Do I have dirt in my ear?
So like you know how dogs like to kick stuff over their ‘business’ once they’ve done it?
I thought it was only after they had pooped, but sometimes my dogs do it after they pee.
Sampson will pee and then kick his legs, Delilah however is one of those dogs that walk away, sometimes like 15 feet away before she kicks. Yes, she is one of those dogs.
Considering all the conflicts we’ve had on our evening walks, I decided to change things up and whenever possible go home on my lunch and walk the dogs. I started this Tuesday afternoon. I took the dogs up to the field. Delilah decided to do her pooping business and walk away. As I bent over to pick it up she kicked. Now she’s done this to me before, but usually it just lands on my pants or in my shoes. Sometimes Sampson is in the way and has to make a quick maneuver to avoid it.
Well this time, dirt and grass went flying and something landed in my ear. It was dirt.
You know how you’re NOT supposed to stick your finger in your ear? And you know that your ear while not wet, it’s kind of got that waxy thing going on? Right.
Well now I have dirt in my ear and I’m afraid to put my finger there because I’m afraid I’ll push it in further, but what if there’s a bug in it? I know, right.
Ever so carefully I worked at it and I did get it out, but then I kept having that feeling that something was in my ear. 🙁
Dog Collars
I’m super excited. We won a reflective collar from a giveaway on Emma’s blog. Did I mention it’s a collar that has the dog’s information right on the collar, no tag needed? One would think this would be an easy choice, no? Well picking out the color and the font is not the issue, here’s what I want your thoughts on.
Whose name should I put on the collar? Delilah’s or mine. You’d think that would be an easy decision? I thought so too, until I recently read a discussion on a lab rescue page. Considering all the dog stealing that has been going on recently, do you think it’s wise to put Delilah’s name on the collar? I mean, I’m pretty sure anyone that picked up Delilah would be more than willing to return her, once they had her in their home for an hour or so, but is it in her best interest to have her name emblazoned for all to see? I’m afraid some nefarious person could perhaps coax her away? I’m torn and that is holding me up from ordering the collar.
Last by not least a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my mom. Love you!!

Oh no! Sorry about the dirt in your ear! That doesn’t sound fun!! Congratulations on winning the collar! I’d put the dog’s name on it. I try not to worry too much about my dogs getting stolen, I highly doubt they’d go with a stranger, either. I also have them microchipped to me.

I would put Donna’s name because I’ve never really heard of people dognapping locally. Besides the fact that Donna is already neutered and not a pedigree anyway. But if I were in another country then yes, I would be more wary. Congratulations on getting a personalised collar ^___^

Firstly Happy Birthday to your mum. Secondly isn’t the dirt kicking a form of scent marking? Although never having gotten dirt in my ear (I would have so put my finger in my ear to get it out) my sister once got a wet leaf kicked at her and it stuck on her head – I was the supportive sister and pointed and laughed! Um could you not have a shower to wash it out. I am assuming you have washed it out by now, and you’re not walking around treasuring the dirt (I would say and the bug that lives in it, but I am not that mean!!)
Finally, Mity has our surname and mobile number on his collar. He does not have his name on it for the exact reason of not wanting someone to know his name and it doesn’t have one of our full names on it either for the same reason. It’s all personal information and I am unwilling to share stuff like that. Plus surely the most important information is the phone number so you can be contacted? After that I think I know of someone who put allergy information on it so that if found no one would feed their dog something it was allergic to. If you’re undecided I would think about what information is important if your dog is found without you and so long as that’s on there what does the rest matter?

My research on the dirt kicking subject, which ironically I wrote about as part of my post today, turned up that it is mostly likely a territory marking thing, though some do also think that they are trying to cover up their business. Since Delilah walks further away, it seems to make more sense to me that it would be territory marking.

