our room, so the jingling drives us nuts! The little collar is just enough to grab if you need to and we have silencers on the tag to keep the noise level down. Actually, Delilah’s silencer broke, which works for us, because we can hear her!