Hi Y’all!
My Humans once lived in an area where there was an active dog thief steeling dogs for laboratory use. I do believe now days that my microchip would be scanned and I would be returned. I know dogs who have both a chip and tattoo. I also wear a tag that can be scanned by a smart phone and bring up my info so they can contact my Humans.
Perhaps the most important thing is never allow your pawed friend outdoors on his own, not even in a fenced yard. If you can’t be with him, keep him in your house. Sampson and Delilah don’t seem to have a problem as you seem to always be with them or they with you.
If you are in doubt, put your cell phone number on the collar. That way you can use it on whichever dog you want and if the worst should happen and the dog get off on his own, just be sure your phone is turned on. The one benefit to the cell phone number, as everyone knows, it will (hopefully) be where you are, even if you’re still actively searching for you missin’ friend.
Just one fellow’s view. Tells us what you decide.
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog

Dirt in your ear?? GAH! I always try to asses the intensity and angle of the digging before I bend down to pick up the poop and can arrange myself safely to stay clean. But sometimes, Cupcake spins around like a lawn sprinkler. While she’s digging. Yeah. Dirt-sprinkler.

Thanks for the mention, hope you can get your collar soon 😉 We have our name and number, but if you are worried about it, then I would just put the number. Our ID tags on our other collars have our names on them, we just hope that the odds are that we will never run away or get lost and if we do, what are the odds that someone would not return us? As for that kicking up dirt thing, none of us do that. We pee and poop like ladies, none of that silly stuff. Cousin Lena does that and it drives Mom mad as she has been hit with flying debris but so far nothing in her ear.

Happy Birthday to your mom 🙂 Rudy is the only kicker we have these days. And he does is “properly.” Tucker and Lucy were both kickers and Lucy did it Delilah’s way. LOL Our dogs are chipped and wear ID tags that contain their names, our names, our phone number and our vet’s phone number. Probably overkill, but feel better safe than sorry.

Yikes! Peeps say thank her lucky stars I am not a kicker as with her luck it would be more than dirt in her ear LOL. Have a tremendous Thursday.
Best wishes Molly

Good aim Delilah…I would go ahead and put her name on the collar. If somebody wants to steal her, having the name there isn’t really going to make a difference, they will steal her.

First, Happy Birthday to your mom!!!
The dirt thing is hilarious! I would have been the same way! I definitely would have dug it out of there (ever so carefully) and hey! You never know, there very well could have been a bug!!!!
2 of my huskies like to bury their business. I laugh at them every time because they look hilarious!!

Kind of funny that I talked about the dirt kicking thing in my post today too, though so far I’ve managed to dodge any flying debris!
You make me worry about things I didn’t worry about before….like sticking my finger in my ear, and putting my dogs’ name on their collar (which I’ve always done). I don’t worry too much about it where I live. Besides, if someone wants to lure a dog away, they’re probably going to have a steak or something, and it wouldn’t matter if they knew their name or not, right?

I have only one dog who does the kick dirt thing. We can’t figure out if she is trying to hide her smell from predators or spread it around to frighten everyone.
I have always heard not to give anyone information about your dog, like her name on the collar. I always use mine for tags.

The dirt would have been a fashion statement when you got back to work…lol. Our dogs wear their collars when they out and about in case they are lost. We have their names and a phone number on their collars. Happy birthday to your Mom. 🙂

I hate when Rita kicks dirt back at me while I’m scooping. Rude! But at least I’ve not had it in my ear.
As for the name on the collar – if someone wanted to lure her away, wouldn’t a treat have more sway than whatever they called her? (“Here Sweetie, here’s a piece of chicken!”) If someone really wants to steal your pup, I think not knowing the name would not be a deterrent so probably doesn’t matter. On the other hand, if she’s lost, it might help someone coax her over so they can catch her. Or, as suggested above, just put the phone # maybe.
Happy birthday Mom!

How annoying with the dirt 🙂 Would a Q-tip work?
I think you should out Delilah’s name on the collar. After all, if they are close enough to read the collar, they are already close enough to coax her. Besides, if she’s anything like Maya, it won’t take much to coax her away. She loves anybody and everybody.
